Photo card driving licence

I was made aware today that the photo card driving licence automatically expires after 10 years, and that you are then required to stump up £17.50 (at this time of writing...) to renew it, even though you are licensed to drive until the age of 70, failure to 'renew' your licence could make you liable for a £1000 fine. All these £17.50 (at this time of writing  ....) renewals will certainly add up to a pretty tidy tickle for the old treasury coffers  and I wonder if the DVLA will send us out a kindly reminder letter near the time of licence expiry? mine's 24/01/12. If you look on the front of your card, the date after '4b' is the expiry date, which is sort of explained in VERY small writing on the rear of the card....

Glad I've still got an old paper one, then... :D

I had noticed that on mine too (mine 'expires' in 2012). They still don't know if they should be reminding us to renew or if they want us to try to remember to renew it.TBH, I would never have thought of looking to see if my licence had an 'expiry date'. I was only made aware of it when I read about it in Car Mechanics...Basically another 'stealth tax' for us to pay it would seem...

This is old news. I am sure I read the DVLA backed down on this one.

I'm not thrilled about the paperwork or any fees, but mine can't expire quick enough. I was 16 when the photo was taken and look younger. It's embarrassing!

So was my dad until someone 'borrowed' it to empty his bank account. Why would a bank accept a paper style driving licence as identification?

I would not like to give up my pink license, I will hang on to it as long as it's legal.

This is weird, my UK licence expired in 2048, when I would be 70, except for my bus licence which expires in 2023 (then needs a medical for renewal). Isnt there a fiddle i.e. send the licence in requesting some trivial amendment and that then extends it for free?I think the licences here are 10years max validity and £25 to renew, so quit yer moaning! :)

They've changed the design of the photocard recently - they've now got a picture of an old fashioned sports steering wheel on the back which changes colour.

Another reason for renewal. I want that on mine! :)

The licence expires when you're 70, but the photo is only valid for ten years so needs renewing.Having said that, about four years into my photocard I moved house, and had a new one issued with my new address but same photo. This seems to have extended my photocard to 2014 (I moved in 2004) but the picture is still from 2000....

As above, the photocard licence expires after ten years. The first cards were issued in 1999 and are expiring already. DVLA do not send out reminders, it's up to you to remember  Old Pink, Pink/Green and even older Green licences are still valid so long as your details are correct.

Yes, utter bumflakes I had to give up my green one for a photo one when I passed my bike test in 2000 ( driving test passed in 1988). Currently though its away with the prison service proving who I am and that Im not a terrorist for their security check (as i refuse to get a passport so had to send them umpty millin bits of paper instead).I'm assuming mine expire next year in that case. The wife still has a pink / green one. If you move house you have to get a photo one now - its ID cards by the back door if you ask me. On the plus side mine has a photo of me sporting a mexican tash and bald head - none of which I sport today.

So, if you 'move' every nine years, you could get a free renewal! Just give them a mates/mothers/work address, get the license back and then immediately change the address back!

I changed by photocard in January, it expired on Sunday, boo!

Eh? Did you mean you changed your address?

Interesting - my Ma was one of the first to get one of the photocard licenses and she claims they sent her a reminder when it expired.Mine is due to expire in September, hence I was holding out for the forms...

Our old paper driving licences mysteriously went missing when we sent them for an address change 2 years ago.Now we HAVE to pay out to get new photo ones - not in the slightest bit strange they went missing is it.

You and me both! I love the look on peoples faces when I tell them I have no photo ID... you'd think I'd told 'em I my hobby is buggering goats

The wife still has a pink / green one.

Maybe she should see a doctor?

I resisted getting a photo license for years, if questioned I would use the 'perapetetic' lifestyle I lived in my late teens/early 20's as an excuse, far easier to have stuff registered at my mums house than fannying about changing driving licence (plus V5's, insurance, bank accounts yadda yadda) every few months. It was only when I actually got knobbed in the bum for speeding (42mph on what used to be a chuffing motorway at midnight  ) that I had to sort it out properly.

They do point out if you need to change the name or address on a paper licence, they have to issue a photocard.... that's the only reason I ended up with a card in the first place, when I moved outta my mum's my paper licence got upgraded. After that address changes are free.
