1951 Pontiac Chieftain

It's a good movie, either way.

The thermal one stays, I might pull it apart and give it a tweak to slow it down a little.

Everybody's safe, it's just taken the roof off the room I put a bunch of effort into fixing up. Go figure.

One hole patched, some loose sheets secured.

Workshop roof next, that needs some new material.

Just gonna patch it up for now

Sometimes gotta take a step back to move forward.

Got the garage doors so they open again but they are well beyond it

Shall try get some wood delivered before it rains. One rafter was super rotten, need to replace it.

But, the electricity is back on. I ache all over and am going to bed.

Cleared the broken roof off the roof, pulled everything back to the least broken parts and started recycling the shattered wood into new rafters

Gave the car a wash to cheer me up a little.

Making progress with the roof.

Went for a little jaunt to town to get some nails and some pizza and some donuts.

Saw an old Plymouth Belvedere too and spoke to the guy driving it which was pretty nice. Had it 8 years, got it from his grandfather and drives it daily.

9 hours of carpentry. Roof frame is done, sealed and I've got the first sheet of steel on.

I just hurt all over. Office job made me soft!

Couple hours after work. On about a 60:1 nail to thumb ratio.

All done. Just need to paint the eave.

Looking good, but a technical observation rather than a criticism. With the edge of the roof sheet projecting past the eaves board, will this not help any wind get underneath and peel the sheet off? Can you cut the sheet off flush and get an L shaped cover flashing which can be screwed into the fascia and down into the top of the roof sheet?

You didn’t hang about getting that roof fixed! I’d still be messing around with temporary tarpaulins and swearing.

I would agree with Mr. Velcro though, a length of barge capping would be your friend there.

There's about 2" overhanging, and there's a nail every 5-6" along the top of the eave.

The metal is flexible enough to bend down but i wanted a drip edge on the eave.

My concern is the eave itself, as it is open underneath. I have tripled the fixings on the wind edge though.

Each sheet is held on normally with 40 nails.

Many years ago I had a 1966 Belvedere!  Mine was brown with a white roof, but unfortunately no engine and box.  See now?  I've always had a soft spot for a project!

Bloody exhaust pipe tip fell off on the way to the store.

I was gonna stop and pick it up but the car behind me drove over it.

So, I stopped at the auto parts store on the way and bought a new one. Without, exhaust gets up into the boot and drawn into the cabin.

I think I'll drill a couple holes through the pipe and tap them so the screws have something to get good purchase on.

Other than that, not much to report. Just been driving about a bit and trying to enjoy it.

At least you still have the skills to do it, most people I know with office jobs wouldn't know where to begin!

Great progress you've made

Decided to get a few things done.

20201112_192213.thumb.jpg.61d4d57b282cf2358a69f29cd27ee519.jpg

Dip beam adjusted against what's left of my garden fence.

20201112_192216.thumb.jpg.0b0e9140bc72c7f19d93672c3644b024.jpg

High beam doesn't point at the sky any more.

20201112_211806.thumb.jpg.03772b0158ebd088a0a3e7451c7b4d68.jpg

New oil pressure switch.

That's what 400 miles gets you in this engine. I think that's due a change. That fell out of the gallery when I changed the switch. Diesel oil pulls a lot of crap out of an old engine.

Bought some nice gloss black paint for the horns. Need to make a new bracket for them.
