Looks Greown or Brey to me. Can't quite tell.

I do like a 405.

And I've had both ends of the spectrum.

A newish shiney Mi16 several years ago and an absolute dog rough shit heap diesel estate a bit more recently.

Both were great in their own different way.

That interior is a very late Mk I GL spec which was carried over the the Mk II GLs too.  It was one of the best ones they did, super comfy velour.  Nicer than the grey striped GR one I have IMHO.

It certainly has the winning steering wheel. Lovely.

2000 miles in with the 405 now, and I reckon it's within a spit of 50 mpg, so quite happy with that.

The first real rain we've had since I've owned it caused a lot of water to get in though the sunroof into the alarm sensor.

Cue an amusing* episode where the alarm was going off at will until I got some new batteries for the factory alarm plip that came with the car but I had never touched for fear of causing a problem.

Anyway, as the sunroof doesn't actually open, I went the easy route and sealed it.

I'm off work for half term next week so the 405 will be stood down and the BX will come out to play as my daily.

You lucky, lucky bastard. That's an envy-inducing choice of motor vehicles.

Slightly offset by the usual French water/electricity interaction though :)

Missed this earlier in the year so mild apologies for the like'athon. Love a nice 405, haven't seen one since I saw an old giffer pair in an estate about a year ago....

Yesterday, I did swop over to use the BX, the 405 got dumped in the garage until I realised that I needed to ferry my son around and that he needed to eat his tea on the move.

My lad has to have ketchup on everything, and the BX interior is pristine.

Cut a long story short, I fetched the 405 back and just as we were going out my lad noticed the pool of water under it.

Investigations today reveal a split hose off the thermostat housing.

The 405 was off the road for a couple of weeks whilst I found a replacement coolant pipe recently. I ended up getting one off ebay. I had the choice of £5 posted from Lithuania, or £12.95 posted from a UK supplier. I chose the latter as I wanted the car back on the road.

It took several days for the parcel tracking number to be notified to me, but when it did my parcel was in Lithuania!

Anyway, It's been doing the business as my daily but just as the colder weather starts kicking in a new problem has raised it's head. There seems to be something that feels like fuel starvation from cold. it'll start and run for a second then cut out then if it does run it's erratic at idle. I wonder if the fuel filter has had it. I've ordered a new one just in case.

I proposed a feature series called NAMESAKES ITCH MY JONES at work where you could have dissimilar cars with the same name go head to head.

So:

Peugeot 405 vs Bristol 405
Triumph Toledo vs Seat Toledo
AMX Javelin vs Jowett Javelin
Maserati Bora vs VW Bora
Ford Maverick vs Ford Maverick
Kia Cee'd vs Lancia Strato's

etc

They didn't want it.

Why not?   Sounds better than MGB vs. Spitfire.

Fuel filters should be an annual service item on diesels, maybe six monthly if it's an oldie with gunk in the tank. The filter housings and their old seals can cause air leaks too.

Yep, and I haven't done it yet so that is first port of call.

It's an inline metal canister type, and I've ordered one from ebay.

It just feels like air is being introduced at start up.

Coming home from work today I thought it was FTP time  as on start up it died quite a few times needing wide throttle openings to keep running.

However once it had got a couple of miles under it's belt, it ran  normally.

Is there a fuel grenade or early type filter with pump fitted. If the one way valves start to fail/fail that really doesn't help with starting. As Mr Peel suggests, the filter housings can also leak in air, they also helpfully don't tend to show any sign of this by not leaking any fuel whatsoever, it took me some time to find that problem years back on my mums 306.

I don't think there is either of those.  It's just got the metal canister in-line filter. I presume it must be an electric pump in the tank as I can't see a lift pump.

Sounds like it could be the filter gauze in the fuel tank blocking up. Try cleaning that up. If run on pump fuel they rarely give trouble but a car that age may well have a blockage. My ZX had what looked like snot in it. 25 year cleaning intervals is acceptable really.
