We had the same experience with my Mam's stuff.

I suspect that it's because they might be damaged, unhygenic or whatever and it's safer and/or cheaper to buy them new once you consider such as the admin costs.

Did you see the contract?  No, thought not..... There is only the chassis that is the metal content in an Invacar, and as far as I know (?) The engine doesn't fit anything else mainstream in the UK, so it would cost the scrapman more to process and get shut of the glassfibre body than they would earn, so it was in their interest to sell on at a profit....unlike your comparison, it was hardly sensitive or profitable material.

Many were stolen,I can provide you with copies of the invalid carriage registers newsletters c.2001-2 that encouraged people to liberate them from repair centres and which FS key was needed (they all used the same key) The scrap merchants were paid to cut them up,not to weigh them in to see what they could get.

If genuinely stolen, not SOLD on via scrapman etc, that's something else....... But then DVLC/DVLA would not have issued a V5/V5C as there would be a stolen marker put on by the police against the registration number........

Regardless of that, surely on AS of all places we should be celebrating the fact that, over 20 years on, many of them have survived. I say that as someone with no particular interest in Invacars.

Yes, they're several decades old and by modern standards they are objectively hopeless. We all know that. The same goes for pretty much any old car, and in many ways it's their flaws and quirks that make them interesting and appealing to us.

Anyone with an interest in a specific type of old vehicle will be well aware of its many shortcomings. If safety was the number one concern here, this thread would be about Renault Espaces.

Of course the most sensible thing @LightBulbFun could do would be to go out and buy a Korean supermini with ABS, airbags and a 7-year warranty. But if that was his mindset, he probably wouldn't be on AS in the first place.

Well apparently someone did as it was quoted earlier and what I said came from that quote. They were paid to take them and destroy them with the chassis plates being returned as proof of their distruction,  they are paid to account for disposing of them so even if they were made of asbestos with a concrete chassis it's irrelevant.

I can’t speak for others but my concern is genuine. Here’s a young kid - whose driving experience amounts to driving around a cut field - being egged on to use this stupid contraption as means of daily transport and commuting to work. 

All this happening on a forum which hardly covered itself in glory the last time someone crossed the ‘eccentric’ line and went the full Stephen Fry. 

The beautiful thing about it is it’s a discussion forum. Different opinions should not only be welcomed but encouraged. People here think it’s madness, people here think it’s fine. I’m not trying to correct anyone’s thinking, merely highlight how risky and dangerous it is.

The scrap men sent the plates back then sold them to people who wanted one with either no ID or a fake one. How do I know,. because the owner of one told me his dad bought it from the scrappie and I saw the fake ID plate inside it that got initially a Q plate.

Call it theft or not, it's certainly fraud.
