That is a void in the filter box, where you stick a screwdriver through to adjust the fuel mixture. To get the engine running right the filter housing lid must be fitted and tight to prevent air leaks.

Have you checked for resistance?

A an aside to the earlier comments of these feeling short geared, I recall that my 260e once hit the limiter in top (indicated about 145 from memory) while dispensing with an annoying vauxhall who seemed to think he should be able to drive in front of me & slow down without getting overtaken.

Posted

My 300e wasn’t busy at all around 70mph - about 2600 rpm from memory.

Maybe the different diff was for 300/320 and not ALL V6s? Dunno.

My 260e was a straight six four speed auto & it was busier than that at 70, although I can't recall the figures.

Agree on the gearing, my 230te auto was at 3400 at 70, whereas the manual was at 2800. I remember vividly my first test drive of one- I kept nudging the selector between D and 3 to see if it had got stuck in 3rd (it hadn't)

My lowly 200E is ticking over at 2,700 revs at 70MPH, in fifth (manual gearbox) and just over 3k at eighty.

When you feeling brave flip the plastic jacking point covers off- very rough rule of thumb (but often very accurate) - if there's still solid metal surrounding the circular slot for the jack= body structural condition good.

Didn’t work for me.

My jacking points were found solid but since I’ve spent £375 on welding repairs.

On all Sacco panelled W124s the sill covers should be removed annually to enable thorough cleaning.

I will do the fuck will I do.

I have woefully and completely neglected any attempt at rustproofing on my W201.   It hasn't done it any harm.   On the contrary, my molly-coddled Morrises have rewarded all my strenuous efforts by rusting vigorously.   Bugger the Sacco stuff - leave it where it is.   If you ever see rust above them its too fucking late anyway.

At least the front wings don't suffer from clearcoat cracking, like the rest of the heap does.

Every single panel is bubbling somewhere, most of them have a ding or dent and there is a quite serious one in the nearside windscreen post.

The whole contraption is oozing quite a healthy portion of old money shonkiness. Wonderful.

I thought it was advertised as rust free?

Yes, the rust was free, he didn't have to pay extra for it :)

It’s Patina on a Merc when your selling lol.

But a decent old low mileage Merc for under a grand isn’t bad.

It should be one of those cars you shouldn’t lose much money on when it’s time to sell with a bit of luck unless Mike Brewer wants to shake your hand.

I don’t get it.

For weeks, months and sometimes even years after I have purchased an old car, I have an obsessive affair with it, which sometimes borders on the unhealthy.

Junkman seems to have had a dislike for this car before he even bought it. Does not compute.

Posted

Its the hallmark of a keeper in my world.    I hated the 190E more than I hated my W124 when I bought that.   It was simply a decently safe old saloon for Mrs Rocker to use and had none of the appeal of my former W116 and W123 Mercs which had already begun trading for more than scrap money when she needed another car.

Abuse and neglect has made it much more desirable....

For me it's just a car. A car that'll give me transport until I find a car I like.

I look at it as I would at a long term hire car, but not something that will ever be an integral part of the Junkfleet.

It's also way too new for my liking.

May I remind you lot that I set out to buy a six litre V12 Jaaag?

I couldn't possibly care less about that dreary four cylindered piece of Teutotosh I ended up with.

I'm also not a disciple of the three pointed swastika on a general basis, unless it has upright headlights.

I would not* expect** anything else from the hewn from granite pinnacle of automotive history.

In fact, I would not expect anything else from any quarter century old sub bag pile of shite.

And most of all, I would never expect any seller of a used motorcar to be somewhat liberal with the truth.

I just looked underneath for the first time and there isn't a trace of rust visible anywhere.

Thanks God all structurally critical areas, including the rear suspension mounting points,

are covered with plastic cladding. And if I can't see it, I can't worry about it.

Sounds like a canny one. I wish youd stop beating round the bush and tell us what your really think of it though. You dont have to walk on egg shells round here.

Id love a dailly (post)retro like that. Dunno why I sold my brown 124coupe.

I think it is a relatively good example, body, interior and mechanical wise.

A lot of this is due to a low number of apparently quite affluent owners and sensible maintenance.

It doesn't appear to have entered the usual chain of oiks who want but can't, you know which ones I mean.

A new exhaust system and four practically new tyres underline my theory.

I don't think it would take a lot to make it exceptional, but I'm not the man to do that.

This is up to someone more enthusiastic about it.

Having said that, it certainly won't deteriorate during my ownership, no car ever does.

Why I think it is a good one:

- The interior illumination, boot light and cigarette lighter all work.

- The car is straight and strong, nothing feels worn in any way.

- The interior is exceptionally well preserved, except for the unavoidable hole in the driver's seat bolster.

- The condition of the pedal rubbers and steering wheel suggests that the mileage is genuine.

- Even those tent like fabrics at the edge of the sunroof are completely intact and not frayed, or even wrinkled.

- What few buttons it has all work.

- The first aid kit, warning triangle, spare wheel and most of the tools are still present.

- It never had a tow bar, so the gearbox isn't fucked.

- For a city car it has remarkably few "age related" marks and giffer scrapes.

What I think needs to be done to make it outstanding:

- Exchange it for a Jaaag V12 or some other ludicrous insanity on wheels.

- Source an LHD passenger seat with the same upholstery material.

- Refurbish the wheels.

- Detail the engine bay.

- Repair the rear bumper.

- Treat all the microblistering and dents.

- Complete respray.

Does the fan blower work on all its direction/temp setting/speeds?

Thats a great indicator of how well its been kept.

Most ones Ive had have had issues of some nature in this area.

The HVnoAC (what do you expect from a car that cost as much as a house?) works flawlessly.

Even that hewn from granite tape on the thumbwheels is perfect.
