Xud engine, small annoyance.

As some will know I have a 305 (wow?) van and it has an Xud dizzle go thing. In the last month or so its developed  a tick over annoyance. Before this annoyance I could, heater plugs, turn key, no accelerator, and it would start and tick over easy. Even though it sounds like a tractor. I like tractors anyway coz they tend to last longer. (tite scot)

Now, I have to give it a bit of gas for 15/20 seconds and then it will tick over, but it sounds as though its liable to conk out. It doesn't, but it doesn't sound right or feel right. Lumpy.

Over to you, fine gentlemen of the beige. Or is it braaaan?

Sounds like it might be letting air in to the fuel lines when it's stood?

My first thought too, I had similar on a Tdi Disco years ago.

My XUD was doing the same thing. The revs would jump up and down and it sounded like it would cut out. If you held the revs up for a bit it would settle down.

Problem, as above, was air getting into the fuel lines. Via the filter housing in my case. I fitted a BMW inline diesel filter as made famous by AS, bypassing the housing, and all is well.

Its only stood over night and after I go to work, eight hours, it starts Ok.

Lucky I haven't got much work this week, coz of some dickhead saying he didn't want it all the work done NOW, so I'll check the air thing out. Don't know where the italics came from, so help in how to get rid would be appreciated. I is shite wiv tek.

Air can get into the system in about the time it takes for the engine to cool down. The obvious places to check are filter housing, fuel pipework and injectors. I'm not sure if the 305 will have the slightly pointless fuel heater on the back of the engine, but it's a common air ingress point and can be bypassed easily if you can get to it.

CTRL+I turns italics on and off.

Is the thermal unit that pulls on the control cable connected to the injection pump operating OK? I Think this operates an advance/retard on the pump..?

Isn't the thermostatic cold start device just for increasing idle? Maybe on old XUDs it does alter the timing.

If you can replace some sections of black fuel supply lines with clear pipes (using new Jubilee clips), and/or add in a couple clear in-line disposable fuel filters, you would see any air bubbles, and it would be so much easier than guess-work to narrow down where air is being pulled in. (I agree, that's what your symptoms sound like.)

Don't assume that dizzle will be leaking out where air comes in. It rarely does, it's under vacuum.

Bloody hell!! questions n stuff. Krujoe. I have clear pipe from filter to injector pump and I don't see any air in it.

Cleon. I'm pretty sure there is no pointless fuel heater. I mean its a 94 Xantia lump. What would be pointless with it?

Ta, Myglaren for the italics update. I would like to say that personally I love Italians and all they stand for.

Squirrel, good point and when it isn't raining, hopefully some time this week I'll check it out.

Lacquer Peel, I'm sorry about your affliction but it does happen to old chod, but I'll take your advice on board and put various systems in place to meet the challenge moving forward to meet the needs of the xud experience.

Thanks all.

Same issue on an XU9D ZX many moons ago - traced to perished fuel pipes under the pump letting air in.

The fuel heater uses coolant to warm the fuel, so only works when the engine's warm (when the fuel doesn't really need heating) and nobody ever seems to notice a difference when it's bypassed. It's common for it to fail and start allowing air into the fuel system and it's not cheap or easy to replace.

I reckon if it's a Xantia block it will probably have one fitted as 405s and BXs had them.

I've had a rummage, between rain, and I reckon you is rite bro, but what I did find was the tensioner on the cable had unwound itself. So with suitable adjustment it is now purring like a well tuned tractor.

I love a simple fix. Thanks chaps.
