Rover 75 May just be okay after all. Maybe....

and some not so good news..............

Good news first. Started first turn of the key, no feathering of the throttle required. Lovely smooth and even idle. Smooth throttle response.

No obvious leaks identified. Car run up to temp and a mixture of idle and revving took place. Spiffing.

The other news. Bloody low on petrol so limited amount of time running ensued.

Still some burn off on the outlet manifold, although that has to be expected given the soaking that it has received. No new leakage spotted.

Still shite pumping out of the exhaust, again tobe expected and hopefully should clear up. I will bung some cleaning shite in the tank with the fresh petrol. can't take it for a good run today as builders are gutting next door and they will grab the space quicker than a quick thing, so that will have to wait until Saturday.

I took a video but will have to work out how the fuck to put it upon here as photobucket doesn't want video clips any more.

So.................. tentative success, I think. Maybe.

So, new cam cover gasket, needed anyway, new plugs, totally needed anyway. Inlet manifold gasket, needed 'cos did.

The exhaust will be full of condensation so will take a wee while to burn off. Hopefully another rover that has been saved from the OMGHGF myth.

Am sure it will given a bit of time.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for the info and support.

Didn't help that I am not on my game yet re:health and it doesn't take much for the woe and misery levels to hit max at times.

Am pretty hopeful that this has resolved the issue. I do hope so. Will continue to update until fully resolved.

FTFY

Sounds very promising! I wonder how many K-series engines were scrapped due to the belief it was OMGHGF, when actually it's a leaky inlet manifold gasket?

Just illustrates how hard it is for anything to free itself of a reputation.

Another 5% on top of that for not changing the stretch bolts after doing the needless job

I've been banging on about this for years, and usually get shot down in flames, symptoms are the same as hgf, missfire, loss of coolant, water in a cylinder and steam out the exhaust... If not caught in time it will lead to hgf, if coolant drops, airlocks form and you get localised overheating.. then the cat gets poisoned with OAT, so there's a bill that will write off an otherwise good car, for a fivers worth of green gasket.Nice one Ken for having a go :)

Good stuff Kenzo_Nagasaki, that sounds like a fairly major victory to me

Yay! When this is still around in another 20 years, someone will be cursing about those missing threads and long bolts. :D

But at least it has a chance to live till then now!

It's a joke innit.  Becoz the image of a Rover 75 driver raving is, in all honesty, very amusing.

I may have been guilty of thinking of something else entirely

Nah, lol. Chucked some fresh petrol and some injection cleaner in a little while ago. Started her up and the revs went loopy, idled at 1150 RPM. WTF!!!!

Had alook in the engine bay and saw that my repair* had failed on the plastic tube that was circled in an engine piccie earlier in the thread. Pushed it back in and the revs settled to a lovely level again, phew. I  will lob some more araldite stuff on it shortly but my question is..... can I do away with the that bit of round gubbins on the end of the pipe and just connect the two bits with some rubber hose or will nuns and kittens expire?

Oh, meant to add. The coolant has burned off the manifold now so no moar smoke and the exhaust smoke has also more or less gone. Big yay!!

Nice one, Ken. Good man for getting stuck in and sorting it despite health issues and bastard cold weather 8)

Apart from being being a clumsy twat and breaking a couple of albeit pretty brittle pipes, it wasn't as bad as I thought overall. If the thread issue hadn't happened it would have actually been an easy fix.The bloody cold weather did not help one iota though.

So, this is the troublesome bit. Obviously has an impact on revs but apart from that I have no iodea.

What is it? Can I get one? Where can I get one? Or..... can I just remove it and fit a nice piece of rubber hose between the two things?

Really good to hear. Sounds like i will have a sporting chance when I do mine.

Did you just topup the coolant?

looks possibly vacuum pump thingy, or even flame trap??? try joining, nowt to lose... its only kittens n nuns..

Isn't it heading to the Servo? If it is it must be vacuum pipe.

Isn't that the PCV valve? Hard to tell from that picture. Stick a piece of rubber tubing between the two, or seal it all with a bit of automotive silicon sealant. Those type of pipes seem to go more brittle than a MP keeping to their promises.
