You need to get your own personal arse-mould sorted out on the driver's seat. Give it time, Sam, give it time....

Ha I'm not that small...you're just on the tall side.

Good to meet you and glad you like the car. Feels odd with just the one car now. Obviously that's all about to change in the coming week....

You'll get a mention at the next parish council meeting, "he's only got 2 cars, is he dead?"

The family exited Charlie's party to come and have a look, general consensus is its very good. I found the masses of tools in the spare wheel kit too, which is impressive!

You and Moog are required by charter to drag race for THE KINK OF THE 406 ESTATE title.

Sounds like a crail job ... Would be up for that ... Probably finish the clutch off.

I think technically I have about 10% more horsepower

What's under the tape, if it's like my D9 = grot.

Water gets between the skins or some witchcraft.

Yes, grot. I found a few breaking cars in ebay and they all had the same issue, so I'm presuming TADTS and will just reapply when needed!

Facelift 406.

Pre facelift D8.

Also there are facelifts with D8 interior, D8.5. Crossover between the two phases, my mate had one, 2000 I think.

That is a fine motor vehicle.

There's not many places where you wouldn't be derided for the following comment: I'm jealous.

Oops. Well what better way to get to know the old tub than by giving it a service! This is of course a gamble as it could have had one last week, I just don't know!

That would involve driving to Wycombe and going to allparts. Sod that, I'll pay for the convenience of not having to go to allparts...

Dunno, didn't check. I've used Crosland for years with no I'll effects, I try to do a service twice a year though which is 6/7k for me, so they tend not to get left until they biodegrade.

If the car is still alive next spring it can have another service! Zafira gets one because its still alive and is about to enter another winter of short cold journeys. She's off to work in it now, will drive 6 miles then turn it off for the night, then drive 6 miles home and turn it off again, poor thing

They are cheap, ecp wanted about £30 the pair!

The front blades it has seem OK, although I've only used them for screenwash so far. Will give them a good clean and see how they actually are.

What I do miss is the brand new windscreen the gooner had, the 406's isn't so clean! I'll get used to it.

We went shopping in it this morning

And I'm getting used to it! It needs a lower gear than the laguna did at the same speeds, so the gearing must be different. I put it in 4th at 30mph and it struggled, same with 5th at 40. It also really doesn't like moving along on tickover, and needs a few revs. Again, sure I'll get used to that. What is also bloody odd is the tiny throw of the gearstick!

Had a look in the boot properly and there's a spare fuel filter, a bottle jack, some wheel chocks, a Nissan toolbag with some random tools in and oil, thank you previous owners! Also one new glow plug... No idea why, it starts fine takes a few churns but gets there, not really tested the battery yet though, it doesn't look ancient.

Earlier this afternoon I took eva out and we fitted the nice heavy mats from the laguna, as the ones in the car are too light and my feet move them, just need to trim the drivers one around the fuel cap release latch, went around all the bulbs and just one front sidelight was out which is was soon sorted, then I emptied my shit into it, reset the computer to see what it does for me (48.7mpg it was) and forgot to tune the radio to something other then bloody heart! Will do that in the morning. I did try a cd in the player, but it thinks about it then just ejects. My fitting kit should come early this week.

Handbrake doesn't do much mind, but it's lovely to be able to say that's a job for next year!

Check to see if its got 20p wedged in it

Sounds like there's about £6 in change wedged in there! Apparently there's a plastic bit under the car that can break, or it might have handbrake drums. Going to read up on it and have a look at that fairly quickly as in traffic coming out from work I'm crawling up a hill and use lots of handbrake action!

Sam.

I'd hang fire on the service I did the oil, oil and fuel filters at about 189k. It's got good full synthetic in it.

Bit more about the other bits.

When I first got it twas a bit sluggish to start when cold. I assumed the battery which was replaced. It's only about 10 months old. I still wasn't 100% convinced so did the glow plugs. In the end I worked out starter was culprit so if you have a look you'll see a shiny new one. Fitted at 190k.

Handbrake pads OK. Needs the adjustment done with the screwdriver through the hole in centre of disc to turn knurled adjuster.

Update 2

Previous giffer had a go at the leading edge of the bonnet with some wob and primer and grey gaffa taped it. I took that off as it had dried

up and replaced it with the military spec repair tape

Looks a good buy. I thought only mk 2 granadas and Rover SD1's had rotten bonnets.

i'm fairly certain my mates hdi90 rapier would creep fine on idle and 30 was fine in 4th

*NOTE* if you get the light of doom on the dash (fap or whatever) do the 45 mph in 4th for 20 mins thing like vw say for a polo it does seem to burn the crap out the exhaust filter

Sweet! Nice one Mr £95, I'll put the service stuff in the shed for a post winter service then! Good to know the battery is fine (it looks new) and it's just what it does, I'll ignore that too!

Gotcha on the handbrake, will not tell Amy that I don't need to service it and will do the adjuster instead.

The bonnet tape is superb, not touching that at all, it's doing its job like a pro.

Crikey so I have just bought a car I can get in and drive! Wbod win!

Don't suppose you ever lobbed a cambelt on did you?

Looking at all the 'breaker' postings on ebay its a firm TADTS thing on the 406 as well!

It drives fantastically, I had a lovely waft into work this morning! Defrosts itself bloody quickly too!

Quite glad I did scrap the laguna now, didn't realise it skipped about on the road as much, driving the identical journey in the 406 it doesn't try to tip itself off the road, and not having the back end smashing about is great too!
