Its probably a bit late but have you tried https://www.autodoc.co.uk for discs? They seem to list a good selection of parts for older cars.

I recently purchased some brake calipers from them for my w123. Cheapest I could find from ebay or my local motor factors was £90 per caliper, autodoc had them for £45 each.

I will try them if the calipers cannot be salvaged Foad,ta!

I searched high and low for discs, and I am as sure as I can be that the ones ordered are the only ones available

Did you actually ask the seller if they had them in stock ? When I wanted discs for a Talbot Horizon last year there were lots of sellers listing ebc discs but none actually had any stock. Not very helpful I know but might be worth checking other suppliers in case you get the email about 5 days later telling you they have no stock and refunding you.

Well I don't know, the number available fell from 5 to 4 after I placed my order. So I may just have hit lucky. In any case, it hardly matters, nobody else has got any!

Have you measured the disc thickness to see whether they can be turned?

BigDan30's professional opinion was: "They're totally and utterly shagged". I didn't probe further.....

Ditto Allegro discs from some eBay seller. I was most annoyed that it took them a week and a phone call before they admitted they didn't actually have the discs they'd listed. They were 'trying to find some'.

The discs have apparently been despatched, let's see what actually arrives

Whatever they do send, it probably won't produce as much profanity as the "Weldathon" that lies ahead!

In other news, the tyres have arrived!!

Budgets are fine.  We're not going to be smoking a track day, are we.  All it needs is to get to Shitefest Bulgaria and back.

Oh and make it 5 tyres as you'll be wanting a spare

Agree -  I'm sure I'll need tyres on the herald as it's been sat fro 3 years - budget rubber will be more than good enough for a 60odd bhp herald.  -  Unless I can find a deal on them.

a stupid question but what size are the tyres? is there not a modern wheel that could be fitted to get it rolling

The tyre size is R185 80 14 - quite obscure, but available still.

The PCD is some weird enormous size, you could put your head between the studs almost!

Tyres are a constant source of terror to anyone owning a TX with Imperial Michelin TRX rims (£220 a corner) - I have had offers of very good money for my old and battered steel rims, because they are such a money saver in the long run!

Apparently the wheels off a Renault Master van have the same pcd if you drill out the wheel centres, but really, who wants van wheels on a R30?

Posted

fuck that, just had a quick google and it'd make me want to sell the car!

Oh I want to sell the car every day - one slight snag: nobody is THAT daft, hence I decided to do a fundraiser - and it's going really well!

Well, you're into van tyre territory anyway when you ask for 80-profile at most stockists

You can have a number all the same. I'll put you a random on. A quid is appreciated, like you say, if everyone donated a quid, the fundraiser would be done!

On that reasoning, if I add another £1 to my already pledged £20 I'll get get two tickets!  Hurrah!

Absolutely, the rules of the draw were devised by Mr Datsuncog who kindly donated the prize, and it says "Make another donation, get another ticket"

What we don't want to do is to give different numbers of tickets out based on the size of donation - one ticket per donation, big or small is the rule

Posted

With grateful thanks to everybody involved, we have, between donations (of money, but also some parts, enticing roffle prizes, time, skills and labour), and a Peugeot 106 roffle,  raised a staggering total of £440, which is enough to get this beast moving and moved.

I have therefore decided the time is right to close the fund.

I look forward to seeing you for your promised R30 rides if I am still alive, it seems that the car, in any case, will be!

Regarding the roffle for the pocket Renault, if anybody else wants to take up their number, please do let either myself or Datsun cog know, and we can run with the roffle!

A life of a thousand summers to those who stepped in to help when all seemed lost!   :-D

A curse of a thousand winters to those who made snide comments elsewhere on this forum!

I did some search regarding rear discs in France and Germany.

All to no avail. All vendors I tried do list them, but have none in stock.

Suggest to follow my initial idea of Berlin Walling it and go for a 20 instead, ISIS threat nonwithstanding.

I mean, I'd rather be blown up than having to obtain normal wear and tear spares for an R30.

Why don't you abandon the whole French idea and go for an old Chevy instead?

Bits for those are available like water.

Well thanks for the efforts, if not the sentiments expressed Junkman!

I would love to get that 20 over from Ireland at some point, but we can't just cut up the R30 in it's favour!

Actually a Fuckwit rang me via the carandclassic ad the other night:

"Hello?"

"Wheere arre ya?"

"Sorry?"

"Wheere arre ya?"

"I'm at home. Who's this please?"

"It's me, Daz."

"What can I do for you?"

"Would you swap it for a trailer mate?"

"I have recently advertised a car for sale. If you're referring to that, I have no need for a trailer, sorry."

"Well you're a pissing nugget, aren't you? It's totally fucked!"

"Well why do you want it  then?"

"Clever Cunt!"

"Anyway it's being restored, no longer for sale mate"

"There's nowt wrong with this bastard trailer, just the lights are on the piss!"

"You and all by the sounds of it. Goodbye!"

"Kiss my arse!"

Junkman takes a deep breath.

Junkman says: We need REAR discs, NOT (!) front ones!

This means, we need the brake discs for the back axle of the car.

Which is the one closer to the boot and at the same time the one further away from the engine.

Hinten, da wos Arscherl ist. Nicht vorne, da wos Schwanzerl ist.

Junkman can bury you with front ones.

Regarding rear discs listed on the referred website:

Derzeit nicht auf Lager

Sigh...

I'm breathing in, and out, and in, and out...

Fuck that. I'm going for a fag.

I read that there are rear discs required which makes me wonder why there are Bremsklötze available but no discs. And why are there..

1-2-3 Autoteile maybe a possible source, website delivers nothing, can give them a call.

Y-reg is 1982? 2,6TS?

Actually it's a 1978 car, don't know where the Y reg came from, that applies only to the Austin Ambassador!

I'm having the opposite problem finding brake calipers for the Volvo.  There are hundreds of bum-end calipers available at reasonable prices, but willy-end calipers seem to suddenly be made of unobtainium, and everywhere that lists them is out of stock.

I can, however, get a pair of willy-end discs for a very reasonable £35 delivered. *smug*

Rear brake discs can't be hard to make. Just a circle with some holes drilled into it.

If Doubleyeller buys me about 50 large metal tins of Roses...

S-reg, pardon, just looked it up, 1978.

So, local independent parts shop cannot obtain rear discs (as expected), inquiry at a Renault dealer results in computer showing parts only from R25 on and newer. Friendly bloke said he could investigate only having the VIN at hand and suggested to call again. It is a very old Renault house, so maybe chances of old stock...

ebay Kleinanzeigen showed up with a guy selling various 20/30 stuff, maybe of interest: https://www.ebay-kleinanzeigen.de/s-bestandsliste.html?userId=9331764&pageNum=1&sortingField=SORTING_DATE

The problem is we are dealing with a very early car here.

Post facelifts were severely updated and the rear brakes of the facelifted ones were carried over to the 25.

I wonder whether the car can be updated to the 25 brakes, which are also used by the contemporary Espaces.

I find it hard to believe that the early 30s had totally specific rear brakes not compatible with anything else,

but my research did not yield anything. If we could find out whether there is any other car using those discs,

we could broaden our search.

My research wants to see a picture of an actual disc for comparison purposes.

As all aftermarket parts catalogue references are horseshit.

And there must be also differences between cars up to and from 1976 as the early Typschlüsselnummer is different. VIN or parts number necessary, maybe the owner would have a look?
