Dave does a stupid thing and buys another bleeding golf.

Be interested in this when the time comes (jan 2 would be good!)

I'm not sure what I'll do with it when it's done.

I could do with getting some money out of it, but it's one of those that'll be an amazingly useful thing to have around too when it's done.

Of course, my Mondeo will do everything this does and better I think.  So it will really be something I don't need anymore.

Good work saving this! I'm not a massive VAG fan, so naturally I own 2 at present.

Agreed I’m thinking full length roof-rack for 8x4 sheets, towbar is there and a veg tank and away. If it doesn’t owe you much more than £4-450 I’m in.

So time for an update. Me and Drew D attacked this earlier, stripped away most of what's needed to do the timing belt and water pump and I've managed to fit the repair bracket, unfortunately we're time limited today and as such we've had to down tools but...

Looks like it'll be fairly easy to remove the broken stud from the engine block via the wheel arch, without removing the engine

Looks like the bottom engine mount boss has a damaged thread so I might need to repair that, but again, access via wheel arch is easy enough to do this.

Hopefully I can crack on with this tomorrow and get some stuff actually done on it, which will be excellent.

Events have conspired against me this week regards vehicles. Do you have a completed price in mind?

Posted

I want to get it back together and make sure it's actually working as a car before I put a price on it.

If needs cleaning out inside as it's got damp and mouldy.

The wing has rotted through so either wants a bit welding to it, bodgineering and painting with wag or a proper coloured wing sourcing to replace it.. or just leave it be, perhaps tape it before the next MOT.

I noticed that it's has the expensive black plastic coated stainless braided brake line fitted at some point. That would suggest the previous owner didn't just whack to together on a budget.

*sigh*

Did 13 hours on this yesterday and failed to take a single photograph.

Basically, if it could be a dick, it was a dick, damn thing has fought me at every step.

So..  What I've learned.

Drilling cast iron to install new helicoils is a job best done with the engine out of the car, so natch I did it with the engine in place, and it fought me again.  I now have a small hole in my finger as a result, but I also have all three bolts holding the engine to the alloy mount in place.

The cam belt and water pump have been replaced along with all the tensioners and the stretch bolts where appropriate, engine turned over three times by hand (I locked everything down anyway with the correct VW tools) and it seems fine, all the marks still line up as they should.

Under the car is remarkably solid.

Left to do, re-assemble all the bits I took off to make it easier to get to things.

Purchase new bolts for, and re-install the harmonic balancer.

Clean everything up properly.

Re-install the battery and see if it's going to be a sod and end up going over the bridge anyway, even after all my hard work.

Good score on the Multipla though!

I'll probably do just that.  Or swap it for something totally unsuitable and a bit shite.

I'd pop my name forward too if you decide to get rid I might be needing a new daily soon

Posted

As Dave mentioned I spent a few hours last week twirling spanners on this, and it is IMHO alright. Once it's cleaned up inside it'll be a nice enough daily or parts hauler.

With the new cam belt it should be good for a while. The wing is easy to replace, and for it's age it's in pretty nice condition.

Really appreciated your help with this getting it apart ready for me to attack.

This may not be 'typical Autoshite fodder', but I think they'll soon disappear.

Well done for cracking on with it.

This is way too nice to be bridged especially with the work you've put into it!

Mk4's are very much on the 'At risk' register now with thousands of them disappearing every year, it's a shame as the one's that came after them were no-where near as tough.

KTF, there's a good car under there and with fresh belt and servicing it should have many years left in it.

I'd planned to finish this tomorrow evening, but Mrs Dorson tells me that I'm busy, and I still ache like hell.  I've got a workshop but it's full of aircooled stuff with holes in, so I was working outside to do the work on this, as a result I'm still suffering cramps and muscle aches.

My own fault, no breaks, no base layers, and not drinking enough while I got on with things.

Fingers crossed, a short spell on this Saturday will see it running and ready to clean up and move on.

Saturday didn't happen but I had a few hours free on Sunday so had a bit of time on the car

Aux belt reinstalled with harmonic balancer in plate with four bolts, arch liner back in place and turbo pipes mostly back in, air box back in, battery on, turned the key. Nothing.

Checked the battery, it's shagged. Sod it, downed tools and went home. I need to buy a battery as it's been sat on a charger for a bit already.

Oh this runs now. Needs the pump retarding a bit and setting up on vagcom. Unfortunately the battery I used for it is for another one of my cars, as such I need to find a decent battery from somewhere for it and fit some hoses and add coolant. Drew D has a video somewhere. Thanks again for your help this weekend.. much achieved

I haven't read the full thread but I may well have the cover you're after on my spare engine if you still need it. I'll have a look in the morrow.

If you'd not mind, that'd be great, thanks.

No problem, it was a good weekend. I'll upload the video later today if I get the chance.

I can't speak for Dave but I was surprised how good it sounded, bearing in mind it was really cold yesterday. It started within a couple of seconds of turning the key, and had only been running for about 5 seconds before I began filming it.

To be fair it's no worse than my mondeo from cold.

Interesting:)

Right engine, but sounds like a trial to get it running again.

The rank taxi (MK1 90bhp ALH Octavia) I had was great fun on veg with my own personal remap.

Boost for days and 60mpg

Mine is the 110 version of the alh engine and it moves along nice but a cheeky remap maybe the way forward as mechanically it's spot on.

Did you do it all through vagcom or so you need a Ross tech style cable?

There was a thread on here before about it so perhaps I'll try a search first!!!
