every shiters worst nightmare

Yes, I met someone last week who lost a car in this fiasco. Terrible situation.

Shit, that's horrible. I'd be devastated.

I know what it's like to get bad value for money but that's a whole different level. I wonder how many of his customers are now finished as far as their cars go? Not having the cash backup to start over and their cars are obviously worth much less now too.

They need to track him down and lock him in a room with all the people he has ripped off

BBC messed up listing that article as Derby IMO.

Derby is 50 miles from Glossop and as far north as you can call Derbyshire.

Manchester is 15 miles from Glossop.

Article is going to the wrong audience, should be under Greater Manchester or High Peak or whatever actually covers that.

I had wondered what happened to that Mini place.

Lazy journalism. Derbyshire, so much be near Derby right? That's how counties always* work.

Still, it's a sad story. Car restoration is an expensive business so I guess people hand over large sums of cash without too much worry. It's also pretty normal for restoration to be cash up front or as you go, rather than mechanicing which is payment on completion.

Exactly this.

I restore classics for a living. We are a small garage but have a growing portfolio of quality work.

There is a great deal of trust on the customers part. They are not only trusting you with their prize possession, they are handing over quite substantial amounts of money at each stage.

What I do with every job is document the progress with photographs online for all and sundry to see. This way, the customer can see exactly what is happening at every stage and be assured that the work is going ahead and to the standard that they expect.

This story really makes my blood boil. It really is bad news and i hope that he is held accountable

Absolutely, and I wasn't trying to tar everyone with the same brush but a couple of high profile stories like this and suddenly nobody wants to trust anyone any more.

You'll need to have £50k in the bank so you can fund a customer's car restoration and hope they pay up at the end - and we all know if they don't, the cost of restoring a car isn't the same as what you can sell it for to recoup costs.

Alarm bells would ring if I saw too many stripped cars 'being restored'. Proper places only have two or three vehicles undergoing restoration at a time.

Looks like he has been stripping customers cars - not sure if it was to finish other customers cars off?
