Peugeot 406 - C U L8R 406

Yeah I wouldn't recommend driving it like the Laguna, 4th will happily go all the way beyond 60, which I used to regularly do when accelerating. It seems a bit more XUD like in engine speed/gear selection than I anticipated, more or less identical to the XUD11 to be honest.

Glad you're still getting on with it! Should have plenty of life in it really.

Had a 3 year old 406 petrol saloon 1.8 many years ago. Super comfy, everything worked, had it quite a few years only had to have the clutch replaced- cost about £250 to have done. Would have an estate in the blink of an eye.

One of the best cars Peugeot ever made.

Think the reg was T550 OLL

Ive never owned a 406, but drove plenty of them when I worked for a local taxi firm. They tended to buy them about 100k and then run them to death. Highest mileage one I drove was a w plate hdi90 on nearly 500k on original engine and gearbox and it was still comfy and did 700 miles to a tank of fuel. I did over 2000 miles in a week in it once.

Not a popular view with the 405 lickers, but the 406 was/is a great car. Look at the shit it was competing with!

I do love mine even though mine decided to lock unlock the doors whilst driving along this morning. Thats a new one!

The rear wiper wont wipe the top 1/3 of the back windscreen either, even after replacing the arm.

I am on my third set of washer jets as they seem to just block up - already lost two of the them even though been in for 3 weeks only.

Oh and the two stroke oil I lobbed in to counteract the petrol in the tank meant I got a full xud load of clag this morning when starting up.

The beam pattern on the headlights is rather interesting... But I've just been out to get some filter tips and found myself exceeding the speed limit as speed bumps just vanish! Not had that since the xm!

Posted

Ignition on, Brrrrrrrweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee... Experience of late 90's PSA shite has taught me that the climate control sensor fan is filthy (XM and Xantia both had this done), so when I got home from work...

This can only be a good sign...

Yup

post-5612-0-75437100-1541009010_thumb.jpg

The motor unit wont pull right off without de-soldering the sensor, but it came down enough to remove the fan and cotton bud the housing which was full of fluff

I cleaned the contacts, lenses and bulbs of the interior lights

Washed the fan

post-5612-0-19498000-1541009193_thumb.jpg

and once re-assembled and re fitted we have a silent fan and MUCH brighter lighting, it's amazing how much of a film of shit bulbs get in their life

post-5612-0-80968700-1541009216_thumb.jpg

I only lost one clip which vanished down by the handbrake, the small vanity light is now wedged in with a bit of card which works quite well.

I broke it's vacuum cleaner cherry

If anything the boot is too big, Henry rolled around during cornering...

it just about squeezes onto mums driveway leaving enough space for my stepdad to get on as well if he comes home early from work

post-5612-0-99407800-1541009401_thumb.jpg

Hoping to steal a few hours on Sunday to look at the handbrake, and adjust the drums and have the centre console out to check the lever and retrieve my lost clip, the lever sounds like it's binding on something, it's not the smooth floppy motion I would expect from a handbrake needing adjustment. My £6 stalk radio adapter arrived today, hopefully the DIN adapter kit will come tomorrow then I can also fit the pioneer and have my SD card and handfree back!

170 miles of free diesel left too! 45mpg at the moment, it does flitter up to 47 but goes down again so no idea what it'll settle at but TBH I can live with 45. For all I know the Laguna was lying about it's 51/52mpg and was doing 40 all along. Will see what it does when I brim it up probably at the weekend and reset it all, plus I'm still having fun here and there with the train like boost it has, there was something wrong with the Laguna as this pull so much better and it's a heavier car! It also doesnt throw itself into limp mode if I do said GLF from cold too, which is nice. By GLF from cold I mean 2.4/3k in 3rd whilst accelerating up to 50 from a sharp corner 3 miles from home!

Easy little wins since I can't do anything too big in the week, not now it's dark 2 hours before I leave work!

So, stuff what I have done...

In the week, my service stuff arrived. Don't need half of it, so I ferreted that away until the spring, where I can give it a nice £0 oil change, by which time it'll have done 10kish since the last one.

However, I did change the rear wiper as it was very smeary and it bugged me, as you need it quite alot on the flat back, that's taking some getting used to...

post-5612-0-10437900-1541375227_thumb.jpg

And just like Moog's the top bit of the screen doesn't get cleared. Meh

post-5612-0-54272500-1541375259_thumb.jpg

I then had a gander at the cabin filter which is amazingly easy to get at

Much better!

Fast forward to yesterday, when I took a gander at the battery

post-5612-0-40200900-1541375382_thumb.jpg

Need to get a clamp for that, or any suggestions for an MOT pass solution?

post-5612-0-67473700-1541375425_thumb.jpg

Apparently it's the wrong size and too big, which is why the cover doesnt fit

post-5612-0-14957100-1541375458_thumb.jpg

And to remove this bottom bit here to drop it down a bit

post-5612-0-16651100-1541375483_thumb.jpg

Whilst the battery tray was out, I re-seated the headlight bulb because I find the beam pattern almost terrifying, and found some rubbish

My assistant got bloody coppalip on her fleece... Need to get the vanish on that before Amy sees

post-5612-0-34290300-1541375573_thumb.jpg

And, did it work?

post-5612-0-61090100-1541375586_thumb.jpg

no... Ah well, not buying a new bloody battery when this one is a year old, so I'll frisbee the cover and lash the battery down quite soon

post-5612-0-71931600-1541375648_thumb.jpg

Had a peek at the air filter and that's fine, not changing that. Oddly, after wiping some oily shit off the MAF and making a note to get some brake cleaner on it, and unplugging it and plugging it in during the process, the idle went up a tad which is good as it almost pulls itself away on the clutch now!

There is some oil here

post-5612-0-95886600-1541375738_thumb.jpg

Which shall be ignored for now, until it starts bubbling and getting blown about from inside the engine like the blue Laguna did at the end, I'll leave it for now, maybe a rocker cover gasket in the week. Maybe this is the oil leak one of the old MOT's said about, the side of the block is a bit oily where it dribbles down

I then made a start on replacing the headunit. The fascia kit came with keys, which saved me digging out the ones I have

The steering wheel controls plug couldn't be more different (more on that in a sec) which is a bit of an annoyance but im not that sad...

post-5612-0-51041300-1541375904_thumb.jpg

This is as far as I got before Charlie woke up. I had to go out that night so I wedged the unit into the hole roughly and had my USB stick back!

Then, to this morning! Where I ran the microphone for the handsfree kit

post-5612-0-43987700-1541375998_thumb.jpg

And the DAB aerial, and was just as lazy as with the last 2 cars it's been fitted to and it's tucked in the lip of all the door seals and A B and C pillar trims before going behind the dash!

I realised at this point that it wasn't raining, and I really needed to do the handbrake, so removed the centre console, forgetting to unplug a single thing and ripped all the connectors apart, buggar

post-5612-0-13265600-1541376217_thumb.jpg

to get at and slacken the adjuster off as per the procedure I read. I then noticed that the whole bracket was wobbling about alot

post-5612-0-07247200-1541376253_thumb.jpg

Got a good few finger turns on the bolts, then many more with the spanner... And it improved the shit out of the handbrake! Tweaked the adjuster up a few turns and it won't stop the car from pulling away, but it brings it to a stop on a mild roll and holds it still! I decided to do the drum adjustment another day, it started drizzling again at this point.

Did some archaeology, 2005 I think

post-5612-0-66511500-1541376349_thumb.jpg

Took the opportunity to give the underneath a good Hoover because it was fucking minging

post-5612-0-38808500-1541376410_thumb.jpg

There's been a drink spill at some point, so out came the G101 and a microfibre!

post-5612-0-22604300-1541376449_thumb.jpg

and it's now much nicer! Pieced together 2 of the broken plugs, the airbag switch (fucking luckily as it bought up a massive AIRBAG FAULT on the MFD with it unplugged) and the fag lighter. The alarm button (to turn the internal sensors off I think) ripped the little PCB from the pins so it now doesnt work, but since it's a button in all the cars I've owned I've never pushed, I don't really care. Bought the coin holder in for a good soak and a go with the brush, and bolted the 1 rear bolt in tightly, it's much better!

post-5612-0-49850700-1541376566_thumb.jpg

Time to run the USB cable! One of the big reasons I chose my headunit was the rear USB's, allowing for a less cluttered fascia! I just bought a £3 extension lead so I didnt have to remove the headunit whenever I got bored of music! I could use the SD card slot behind the front, but I forget its there, plus the USB mode is right next to DAB... SD is 4 pushes away...

post-5612-0-37429400-1541376678_thumb.jpg

Ended up bundling most of it up and putting it under the ashtray, which is piss easy to remove to get at it

post-5612-0-15428100-1541376709_thumb.jpg

Talking of the ashtray, the whole area is shit to put stuff as it rolls around. The ashtray itself is useless as you cant get your fingers in. Until I noticed the metal top just popped off...

post-5612-0-31532900-1541376758_thumb.jpg

Much better! Can stick my fags in there and hide them away AND get them back out

post-5612-0-36470200-1541376808_thumb.jpg

Found much fluff under the seats with them reclined right back to get the centre console in. Ended up pulling no end of fluff out of the Velour, their softer now! Had to bodge a Dyson tangle free turbine tool onto a 32mm end.

post-5612-0-61011900-1541376875_thumb.jpg

Someone on the 406 facebook group told me my radio lead ran to the back of the steering wheel directly. I took the cowling off and had a look

post-5612-0-57190800-1541376916_thumb.jpg

2 plugs have the same size connector, but no one told me quickly enough which one it was, so I battled the cowling back on and found that the wire unplugs from the wiring box, which makes it a bit neater for now. The wiring box IS needed to turn the stereo off when you turn the car off, plugged straight into the pug wiring it stays on unless you turn it off, the BSI doesnt see it and kill the power or something

post-5612-0-62415900-1541377014_thumb.jpg

Here we go. Forgot to take the FM adapter off the gooner before it went, but then I thought back to all the times I actually used the FM in the 2 years I've had the radio and just stuffed the FM aerial right down the back out of the way forever

post-5612-0-16048200-1541377070_thumb.jpg

Yes we do

post-5612-0-94368800-1541377111_thumb.jpg

Checked the DAB

post-5612-0-35797300-1541377130_thumb.jpg

Checked the USB

post-5612-0-83745300-1541377166_thumb.jpg

Then set the colour, turned off the animations it does and fettled the sound. After this I found some trim clips and used the centres to really badly stick the door seal back on as I catch it with my leg all the time

post-5612-0-61797000-1541377231_thumb.jpg

post-5612-0-45095000-1541377247_thumb.jpg

It's a shit job... New seal is apparently £30, but the last person to say they bought one from PSA was in 2010... Might try one day

Done!

post-5612-0-46065300-1541377290_thumb.jpg

Hope the bloody thing increases the range when the computer says it's doing more than 22mpg (I've done 3 miles since filling up, all very local). Gooner got 700 miles from the £70 it took, this ate £98! Will see tomorrow when I waft a 50 mile round trip

post-5612-0-99114200-1541377361_thumb.jpg

Then took my dash at night picture whilst getting a Kebab.

The battery cover is fine!  Mine feels like it is on wrong but I dont think it is. It feels like it should clip but I think it is there to ensure that it doesn't come into contact with metal.

That little bit of the rear screen it doesnt wipe is annoying.

Door seal - Mine is riveted on in the same place I assume due to your issues.

Other thing you might find is that the oil level may read low. Open bonnet and the dip stick will be sitting out. What happens is the engine cover vibrates and pulls the dipstick out. I replaced all my cover mounts for like £3 from ebay which helps.

I need to whip out my centre console and change the cig light as it is only works in a certain position.

Posted

It's definitely missing a clamp of some sort though. And someone's had the engine cover issue before as the clips have been replaced with 4 10mm studs and nits, which makes it rock solid and silent!

Centre console is very easy, but push back then recline back the front seats all the way so it lifts out past the arm rests

Posted

Ratchet strap is a suitable* battery hold down

Just keep the buckle well away from the terminals :D

I've had cars pass with a bungee strap on the battery, "loose but not insecure" or similar type advisory.

Yes it is a metal clamp it is missing. What I was saying is dont frisbee the cover - they all do that.

Top work! Always great to complete some small but infinitely satisfying jobs that'll improve your driving experience muchly... I do rather like these old buses,so looking forward to reading more about how you're getting on with this one.

I really need to get the finger out and stuff my Pioneer mp3 head unit into the Subaru, as I'm heartily sick of Cool FM but have been too feardie to dismantle the dashboard and climate control gubbins in order to do so.

Yo keepers into double figures now.

whilst you looking at service items thes chaps give good service at reasonable prices & they cheaper on fleabay than on their own website lol

http://www.ebaystores.co.uk/carwipers/_i.html?submit=Search&_nkw=Peugeot+406+2002&_sid=1024604472&

the hybrid blades are pretty decent and shouldnt look wank on a 406 compared to flat blades

A set of these came yesterday, and they would be fab if they actually sat on the screen! The blades aren't very flexible, and the long drivers side doesn't sit on the glass in the middle, resulting in this

post-5612-0-17921200-1543949089_thumb.jpg

That's the pic I sent to the ebay seller after sending a message.

According to the 406 owners club though, the arms are shit on the 406 and aren't very sprung, so don't push down too well. I bent the arm a bit which improved things slightly, but resulted in the smaller patch you see above. Doesn't help that the blade sits on either end though, lifting the middle

Will get a pair of old style blades whwn I get a refund for these, refitted the old ones just now as its supposed to rain tomorrow, their very smeary even after a good clean! Although the passenger new blade is fine, so I could spend out on a bosch or similar drivers side one which might be more flexible.

Apart from that there is nothing to report. I've done 650 miles on the last tank and have 130 left, so I'll need fuel later in the week... Erm... That's it!

So, turns out the clonking on the Zafira was a loose wheel bolt or 5... Whoops! Still, no one died.

So, that fixed, I had the rear wheels off the 406

post-5612-0-50743400-1547999864_thumb.jpg

Passenger side isn't bad. I adjusted the handbrakes and it went well. The backing plate is rusty as fuck, and I pulled a bit off...

post-5612-0-33638100-1547999899_thumb.jpg

It all turns fine, but the brake disc isn't seeing full contact... Adjusted the handbrake anyway, and made a note to return with a bottle of dot4 and bleed the brakes. I really don't want to strip them down this close to the mot, last time I did that to the blue laguna it seized it caliper the bastard

post-5612-0-00937700-1547999991_thumb.jpg

I didn't have a 320touring patented repair washer so I broke out the repair stout plastic I found on the road... Need to revisit this with some cable ties

post-5612-0-32756300-1548000040_thumb.jpg

My fears were confirmed with the back drivers tyre... Not down to the canvas yet... All the tyres are wearing the inner edge. No idea if there's something wrong with the car or they've just been rotated...

Let's have a look at the spare

post-5612-0-35797000-1548000115_thumb.jpg

Damn, that's probably going to be worse... Back on with the bald then...

post-5612-0-06876200-1548000161_thumb.jpg

The front end has had a smack at some point, and I couldn't find my cable ties, so found the string...

post-5612-0-28232600-1548000211_thumb.jpg

And a split lower ball joint cover, bollocks

So it's probably still going to be a fail in March... Tyres will be sorted, I'll replace the string with cable ties, I adjusted the handbrake inside the car to give it some travel back.

Things to do

Battery clamp

Tyres

Lower ball joints (which look like a bastard!

Strut top bearings

Bleed the brakes through

Not too horrible, bar the ball joint!
