Bond shite = gone to a new home

Ah crap. The rear brakes do more than just bind. After two miles, they'd pretty much seized solid. One adjuster snapped off, the other already fully out. Something's quite wrong. So, Bond still in Wolverhampton, me back home seeking a tow car and trailer...

All part of the fun & games of picking up an old car!Have you got access to said tow car/trailor, or are you hoping for some assistance from fellow Autoshiters? (would love to help but don't have either of required essentials).

As the rear shoes will be scrap anyway, can you pour lots of oil into the drum to get it moving? I've never tried this, but I've come close to doing it a few times when I ran out of swear words  If the adjuster has snapped off, you're going to have quite a job getting the drum off.Welcome to the world of dodgy plastic cars based on old Triumph mechanicals - at least yours is based on a car that's only 40 years out of date, not 50 like mine :D

Aye, attempting to rebuild the rear brakes at the side of the road in the pouring rain was certainly, um, interesting. At the moment, I'm not sure what I'm going to do. If anyone has towcar/trailer, it might be appreciated...

Oh noes!Still, I am sure a man of your resources can find some shifting skills dead easy.(Funnily enough I used to use this fella with an old truck, loved his 2CV's he did. Quite hirsute....)

Gareth - we had the rear drums apart at the roadside. No probs getting them all apart! However, a bit of a cock-up getting it all together saw us lose a bit of brake fluid, so the pedal went dead on us. By this stage, we'd had enough as the adjusters seemed full backed off but things were still tight. Gah!Pog - if some daft hairy bloke hadn't sold his lovely old LDV beavertail, I'd be laughing... (I miss that ol' truck sometimes!)

If you can get the rear drums off, take the shoes out and clamp the hoses, then bleed the fronts. Proceed c a r e f u l l y home :D

Poo!Well, all the parts are cheap enough at least. Maybe the handbrake lever was in the wrong place or something Not quite sure how you'd be able to get it apart if the brakes were seizing on though :? Were the little wedges in the adjusters seized in position maybe so even unwinding the screw meant they didn't move in?

You could try filing some metal off of the brake shoe where it sits against the adjuster/cylinder, and then re-fit the drum to see if it'll turn.

It's certainly odd Seth. I was expecting the drum to resolutely refuse to come off but despite not turning, both sides were fine. One adjuster had snapped off but the other had the wedges fully in. I'm wondering if someone has just tried fitting the wrong parts or something.I think I've got transport sorted now, so I'll get it home and take it from there. Would have helpe yesterday if I hadn't left the workshop manual I purchased on Sunday at home...

Do the hubs turn ok with the drum off? Could be ovetightened bearings seizing up if so? Just a wild stab in the dark though, as everytime i've tried to get seized brake drums off it's been a load of grief!

Come on, we need details! HOW do you extract cars from the crappage scheme, cos every time I have heard of anybody contacting a scrappy about it they were met with a resounding NO. What are the details? What are the rules. I could have had a 1968 SWB if I had known what to say....

Right, car and trailer sorted. Hoping to collect on Saturday.Fred - the rules are that a car must be scrapped within a week of the new car being delivered. Because we intervened BEFORE the new car was delivered, Kia were able to remove it from the scheme. Good job there's a long wait for a new Kia...However, I've seen one case (that Riley) where an intervention seemed to take place right at the last possible moment. The car had actually been carted off to the scrappers, but BMW agreed to release the car from scrappage before the crusher could do its work.

So it's down to the dealer who submitted it then?

Posted

Effectively, yes. Problem is, most new car salesman see anything older than ten years as "just an old clunker" so they're hardly going to the trouble of trying to flog scrappage victims when they can do nothing and get a payout from the manufacturer and the government. All credit to one Kia dealer though who saved a Singer Vogue. Again, I think this was mentioned in a press release but when the dealer principle found out, he saved the car even though it cost them (sold it for £1650, so they didn't get £2000).

Hoorah! The Bond has landed! Got her back home with no real traumas apart from jockey-wheel shenanigans with the car trailer and the fact that the Bond was only just wide enough for the ramps - and almost wouldn't come back off again after the swing axles robbed me of a few more mm! For non-Triumph folk, when you reverse, the rear wheels do this \--/ so positive camber definitely is for the lose!Citroen coped well and towed it very nicely - though on one stretch, the fuel consumption did drop to 8mpg. In a diesel!

Posted

Well, ok. It was a live mpg display and it was while doing 4000rpm in second...I'd really like to do the Bond up on the cheap, as that's how it seems to have lived most of its life. For instance, the two interior door handles are different. So, hopefully I can find some scrap Heralds and Vitesses to rob for bits. Both doors are rotten and both have door latch issues, so maybe I can find a non-matching pair of doors for a start...A show queen this definitely will not be!

Was that you on Radio 4 earlier? If so I'm proud to know you!

Aye, thought I disguised the Brummy accent fairly successfully...That was recorded last week. Nerve wracking or what!I have successfully bought absolutely nothing today, so perhaps I'll spend some money on the Bond instead. Guess I'll have to take the 2CV to Retro-Rides next weekend...

Well Pog, we have just outed Torsten as a Radio 4 listener...

It was all about scrappage with some of the classics we've reported on featured too (you get to listen to a Singer Gazelle and a Riley RM!).

It's here http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00lxvl5 if you want a listen, about 20 mins in.

great stuff wobbler, I just turned the radio on yesterday and heard your dulcet tones too.

I said to Ms_Bol 'Hey I know this guy, i have even bought a car off him!' She thought that meant I had just bought yet another car without her knowledge so started to give me a mild roasting :x
