I thought the rear lights were carried over from the Mk1 van, but I'm sure I'll be corrected..

Out of curiosity Did anyone grab the vin plate? Based on value and putting aside ethical and legal issues it's the most valuable thing there. It depends I suppose on what it's down as as well

Oops, I forgot to mention, I did get the VIN plate.

How is it worth anything?

Of what you've got put the following on ebay

Glass list as mk1 2dr,

Same for door handles,winders etc,

The clocks won't sell as no rev counter, steering wheel & rear lights ( later fit mk1/2 van) might sell.

Clock surround should sell.

Unfortunately you left the stuff that would sell, another to list would've been servo & mount.

Diff would've been a 4.11or 4.44 & fetched well over £100

The mk1/2 estates used the same rear lights (different to van) transit were bigger & slimmer.

Trust me some on here scoff when they see rotten mk1/2 escorts sell for several hundred quid ,but you'd be surprised what sell & for how much.

Even rear parcel shells with no speaker holes sell once cut from a rotten shell.

Those rear doors would probably sold too & yes same as 105e van.

I know a couple of people who make a living breaking escorts in this sort of condition

Personally I'm failing to see how the VIN plate is worth anything more than its weight in metal unless you're the type to steal a fully restored van and change the ID. I guess you could import a left hooker van, convert it to RHD and slap the VIN on to make it more valuable but that's still not exactly legit.

So no, I've no idea how a VIN plate is worth money.

I would have made use of the property lads grinder to cut out the rear spring hangers n relieve it off its axle; front bumper was worth taking; theres a mk2 scort rally class here, n the ford lads are always looking for front end bits, after a bit of pushing too hard ends up in a stoved front end...

... time can be the enemy, with these things, as can energy levels; I was extracting a mk2 vw caddy rear beam with its leafs to make a 'handy trailer' *(future build) this morning at 11am, at a mates yard, struggling with rusted bolts on the leaf springs in the pissing rain, wondering 'how did my life come to this'... ' 'I should have a top whack paying job, where I just buy a small trailer, n get on with my life' but 2.5hrs later all the shackles n leaf springs were off n I was commending myself for my stubborn persistence, like the skint fool I am...

anyaways, whatever about the war taking them bits off, theres the 'remarketing of said bits, which makes you feel like you've well n truly earned the money; the vin is probably marketable on e-bay as a 'sentimental wall-hanger' - nudge, nudge, wink wink, but think of all the mouth breathers that you'll have to deal with...

One thing you guys must understand is this car has sat rotting in a boggy garden for so long that the bodywork was 100% knackered. Everything from the roof panel to the floor was rotten, the bulkhead had holes in it, you could see the engine under the dashboard, the front panel was made of rust, there was no way I could have removed the bumper without lifting the car (the bumper was damaged anyway)....and so on. Also, the two lads with the grinder told me that my time was up, I had to finish my pillaging as they had to cut the car up before sunset.

The Daf took the lads three hours to cut up as most of it was solid and there were intricate box sections to contend with. The Escort on the other hand took 45 minutes. The roof was off in about 3 minutes (I stood around and watched).

What’s done is done, I had a little fun and may get a drink out of it.

I had offered to get it hiab'd if it was local to me

Sheffield Cortina Centre made the same offer to remove it and pay.

Those uncut sides and roof would have sold as well to someone who had had one converted to a camper.

Too late now.

Knowledge is king; it's how I turned a non running 300 quid 1982 525i with no rear axle, rotten panels and a 1994 tax disc into £2000 in 6 weeks. Stripped the car in situ one Saturday and left them the shell. Not a bad day's pay.

A 1300 Xflow is worth money. So is a standard 1100/1300 box, a prop, that axle.

I'd have given a hundred quid for the Escort and picked it clean, chuckling all the way home.

In a sane world the Daf would be the only subject of discussion. The best action would have been to nab just the bits that make it righthand drive, nip over to Malta and buy a sound one at whatever their value is to a sane person, well under a monkey, de-LHD the bucket and weld on the nose from a Chevette to create a fake Chevanne, then participate in the OMG old school Ford experience anonymously and free of both wankery and bullshit.

Maltese cars are already RHD.

The complete metal dashes are very desirable now and I sold one of mine for £400 and it only took ten minutes with the still saw to remove, it's the one panel you can't buy,

Because British Empire... They also are well aware of the value of rear-wheel-drive Escorts.

It was rotten like a pear.

If you had weeks to prepare and days to dismantle it then you could probably have got a few more bits, but you saved quite a lot, so I say good job and enjoy the profit!

Just a thought, but there's a mention in there of these sometimes having a 4.4:1 diff.  That must have been fun on the motorway, I don't think!

Just imagine the noise.

Yes I was well aware from the pics it was rotten , not haveing a dig just pointing out when it comes to mk1-2 escorts that doesn't hold them back on the breaking front.

About 18months back fetched a 4dr in a similar state for a mate most of the shell was in a similar state had no eng or rad.

But from memory he sold the roof (mk2 are same on 2 & 4dr unlike mk1 which are different)for £200 on the way back it was only an hour away.

Within the week the rear shelf for £50 & metal dash for £200.

Both axles where saved as was prop box was unknown so scrapped, full loom all the clips etc from the rotten doors sorted/ stored same for the external trims (it was a gl),column, pedal box, servo & mount, heats box, even the rear exhaust mount as cut off to be heated & unbolted.

It had been set in a garden since the 90s he gave £50 for it bloke was over them moon as nobody would come for it never mind pay for it as it was so rotten.

When these cars go to be wieghed in there lucky to be vaguely a shell.

A fully laden 1100 van need that diff to manage to achieve 60 on a motorway.

A Transit recovery van did attempt a rescue but due to the boggy ground conditions and the Escort’s terminally corroded shell, the salvage was aborted. The scrapman advised that the only way he can take the vehicles off site is if they are cut up and the bits are dragged towards the entrance. The Daf wasn’t rotten but it was parked about 25m further down the back of the garden where ground conditions were even worse.

I have it on good authority that the recovery driver broke the front grille whilst attempting to drag the Escort sideways by rope. Bummer.

I should also have mentioned that the action was taking place 25 miles from my house, access was only granted for as long as the cutting crew needed to cut up the cars and I had to get home to get ready for a friend’s birthday party which was so posh that the birthday girl flew Grandmaster Flash on her private jet from New York to DJ. I am sure that I was the only person at the gig who spent time that day rummaging through an old Escort van and salvaging junk.

Good work, but to be truly outstanding you should have turned up in a grimy boilersuit, then proceeded to approach the fittest bird around and (in your best mock west country accent) asked her whether you were at the right address for the Stationary Engine Enthusiasts' Annual Ball ?

My son goes to a private school in Gerrards Cross hence we rub shoulders with some very rich people.

Here’s the great man himself, the legend, Grandmaster Flash. He got paid all expenses (inc a ride on our friend’s private jet from New York and back) and £70k for 90 minutes behind the decks.

^ I bet he's never rolled up to a gig after getting dirty with an Escort van. £70k for making some shapes and playing some modern music. I've got it all so wrong.

Looks like you did a sterling job to make sure not everything went into the fragger, under some extremely trying conditions. At least some bits of this sorry van may live on! With unlimited time, hard standing, heated workshop, Swedish masseuse etc then I'm sure more could have been filleted, but under the circumstances that's a damn good haul. And Grandmaster Flash later! Sweet. From wheels of rust to wheels of steel...

Personally I would have gone for Flava Flav. Cheaper and always knows the time
