Despite being left for over a week the Range Rover started first turn of the key. Hopefully the starting issues are behind it, although IIRC the present battery dates from

My first ownership stint and is around 8 years old now.

Took it for a drive with Essexman_jr this evening......

Fossil fuel combustion at dusk

I went for a drive in the XM, just because. It's really odd. It makes a knocking noise when driving downhill, and only downhill. What the hell is that? It's cyclic, but isn't clonking quickly enough to be wheel/brake related I don't think. Perplexing.

It was worth doing as that clonk and others were conspiring to make me have naughty thoughts about selling it. However, as soon as you get out on the open road (rather than the tiny excuses for a road we have around here - much more Dyane/Nippa territory), it's sheer joy.

Also, the autumn colours are just GORGEOUS. I didn't get any pics because I was having too much fun.

Excellent! I look forward to seeing it!

Mrs Foxhake may have just fallen in love with it.

Future TBC.

Still got another French diesel to pick up tomorrow yet.

I hope she doesn't like all of them, I'd have to keep them all then...

Petrol station flowers on the way back with it, it'll be fine.

I take it you'll be paying using the winnings from your fruit machine.

Currently enjoying hospital food thanks to a flair up of blood poisoning.

On my third bag of saline with potassium added and pissing like a horse.

Sleep deprivation should be turned into an Olympic sport as our hospitals would win hands down

Looking at that lot expect a flare up of food poisoning.

Mk3 Cortina! Winner, winner chicken dinner!

What you don't know is you're coming along to check the fucker out!

I wouldn't trust my judgement, have you not seen the state of some of the shit I've bought! Looking at the photos it doesn't look too bad, I guess it's been imported at some point as they aren't english plates, nor on the Mk4 behind it.

Posted

Yeah definitely not English plates, allegedly on an L plate now. I did make it clear to the seller though that if I did win, any bid would be conditional on me being completely satisfied with the condition and he was fine with that.

First thought is droplinks. Second thought - how're the engine mounts? Does it happen when coasting or under power?

How so? FC7777 is on the MID. And on Cartell. Seller says he's fannied around with the DVLA to get it shifted off the car. In the two updates the seller gave, he gives the current reggy. Two goes and even with the paperwork in front of him he still can't get the replacement reggy right. It's 955 not 995.

Anyway, JohnK, yellow is just so WIN!

They look a bit like Hong Kong plates.

Could be on the system for import purposes?

Posted

I was thinking Maltese plates? Especially as there's a Mk4 Cortina with it also on similar plates.

Well bought.

That is the exact spec that my dad had and the spec I described a few days ago on here as being the one that I would have if I had the dosh. .

Daytona Yellow is lovely.

That is such a lovely looking car.

It should have black vinyl seats :)

Whereabouts is it?

FC would have been an old Oxford issue. Whilst I know that up to a point (1980s?) RoI registrations made it onto the DVLA register, I don't think marks from anywhere else were transferable. Assuming all this, although I've seen it before, why put a cherished number on a bread and butter motor?

Further to the point why do it twice?

I reckon engine mounts. Shortly after it started clonking today, I had to brake really hard to avoid a coach on a single-track road. It was then a real struggle to get it out of fourth gear...

But that clonking only happens going down fairly steep hills off the throttle, and as the knock doesn't seem speed sensitive, wobbly mounts seems likely.

I forget the layout of mounts,  but from the description I'd say "gearbox-ish to firewall side" rather than top or front. Those gear linkages are a bugger, mine popped off once and I could only get second gear IIRC.

Sounds like the bottom engine torque link if you are having gear selection issues DW .

As previously mentioned I bought an old S Class Merc on Thursday, local but 6 years out of t+t, with collection pencillled in for Tuesday. A friend who was doing Police recoveries last night said we could go and get it if quick. Result! Err, no, called the seller who had gone away with Merc keys in his van......

one more thing to be mindful of with modernish pertrels if they dont start straight off the ecu may adopt the flooded "carb" routine where you need to crank the engine with FULL throttle until if fires and runs right

this can happen if you start up and switch off straight away- nissan primera i'm looking at you

This advice got it going this morning.

Thanks to the Autoshite members involved for making me look like the street's resident CAR-GENIUS. 8)   :?

Ordered a new old-style rear plate for the Fiesta earlier from DMB Graphics. Also managed to find an image of a Dagenham Motors rear window sticker which would have been fitted in 2001 and managed to get that too. SO EXCITED.

^ brilliant! It's these details that really finish a car off nicely IMO. being a 2001 reg date is it a new/ old reg format and what font did you go for?

Edit- should have read it more carefully- old style- will look great when it fitted.

^^ I've got new style plates currently on the 166, complete with euro gb thing on them too, planning on getting some old ones made up here too. Anyone know what logo Alan Day Alfa reading would have used in about 2000?
