I want my money back !!!

All Vauxhalls are shit !!!

So I spent £204 on 2 rear tyres and a aircon re-gas and it rewards me by not failing to proceed.

I came across the Derby Dales towards Buxton (as my sat nav was telling me the A50 was closed which was probably wrong. As I bypassed Buxton past Harper Hill, I noticed the brakes were a bit spongy. I decided I needed fuel, so I thought, I'd fill up before I went over the Cat and Fiddle pass. Good job too, because when I stopped at the petrol station there was smoke coming off the drivers side rear brake. And fluid all over the inside of the wheel.

Obviously RAC were as stupid as ever.  I explain the problem. I explain that a man in a van will be no good, as he's not going to fix it, and just send a transporter. An hour later the man in the van arrives to say a transporter is on it's way, (Of course it is mate)

So I phone RAC at 6:30pm,

Man in Van arrives at 7:30 (Yeah)

Transporter arrives at 8:50

Transporter drops me off at 10:40

Now WHY has my MV6 NOT got vented discs at rear. Has it got the wrong calipers or the wrong discs ?

Anyone here know anything about Omega brakes ? Omegod to the bat phone !!!

Not being a believer in coincidence, I'd be wondering if the tyre monkeys did something...

I watched them fit them because trust issues.

I can't think of any normal car with vented rear brakes. Old hoses failed?

Posted

So anyone know how to tell what discs my calipers are designed for ? I reckon if I knew the inside width dimesions it should be I could measure it.

Wait.

Solid discs supposed to be 12 mm thick (HBOL)

Pads are 17 mm when new (HBOL) - I assume same thickness for vented ? Haynes does not have details for later cars GRRR

Vented discs are 20 mm thick (Euro car parts)

Therefore the gap for Vented needs to be at least 54 mm and the Gap for Solid needs to be at least 46 mm but nowhere near 54mm - I will go and measure in a minute.

According to Omega Owners forum, the 3.2 has or should have vented rear discs.

Question then is "Is seal kit interchangeable ?"

Right ho. I've been out and had a good look. DEFINATELY the Calipers are designed for a vented disc and the pad on one side has got jammed between disc and caliper, causing the heat, and cooking. and the piston has come out past the seals.

The opposing piston is fine as they designed it so that half the caliper is the same as the solid set up.

It might be that I can get away without new seals. There is a 42 on the caliper which I think refers to the piston diameter?

Posted

Chances are you can just pop the piston back into place & bleed it up again. Plus fit some vented discs of course.

I had similar with both rear callipers on a W124 due to the discs being worn so thin. That was fun as the brakes hit the floor when late braking for a 30mph bend between stone walls from 80+... You can swedish flick an E-class & hold it sideways far enough to make the bend at that speed, I'm NOT doing it again though!

Should have got the tyres at Krap Fit.

They would have noticed the pads, and the shockers, and........ and...........

Feck me. How hard is it to get parts for a 16 year old Vauxhall.

Euro Car Parts are providing pads and discs to arrive next Thursday as NOT stocked in store, which is £100 cheaper than Main dealers trade club price, except - oh we can't get the pads, but if you come in and pay for the discs we might get them by a week next Wednesday. maybe.

Biggred are providing pins and seal kits - although I think I might not need that, and I'll be putting it in my box of stuff in case something goes wrong in future.

Shit I need to order brake fluid too. Ah well.

Blimey, Autobahnstormers, are they still going?

A bloke called Charlie came to my house and adjusted the tappets on one of my Royales many, many years ago.

Big scandal involving him I think, but I found him a really nice bloke.

Omegod here, someones obviously fucked up or been a mingebag in the past and fitted the wrong discs, I'd gamble with fitting some solid disc calipers as the rear brakes do near fuck all, I've got a few sets here

Not sure on the omega but in some older VAGSHITE the calipers are the same for vented and solid discs, just the pads are thicker for solid discs.

As I sadly discovered, annoyingly bloody hard. Computer says, NLA!

To be fair, I'd have to contact my insurance to explain why I'd modified my car, so I don't really want to do that.

I was expecting the new discs and pads from Euro Car parts to be delivered Thursday, but they came this morning. Padgid and Brembro repectively and on  Saturdayy Biggred delivered the seal kit and pin and spring kit.

I'd already checked that once I got the piston back into place there was no leakage, so no need for the seal kit.

So The first big headache was getting the handbrake adjuster to adjust (who designed that shit idea ?) to allow the disc to be removed.

New disc is a bit thicker post-17612-0-98629900-1503929479_thumb.jpg

Then The Pins WERE definitely wrong.  post-17612-0-60768000-1503929418_thumb.jpg

As were the spring clips

So I had to use the old parts GRR.

But then I couldn't get it to go back together.  Could I get the pins to line up straight.

Eventually I worked out that the Brembo pads had slots which were about 0.75mm too far one way, so I was forced to get a round needle file out and fettle them. Once that was done, It all went back together right. I bleed that side, adjusted as bext I could the hand brake through the little hole in the disc and then moved onto the other side. I got it all back together but realised that I hadn't taken enough off the the slots so one side was binding, so out with the discs and a bit more fettling. Then bleed that side.

That was quicker and then I went out for a drive.

Seems fine. Handbrake is a bot high for my liking, but I'll let it bed in and have another adjustment next week.

Now to return incorrect parts.

At one point thought that If I were struggling to get a vented disc, (Or if I were very skint) I'd use the solid one disc, but use the old pad backplate as a shim behind it.

I am wondering if I could contact ATE direct and explain that they need to make a small batch of pins and spring clips and sell them to a club (or me)

Those adjusters are a bit of a bugger aren't they? I had to do rear disks on a Carlton & I bet the are the same.

Posted

The mingebag who fucked up was partly me. Due to assuming that the previous maintenance was correct. When I ordeedr the rear discs and pads last year, and saw two versions I just took a look through the wheel, saw a solid disc was fitted and ordered one of them.

I then ran out of time to do the job and paid a mobile mechanic to do it for me, and he obviously didn't clock that they were wrong.

The moral of the story is DO not assume because to do so will make an ASS of U and ME !!!

The Saga of the pins and clips continues.

I sent pictures of the correct parts next to a ruler, to various parts suppliers, including US GM parts specialists (It's a Cadillac Catera out there) BUT autovaux say they've had their supplier measure the pins and clips which correspond to the now obsolete GM part number, and they have them right and in stock.

I have therefore ordered them, but am convinced that they will be wrong when they arrive.

Posted

Parts arrived direct from 2 different suppliers of Autovaux.

One tip here is that the little split springs which sit at one end of the pins, don't have enough of lead in, and so rather than struggle, a slight squeeze with pliers, shuts them just enough for the lead in to allow then to be fitted with a gentle hammer tap.

Also the Brembro pads needed MORE of a fettle. I assembled it all without the spring clips, with the pistons pushed right back and checked how free they were. Not very.

So more time with a needle file to elongate the slots just a little.

Then reassemble with new spring clips.

Then tried to get the hand brake better. It's better but not convinced that it will pass the mot like it is.  Which is coming up.

Then I changed the oil. 5W-30 DEXOS2 - GM's finest fully synthetic and a genuine GM filter. I got oil all over my face and glasses, taking the filter out. Nice.

I emailed ATE customer service and have not had a response at all. Wankers.

just be careful buying razor blades , my old Vauxheap went into the separator and might want to get back at me somehow  !!

I keep watching this and pretend its my Vauxheap  , stroking the pussy and saying " meet your end Mr Bond !"

I always used 10/40 semi skimmed in my migs, good job on the brakes !

I probably would too if it were a 2.5 or 3.0, but Trade Club Price on Fully Synesthetic if you buy 4 x 5 litres given that I'll use some of that in the BINI, is works out not much more than 2 x 5 semi and 2 x 5 fully
