Get your motor runnin`

Head out on the highway

Lookin` for adventure

And whatever comes my way

Sorry, that was hard to resist. is that getting scrappaged against a less interesting moped then, or what?

They just look too good to be regular scrappers

Certainly some of U Pull It's stock are Scrappage vehicles but there are plenty of very tidy, barely damaged write offs about.Example - customer here had a '98 / S Honda HRV. Tidy enough thing with 147k on it. He stops at traffic lights and someone runs into back of it.Damage is confined to bumper corner, rear light and bracketery behind. Estimate is in the region of £900 to fix but as insurance company value it at £1300, mindful of the fact that they 'might' find extra damage on stripdown decide the best thing is to write it off. So presumably it ends up at U Pull It or some such breakers yet it looks to be a pretty decent, tidy car.Anything 'older' with relatively low value can be written off very easily indeed.

Dunno Vic. I'm guessing from the state of it that it's either flood damaged or been thrown in the cut at some point. Either way it's a shame it can't go back on the road, as I bet it wouldn't take much to sort & there aren't many of those left now.

I see your point, and can only put it down to the ignorance of the owners/claimants, who don't know or try to get their cars back less the scrap value, why scrap something for the sake of a bumper or other minor damage?

Because, I suspect Fred, 'most' people don't want the hassle of finding someone to do the work; perhaps sourcing the parts themselves (because if you're going to take the lump sum and retain the salvage, you want to keep the costs of getting the car back on the road as low as poss.); getting alternative transport while the work is being done; and having to arrange a VIC check, or deal with trying to insure something that's CAT C or D.Far easier for them to take the insurance company's check and buy another car, which perhaps they were considering doing before the bump anyway.I agree in some cases it means a good car goes to waste, but you have to see it from the viewpoint of the great unwashed rather than biased (in a good way!) enthusiasts such as ourselves.

Ok so you (the owner of crashed&damaged) can't be bothered with a repair, there's always ebay.....

Totally unshite IMHO but why would anyone accept £2000 scrappage on a mint 1 owner 1999 Lexus IS200 SE with only 98k?, Surly it's worth over £2000?.

Posted Image

Crime of the century? - here we have a mint, 1999 Lexus IS200 SE, breaking on the Government Scrappage scheme. All parts will eventually be available, but initially looking to sell the full front end as one lot - wings, bumper, lights, bonnet, slam panel etc etc.

The colour code is 3N3 - Red Pearl Metallic and all parts are mint condition, the vehicle having only covered 98,000 mls with one local owner & full service history.

Even the dealers are morons on that one, they would get more than their grand and the government's grand back by selling it, and still have sold a new eurobox too.

In less than a minute I came up with this on ebay -

This tidy old audi is being debated about over on the classic audi forum, 54,000 miles, apparently mint- scrappage victim. The dealer (Oxford BMW) say they will sell it complete for £2100.

This seller on ebay http://shop.ebay.co.uk/merchant/jdavidsonltd Is selling scrappage cars complete on the condition they are only used for parts. Surely thats extremely risky for him? Whats stopping they buyer attempting to re-register them? Im sure hes breaking the rules by doing this- maybe hel try to sell something old and tasty!

Heres an example,

Bargain for £400.

I was wondering, would removing all VIN and engine numbers and re-registering the car on a Q plate be a workable dodge around the system?

Robbing bastards. It's a lovely old thing, but don't they make enough bloody money selling those stupid mini cabrios to estate agents? The margins must be mental on those anyway.I distinctly remember asking the sticker price on a Mini Cabrio with the ex. About £21,000 seemed to be the average, to which I replied 'Fuck me, you could buy a proper car for that'.Book on that Audi can't be more than £5-600, surely?

£600 tops I recon. Years of happy motoring left in it, or it did have.New Mini cabrio or a £600 Audi 80 in mint condition and £20,400 in the old sky rocket. I just cant make up my mind which one to go for:roll:.

THIS CAR CAN ONLY BE BROKEN FOR PARTS, A LOGBOOK CANNOT BE OBTAINED FOR THIS VEHICLE EVEN THOUGH IT IS IN EXCELLENTCONDITION IT HAS BEEN SCRAPPED UNDER THE GOVERMENT SCRAPPAGE SCHEME AND CAN THEREFORE ONLY BE BROKEN FOR PARTS, THE DVLA CANNOT AND WILL NOT ISSUE A NEW LOGBOOK SO PLEASE REMEMBER BREAK ONLY!!

Are you quite sure of that? Apply for it, and if they insist offer it for a VIC. Got to be worth a try. I say good on him, give the victims a chance! Free the cars! Free them I say!
Posted

Ive read somewhere that scrappage cars are classed as CAT B salvage, i.e spares only. Id imagine it would be quite difficult to get the DVLA to issue a logbook and the breakers who sold the car on instead of breaking it would end up in alot of hot water.Wasnt there a battle with the DVLA over a rover SD1 recently that was CAT B but had been sold on? The DOOVLA were insisting it was destroyed, despite the new owner buying it in good faith and repairing it. It only had a reprieve when the press got involved and the DOOVLA relented.

I agree, it's a tough one.But the deposit on a house wins every time

if the right thing came up, I am sure many of us on here would be happy for them to keep the VIN and the V5......

Surely the way around the system is some good old-fashioned ringing?

 Well that's what I was trying to imply, but I was trying to be subtle about it....

I suspect bullshit on that MGB roadster, or its a lot ropier than those pictures suggest. Plus they have put it down as a 1974, when its an L reg.Anyway the FHBVC has said in a stunningly complacent statement that there is no loss of 'heritage' as the majority of vehicles traded in under the scheme are 'mass market', (Comment in latest CS&C). Twat who is the spokesman looks like he spends all his time polishing the headlight brass on his 1927 Bean anyway.BTW, A car is officially 'historic' when its pre 1973, or pre 1980 according to a lot of other EU countries. Ther is no definition of classic - and trying to define when a car is an 'official' classic is a bit pointless. The USA have said that their 'cash for clunkers' scheme only applies to cars made after 1984, but then the aftermarket/classic scheme has much more political power there.

Ha, well an old B *is* practically a mass-market motor... still making 'em arent they? ;)

It would amuse me greatly if it turned out that example had already been reshelled at some stage :)

Thing is, you could speculate all you like how come it ended up where it is, possibly the old "inherited from Grandad" chestnut but an old British convertible approaching 40 years of age can have a huge repertoire of annoying/expensive/dangerous faults that your average Joe just cant be arsed with.

In any case it might well break for more than 2 large if dismantled sympathetically. That poor Audi is as good as crushed already, no f*ckers gonna pay 2100 rips for it whole and there just isnt the sort of demand for parts off it that you get with old MGs.
