The Red Baron. Surprising.

Also, I wanted a C70 for a dog's age, then to have the box sod about was like a pin in a fully inflated balloon.

I might just take take it out and about tomorrow and see how it goes.

Just feeling a tad low at the moment. I had whiplash from that shoplifting incident too. Only just gone.

I've got up this morning the same as I went to bed last night.

I'm disappointed and can't be bothered.

Anybody fancy it for £450? I'm taking a bit of a hit on this.

Might only need a gearbox service.

I haven't received the reg document back yet.

Me and Mrs Tet went out and about in this today.

I was very apprehensive to be honest.

We had a thoroughly enjoyable drive. There was one very slight harsh change down.

I've just ordered an extractor pump and another three litres of JWS 3309 (already have one litre).

So, as soon as that lot arrives, I'll be doing an atf change. If that improves matters, I'll do it again.

Stay tooned for the next thrilling episode.

The gearbox solenoids are problematic on the aisin warner box which I presume this is if it needs jws3309 fluid...initial symptoms are usually harsh changes.

Trouble is Joe Bloggs has these issues, assumes it’s low on fluid so sticks another litre or two in which does bugger all apart from overfill the box which then causes the fluid to froth and bring on torque converter slip.

To answer the original question, it's a Volvo and has heated seats and a great heater, therefore it's perfect for winter motoring...

On the other hand, if it hasn't got traction control, it might not be so great in the wet and may* also be rubbish in the snow...

Hey though, it's a convertible, so a nice sunny Winter's day on a dry road and you are the King of it! :-)

The red mats are still in place.

Yep, it's the Aisin Warner box, 50/51 I think.

Could the older style 4 speed autobox be fitted to this? Complete with loom of course. Never had a problem with the older boxes. Dexron atf and a proper dipstick tube too.

I don’t think it’d be a viable proposition tbh, too much integration with the control modules by 2003.

They’re a good box when working well but unfortunately suffered from the ‘sealed for life’ philosophy. I’ve done the solenoids on one or two now...not sure what access is like on yours but on my XC90, it’s not the worst job going. Prefer doing them to the gearbox core plug anyway...that is a shit job!

Another 99.9% perfect drive today.

Went to Romford with Mrs Tet. Again, just one small bump on one downshift, otherwise silky smooth throughout the drive.

Had the top down coming back. Lovely.

Extractor pump and atf on the way.

Did someone delete a post from this thread?

I'm sure someone did a hood repair to his mate's floppy using rubber glue and a bicycle puncture repair outfit.

I've got a couple of small wear scuff on the hood, and that struck me as a very decent idea for a repair.

Post again please, so I can ask exactly what you used.

ATF here, extractor pump still not.

I've just done a front garden atf change on this.

I used a Silverline extractor pump, and it worked very well. It pulled out just north of 4 litres.

The atf I pulled out was like Marmite, but thinner obvs. It was really horrible stuff.

I put 3 litres back in, thinking I could always top up if necessary. I let the car idle to normal temp then took it round the block a couple of times. Pulled the dipstick while idling - not an easy task on this - and it was up to the mark, beautiful colour too.

We'll see.......

Notmally you have to do that three or four times to achieve a full fluid change because there is no way to drain all the fluid out.

The post about patching the hood might bave been in 320T's Audi skip thread.

Yes, I was going to run it for a while, then do it again.

Pretty easy peasy with that Silverline pump.

Thanks for the heads up about the hood patching.

Nope, not in that thread.

I'm sure someone posted it on here, but removed the post.

Just done another part atf change on this.

It came out very dark again. Methinks this is going to be a long process, but I will get there.

3 litres out, 3 litres back in.

The gearbox responded so well after the first change, it's well worth persevering.

When I first bought this, I found it hard to find any love for it. However, this week it's been surprising me a bit.

It starts better, runs better, the gearbox, originally suspect, is performing normally now, but I will be buying some more JWS 3309 this week and doing another partial fluid change.

It used to take ages to warm up, but just lately it's getting toasty much quicker. When I first put it on the road, I checked the coolant for the first time and the level had dropped to almost the minimum mark. Topped it up, ran it for a few days, down to minimum again. Topped it up again and bingo, it's stabilised itself. Hasn't used any coolant for ages. Doesn't use a spot of oil.

The chap I bought it from was very unfriendly. He just didn't even want to talk to me and Mrs Tet really. I've contacted him a couple of times since buying the beast about things I really needed to know. He answered me the first time about the key to the tuner wheelnuts, but my second enquiry went unanswered. I haven't tried to contact him since.

I would like to have known a little more of the recent history of the car, but I'd be wasting my time asking.

So, I've been trying to work it out for myself. I think the car stood for a long time at one point, and it seems like it's starting to wake up now. It runs and drives like a Volvo should. It's starting to find its way into my affections.

So, there you go, probably of very little interest to anyone, but just my thoughts really.

Oh, and the red mats are still in there  :-D

Mannol do a relatively cheap JWS3309 oil which is a lot cheaper than other brands usually. I think SIC used it on his Saab.

This comes in at approx £7 a litre which isn’t bad for this stuff

Similar for Millers -£35 for 5l on Amazon so again about £7 per litre

Also Home Bargains do some nice luxury mats for £12. Just sayin’....

Cheers Parky.

I've been buying the ATF from Ebay. A place called Lubriage from Milton Keynes, also about £7 a litre, it normally turns up about 1 or 2 days later.

Also forgot to say, I went to put a few quids worth of juice in last week at Tesco, Rainham. They were out of regular unleaded, so I put Momentum in instead. Only a few pence dearer, but it seems to have made a helluva difference.

What I want really is the proper Volvo black rubber over mats.

Oooph, that fekker is red for sure.

Well done on the ATF change, fresh oil is the way to go and several changes like you are doing is the best way.

I've never been a fan on flushing agents, so years ago, if I had a car that needed an engine flush (based on my own view of needed) then I used to bung in a cheap 20W50, run 500 miles on it and then do another change with the Oil of my choice.

After about 3 flushes, you will only have a trace of original shite in there.

Car is ideal for this time of year, all you need is a red suit with white fluffy edging and you good to go.

Those mats, man they are far from my taste, but again, perhaps add some white fluffy edging for the full seasonal effect.

Sorry to hear about the Scroat and the knob down at the drug store knocking you off track

Diesel oil, high detergent.

Keep the red mats. They're exactly the sort of thing that will be rare in the future.

If you have a friendly local Vauxhall dealer, trade club do 20 litres of synthetic atf, FSDX 3, which meets JWS3309 spec and is around £50+vat. Part number is UKTGOT07.

Hey Parky, I bought 4 litres of the stuff you linked here.

Lubriage have sold out.

This old Fokker is running and driving really well now. It could do with one more good atf change, but the box is working normally.

I've been running it on Tesco Momentum and the occasional bottle of Redex, and it starts, idles and runs very well. Mrs Tet used it during my stay in hospital, and it got the thumbs up.

As I've been rather poorly since the turn of the year, I've not done a thing to it, too bloody cold when you're recovering from a bout of Pneumonia.

However, as the old saying says, the Devil makes work for idle hands, and I've seen a V70 that's rather taken my fancy, so, a very tentative enquiry, would anyone fancy buying this? I won't put many details on at the moment, save to say it's a 2003 2.0 litre GT auto with mot until late June.

Posted

2003 Volvo C70 2.0 turbo GT auto.

Not stupid at all, it's been de-badged. Some of my workmates ask me what it is.

I wish I could. I had a dark blue 2.0 manual as my only car for most of my twenties, loved the thing. Now I have a wife, two dogs and a baby on the way, practicality rules. I'd like it as a second car but I haven't really got anywhere to put it. Argh.

Would have a roffle ticket or two though, if it goes that way...
