Ford Mondeo Base - Sale aborted.

The earlier ones had leaking coolant pipes as well. I'll have to find it out then I'll post it. The engine itself is pretty bulletproof though apart from trouble with the coil and rattling hydraulic tappets.

The dude has bumped me back until tomorrow- wife unwell.

I’m very conflicted. I’d much rather keep things simple and have it as a single owner, but it’s almost impossible. I’d have to borrow the money and keep it at work to get past management. ie pointless

Will report back as soon as I’ve seen it.

@Sierraman - remember you did that Mondeo buying guide thread? Can you find it, cos I can't.

Check for hot air coming into the cabin too once up to temperature. If blower motor only works on one/two speeds, less of a problem, just a new resistor.

Check also power steering pipes, run along the subframe on the left hand side as you stand in front of the car under the bonnet (north/south). They rust out as exposed to salt and muck all the time. Can be bodged.

Can I also add to check the coolant hoses in the same area, along the bottom of the car on the left hand side from standing in front of the car - these rot out and piss all the coolant everywhere which leads to temp gauge heading east and OMGHGF quite rapidly*

* speaking from personal experience.

EDIT: Sierraman has just mentioned it, soz.

As said these will get pricier pretty quick soon even shit ones. Would complement the Sierra mind. Im in for a donation (small cos skint).

Stop chucking cars away for nowt! These deserve a better fate, now.

I'll bear you in mind next time I've got one with a failed clutch, if you are happy to blow £450-500 on one. I realise they will probably be worth a few Bob one day but you can go on forever like that.

Crikey I thought this was going to be THE bASe for a minute...it looks like good value at that price, but I wouldn't ever be able to offer anything in the way of storage and it doesn't really push my OMGGOTTASAVEIT button - so I don't want to end up financially responsible if it turns out to be a basket case.

GLWTS though, would subscribe to a thread about it.

how come the clutch is such a big deal on them then, is it an engine out job or summert?

I've known people do it on the driveway, but they're all safely tucked up in their padded cell now.

Not difficult as such just very labour intensive. The official ford way was to drop the engine and box out with the subframe and split it, people generally drop the subframe down just enough and pull the box out that way though. Pain in the arse whichever way you go about it.

Mad to scrap a good car for want of a clutch.......especially if a toy rather than transport.....just do it at your leisure

Good of you to offer dude.

Depends what you class as leisure. Crouching down inside the arch taking the weight of a gearbox doesn't sound like the sort of leisure I fancy doing at the moment.

If you'd got access to a lift and a proper transmission Jack its a slightly different story. Anyway could have had a new clutch put in recently, stranger things have happened. Could be a real pearl or it could be a nail. Chances are if you turned up with £250 in your hands you'd take it away.

I've never done one on a Mk1, but I can confirm its a monumental bollock ache on a Mk3.  There is nothing specifically difficult about them (other than having a subframe which needs dropping) it was  basically just that everything that could be a bastard was being a bastard.  Exhaust bolts seized solid, balljoints wouldn't separate, intermediate driveshaft pulling out of the cup and the CV joint falling to pieces inside the rubber boot, shitty access (although it was a V6 which didn't help our cause) I wouldn't volunteer for another.

I have changed an Autobox in an A Class merc before and even that was less hassle than the Mondeo.

Ive got a new front shocker for one of these if anyone on here should buy it, you can have it for free.

Yeah the A class was a fun weekend - actually two weekends because it was remove, send to be rebuilt and then refit. After that I erroneously believed any job from that point forward would be easier and therefore no problem.

A Mk1 four banger probably is a lot easier though. Do we have reason to suspect it’s gone or is it just worst case planning?

I don’t want one, but if I did I wouldn’t let a fairly simple job like a DIY clutch decide the fate of a nice example.

You won’t be able to keep finding and discarding them.

Same as every other FWD car which has a subframe then.

Someone’s doing well for themselves then!

The car is between Cambridge and St Neots. I’m glad I didn’t see it today as he was nervous about any test drives in the snow. Tomorrow looks a bit more hopeful and the weekend better still. If you want to buy it I’m happy to meet you at a train station (in the Sierra if you like!) and help with logistics.

I’ve got a good feeling. The lack of any meaningful MOT fails in 11 years and the absence of even an advisory about rust is promising. Obviously it could have had a massive weld up in 2004 and we’d be none the wiser. My Dad’s M reg Mindeo never saw its 11th birthday and he always kept it immaculately.

No they'll naturally reduce in numbers I appreciate that. But on the other hand I've not got an obligation as a curator of Mondeo Mk2s. I'll move on to other Mondeos/Focuses.

I meant PayPal credit. I don't have any actual money...

It's just the recent breakdowns in the 'Mini' have lead me to think I should have 2 cars. And if I could save this at the same time....

It would require it to be listed on eBay though.

I didn’t even know that was a thing. Jesus - imagine the shit I could already have been in (!)

What if someone buys it and then sends you an invoice?

That doesn't sound like a disaster waiting to happen at all

I bought a BMW Mini Mr B, the disaster already happened!

The plan was to save up for a bit, so I can have my own car (The Mini is my other half's car really),but I'm fed up with it already.

If you're penniless (like I currently am), here's a tip - don't spend £300 of borrowed money on an old car you didn't even know about till 3 hours ago.
