AS Communal MK4&5 Mondeo Thread

Mine will probably be for sale shortly, once I've had the tracking done on Tuesday.  I like it, but I like the Rover 75 more and it's a bit pointless keeping both.  It's done just over 200k and has what I suspect to be a slightly noisy DMF, but it's fairly tidy apart from a dent in the nearside doors and it has pretty much a full service history.  Will be about £750 I reckon.

So I looked at this today.  It looked ok, couple of small slightly rusty bonnet stone chips and a little scuff on the driver's rear arch but no big deal. Drove ok, mostly smooth and quiet. It did remind me that I don't really like diesels and the rear quarter visibility is pretty shit. Tyres looked ok if all mismatched death rings (he looked to be a tyre dealer too).

But;

-Seemed a bit reluctant to start, needed a bit of cranking (because diesel, maybe?)

- Aircon seemed non-op,  or very poor.

-light on dash re;autoheadlights non-op

- wheel and gearknob looked like they'd done 500k. Gearknob was falling apart.

- no history whatsoever, despite the advert and him saying there was on the phone.

Any one of them individually wouldn't necessarily stop me (except maybe the aircon because I really want it) but all together meant I didn't bother making an offer.

That 2.5 would be fun, they’re proper 150 mph cars and will do 35 mpg if you’re careful. We’ve had an ex Police estate one in the family for 5 years or so and it’s never had anything much go wrong. Last summer my brothers son-in-law drove it down to Granada for my daughter’s wedding. It was loaded up with not only his Mrs and 2 kids luggage, but loads of stuff for the wedding. Didn’t miss a beat in 47degree heat and used about half the fuel my daughters XC90 did on the trip.

Presumably thou can do all the stupid things Focus ST/RS and Volvo T5 owners do to get an easy* 300 bhp too.

Check the DMF by releasing the clutch VERY slowly. Sometimes when these bollocks up it chucks the filings into the starter. On the other hand could be the fuel filter blocked. Either way just look for another without issues.

Also £2200 is steep. The bollocks about Sold as Seen makes me think it’s fucked and he knows it is.

Next candidate. Might and view tomorrow if I can be arsed.

103k, CatN/C/whatever, full test. £1850 and about 20 mins away.

Or maybe this. 98k, full test, new clutch and fly. £1900. Ghia interior not as nice as TitX I think.

Got a Vectra Sri 1.8 not too far as well. 1.8 Pez, 130k, £1000.

Also any thoughts on the 1.8 dizzle and 2.0 petrol Mondeo? Best given the swerve? They seem a bit pointless.

The Vectras are alright but the Mondeos you’ve shown there are streets ahead of the Vectra. I paid £1200 on one this year, it’s a nice car, you see loads that have done 250-300k. Check the DMF though, most of the sub £2k ones will rattle a bit, they’ll go for ages until it gets bad though. I was quoted £600 for another one fitted with the clutch and csc, so it’s not the end of the world when it does go.

One of my 1.8s started rattling it's DMF on the Monday and was fucked by Thursday. Maybe about 800 miles in my usage? That was a 5 speed hatch on a 09 plate.

I guess you are cabbing them so it’s hard on the clutch anyway. I’ve had albeit the Transits and they’ve gone for a few thousand on a rattly DMF. That said the 1.8 is hard on the DMFs as they don’t last as long as the HDI based units. I mean at the prices they are on an early one you take it as found, that’s to say worry when it gets bad!

Late 07 onwards you are looking at the wet belt on the 1.8 but in reality could be either. We’re talking a grand or so here, if the DMF isn’t rattling buy it and run the bastard. If the belt goes then it goes. The 2.0 is ok, I had a Mk3, not that bad on fuel (32-34mpg) but you want the diesel really, it suits the car.

The 1.8 dizzler is a bit rough but mine did 400,000 miles before my bad judgement killed it. A1.8 with the wet belt swapped for a chain and equipped with a 5 speed box and a solid flywheel conversion is an entirely sensible choice. Only thing to consider is that the 1.8 diesel was only fitted to the Mk4a so the youngest example is now a decade old. Another thing to consider is that the 1.8 with its wet belt scared off most cabbies (except me obvs) as most prefered the 2.0 as cam belt failure wasn't fatal meaning you may get a 1.8 that's had an easier life.

Looks a good one, belt is 10 years or 125k. Might have had it done already, who knows. Not a game changer either way, the under the arches type place at the end of the road is tackling mine when I get round to it, 2.5 hours labour, wasn’t worth fucking about myself to do it, belt and pump parts was £75.

This is now down to £2200. Should have tried for a viewing today bit couldn't be arsed. Might look midweek and make a low ball offer, it's only a few miles away.

Also got my eye on a couple of Avensis too, one a T180. Don't know anything about them but that '180 must be pretty quick for a boring family wagon.

Never chance a belt for a decade and an eighth of a million miles unless you have access to a cheap set of rockers! I changed the one on my 2.0 diesel at 85,000 miles which is when I bought it. My 400,000 mile 1.8 had benefited from a recent cam belt change but I sadly fucked up by assuming that the wet belt had already been swapped for a chain long before then.

A DMF starting to die at 200,000 miles isn't really that bad. :) Some people bitch about that like it's an unreasonable length of time.
It's horrible and inevitable though, but starter motors aren't that bad to change on the TDCI engines (everything from the top/front).

Known plenty last 80-90k though. It’s not as bad a wallet bashing as it once was I don’t think.

We have a new one in the crew. My mates wife bought this white estate as a baby carrying wagon, until she finds a suitable Beamer.

It may then be sold, or may replace the black one.

They are both Sports with options, the black is a remapped 2.2 TDCi, but the white one is a 2.0 Ecoboost! A rare bird indeed.

It even has the rear blinds in the door cards. Ideal for them.

That sucks. They aren’t known as Powershit for nowt.

I hope the one in my mates new Ecoboost Sport behaves itself.

i think it was just the very early ones which were particulary bad, no? This was 2011, mine was a 2010 and had the reliable vera wang box in it or whatever they are called.

I dunno much about them TBH, mate. If I owned a one worth arsing on with, like an Ecoboost, I’d be looking into a manual swap.

I do know that the non-PS boxes which I guess yours was, are the ones that seem to last.

£1500 for your mates, eh? That would make a good breaker, if nothing else.

What the traders are asking is a bit salty. My dads ghia had 125k on the clock, timing belt/ pump, tyres, brakes and dampers as well as a spoiler and the big wheels - it sold for £970 on ebay.

Hmm, that looks fairly reasonable and it's not too far away. Let's check the test history on it;

The TPMS on the Mk4 is a notorious weak spot. That should have it fitted so make sure it works.

Did Ford offer them with RunFlat tyres? I seem to recall seeing them once or twice.
