Terracan Experiences?

Anybody here got a Hyundai Terracan or any experience of one?

Russ Smith did a Practical Caravan review and seemed to rave about them to a point he appeared to be about to buy one.

So far I've worked out:

1. Rear LSD needs special oil and seems to have taken Hyundai dealers a few replacement diffs to understand over the years

2. Delphi injectors are very sensitive to rubbish fuel so need good and regular filter changes

3. Injection pumps as above

4. Standard dampers are rubbish but Bilsteins seems to improve the otherwise soggy handling.

5. 60k seems about time for a clutch and DMF on the manuals (which I 'think' I'd prefer)

Otherwise, the merc derived 4cyl diesel is pretty bulletproof, fairly comfy, 163bhp, 30mpg and its otherwise a mk2 shogun with a bit more sound proofing.

Parts from Korea seem cheap with sensible price shipping, a set of 4 genuine injectors can be had for £299.

love them..they have an old school feeling or "robustness"  I have had a fair few and continue to buy them when i get the chance.  They go really well and offer a nice soft rolly ride . They do feel just like a 90s shogun. The Sorrento is the other one I like. They handle a lot better (more car like) but are stotty at the back ( good for hauling heavy stuff)

of the two I prefer the Terracn as it feels like a tacky attempt at fancy shogun, the worst fake wood ever!:)

Horsey people along the road have one. They have had it over 10 years so they must be ok. I had a 54 Santa Fe that was good until it ate two transfer boxes.

I don't think the diesel is Mercedes derived, you might be confusing Hyundai's 4x4s with Ssangyong.

What you need is a BX TZD Turbo Estate

Oh... Wait....

Seems there's a lot of mythology out there about these having Mercedes power, but it would further seem that they definitely do not.

Not Merc

It's the SsangYong Rexton that has Merc power, they have licence built OM series diesels. Whole car is based on the ML in fact.

No real bad news here then? Possibly a good thing the engine isn't Mercedes derived then  :-D

I don't think the latter is true, they share a lot with the Musso which wasn't based on anything Mercedes.

Boss had one so I asked....

Bosses reply:
Yep I had a Terracan, for about 6 months. As refined as a tank. Plenty of guts but Christ it was noisy and I think only a 3 speed automatic, which was useless. All in, shite. Wouldn't want another

One of my workmates had one from new, no trouble that i'm aware of.

I sold some almost new tyres off me Hilux that happened to be same size as Terracan, bloke who bought them had done over 150k in his and it was still in makers warranty, hard working miles too not an undamaged panel or bumper on the motor, but he reckoned the only things that had gone wrong was a couple of bits of interior trim broke and the rear axle sprung an oil leak, all fixed under warranty, he was justifiably well chuffed with it.

For some reason i was under the impression the engine was a 2.9 V6, where the hell i got that notion buggered if i know.

I've considered one a number of times so I can build up a matching fleet, but the ones for sale gave the impression that maintenance had been skimped on...

I probably would if one came up which had been pampered, instead of the green Discovery perhaps?

Surely not - are you thinking of the same car?

One of my customers had one and it was a heap of shit. The head cracked and it would overheat going up hills. The back axle actually rotted through by the shock mounts which along with the overheating killed it off.

I had a look at a Terror Can. It was dreadful, as well as might be expected given the antique it was based on, with added Korea thrown in the mix. I also had a look at a Galloper, which was even worse. I ended buying a Musso which FTPd outside the sellers house so he gave me my money back, so I went and bought a Clio 172 instead.

I reckon its perfect. I'm bloody annoyed that i'll have to do a B+E trailer test now.
