Japan Classic Sunday in Netherlands (Loads of pics and roadtrip fluff)

Y'know how sometimes you have a crazy idea and no-one gets round to talking you out of it?

Way back at the start of the year while looking at the pics in Japanese classic magazine there was mention of the Japan classic Sunday in the Netherlands.

'It would be good to go to that!' I mentioned to Mrs. Delux. Before I knew it I was on my way in my £200 Toyota 'Rolla!

The plan was simple.

Day 1

Drive down to Eurotunnel, stay the night then drive to Gemert in the Netherlands.

Day 2

Go to car show, look at loads of cars nicer than mine, have burger.

Day 3

Yeah, you get the point.

This was all fine until my boss booked me on some training in Cirencester. So instead....

post-20757-0-81216800-1530807220_thumb.jpg

I took the 'Rolla on training with me to Colt car company. Its 400 miles from my house so I figured if it made it, it would be good enough to drive to Netherlands!

As I was there I took a few snaps of this old Mitsy Galant, in the spirit of this thread!

I've seen it there before so as I opened a flickr account because I thought I needed to. There are more pics of it there along with others in the Mitsubishi heritage fleet. My flickr account is https://www.flickr.com/photos/159422664@N08/albums/with/72157695557833582

Anyway, after the training I picked the Mrs. up at the airport and we headed off. Here is the Eurotunnel evidence shot...

After checking into our B&B and realising not everyone in the Netherlands spoke English as they do in Amsterdam we made it to the show...

There were only a few UK number plates so we had to make do snapping pics of Johnny Foreigners cars. Here is a rather nice Celica...

Good to meet you there! Yes, more pics please, as I haven't got a clue when I'll get around to sifting through mine. There was some STUNNING machinery on display.

Event organiser's mighty Datsun 2400. I think it's a Cedric, though I always get those and Laurels mixed up (please don't tell anyone).

The thing that struck me was the size of the show. At the back of my mind I kept expecting a handful of old tin in a field and loads of shitty trade stalls full of the same mondeo haynes manuals and unipart filters but it really was impressive

post-20757-0-30531400-1530906318_thumb.jpg

So thats me. I dont remember seeing the V8 President and I was surprised there were no early Evos, pajeros (mist have rusted away or broken down) and only a handful of kei cars. On the way back I was chuffed to bits with the view from my travellodge motorway service window

Rather than enjoy the 'rollas stainless, straight through exhaust for the length of the M6 we decided to drive up the east of the country and have fish and chips in Scarborough

Thanks for looking and liking. I'll go back to lurking and 'liking' pics on the one pic thread until next year!

Thanks fo posting, looks amazing and the weather must have helped turnout!

What sort of turnout for more modernz was there? Would a 1998 Celica be welcome for example, or is it a bit too new?

Was it just a show or were there autojumble stalls too?

You would fit in fine. All generations of Celica were well represented. About a quarter of the cars there were newer than ours (1996) No-one seemed bothered.

There were a few trade stalls but pretty much all the stuff for sale was for Japanese cars, in keeping with the show! If you want a 1998 brochure or workshop manual for your Celica in Dutch you would be in your element but if you want that polish in the blue bottle that works on Mini bonnets, a socket that takes off every bolt or a set of genuine unipart points you would be disappointed!

Weather was scorchio! Our faces matched our car by the end of the day!

450 cars in total, with only one dickhead pissing about (front-wheel drive burnouts for the lose) and only a couple of Skylines. The vast majority of cars were 1970s or 1980s boggo Japanese stuff. Can't really imagine a show like that in the UK.

I must go to this show one day. At present it doesn't work out well with family/school stuff, but I'm sure it won't be many years before that won't be a concern.

The white Cedric 2400 posted by DW was one of our wedding cars.

From personal experience, I'd say you could do it almost comfortably in a weekend. Friday night boat to Hook of Holland from Harwich, chill out Saturday, Sunday at the show and back to Hook for the boat home Sunday night. Gets in at half six Monday morning. Might be a bit tight for school...

Posted

How long does the ferry take from Harwich?

I'd consider the ferry to Netherlands next year rather than the tunnel because no-one mentioned that Belgium is just one big traffic jam!

Google maps reckoned Eurotunnel to our B&B was a leisurely 3.5 hours up the E40 but it took us 8 and we didnt even get lost!

We planned to get stuck on the way back but were only delayed 2 hours so Eurotunnel told us to sod off and come back later. Which inturn gave us the experience of causing a big queue in Burgerking Dunkerque while we realised our knowledge of French was limited to saying our name and identifying household pets. Plenty pointing as the menu and typing ketchup into Bing translator!

Eurotunnel was cheaper than the ferry but when you factor in travellodges, petrol and a 'quick look' round the lakeside shopping centre I'd have been cheaper sitting in the car and having a mate to DHL me over!

Posted

Ferry is about seven hours. I did overnight crossings, and it was under £300 until I started making changes. Ended up being £383 in the end...

Have they not upgraded to those self-service terminals? Last Le Burger King I was in didn't require any patter and I just mashed the touchscreen after pressing the relevant language flag. For drive-thrus, I just get Mrs H to do the ordering as she is on that side of the car and can speak French far better than I having lived there for a few years.

9 times out of ten I can't be bothered using a drive-thru anywhere, especially if there is a queue. I just wander in as sometimes it's just as quick.

Luxury ferry from Hull - Rotterdam another option. No idea of cost though.

There is a ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam too. Probably the easiest option for me next year unless they start running from Rosyth again.
