Can you tax a car using green slip straightaway?

A friend if mine is looking at buying a car today, private sale. The car is sorn. She can sort the insurance over the phone. Will she also be able to tax it there and then? I've been trying to find out but can't find any definite information online. I'm quite confused by the new online system.

Yes, you can enter the document ref number off the green slip - the V5C/2

Pay online

You can tax your vehicle online if you have:

  • the 11 digit reference number from your V5C (if you’re the current keeper)
  • the 12 digit reference number from the V5C/2 (if you’re the new keeper and don’t have a V5C in your name)

Do it online via the reference. I did it yesterday myself.

Only problem she might have using the online system is if it doesn't show as insured. If it's currently insured and MOT'd it should be fine but if it's not been insured recently, it may not show up on the database straight away.

Online doesn't check for insurance or MOT, because it can take up to 14 days for insurance to show. It used to check for MOT (as that's instant, as anyone refreshing the page to see if their car passes or not will tell you!) but they don't even do that now.

Not sure if you take the form into a post office whether they still ask for the insurance certificate...

No they don't. They haven't for a long time.

However...if the green slip has previously been used to tax a vehicle, the (DVLA) web site will reject it. You then have to go to a Post Office (with slip) and tax it there. You can still set up DD payments at the PO, though.

Did it yesterday here too. Not all sellers are aware yet, but we did the keeper change online too at the same time; last time I did that was on a Monday evening (just before the 7pm cut off) and the new v5 arrived in the post on Thursday. 10/10 etc

Morning - I've used the same V5C2 to tax a car twice (I can't find the V5C I should have been sent when I purchased it) It worked ok -fluke I dunno but useful. Only tip it doesn't tax it from the end of the month like the V5C but from the moment u use it (as it detects you as a new owner) - so I 'lost' a month because of taxing on the last day of the previous month. I surmise that they have tried to make all this easier because we have a clamping epidemic where I live and anything to avoid that is welcome.

Oh and doing the change of keeper online is excellent as it avoids the previous owner forgetting to send the log book off

Just as a note for those across the Irish Sea: despite having everything now centralised in Swansea, cars registered in Northern Ireland still can't be taxed online - for reasons best known to themselves, the green slip (V5C2NI) only has an eleven digit document reference number, not the twelve digit one needed to complete the online form (this is despite the government's NIDirect webpage directing NI residents to the DVLA page). Instead, tax needs to be bought through a main Post Office, AND printed insurance documentation is also required (emailed doc on a phone screen is no good). I bought a car off SORN the other week and it took four days before I'd all the paperwork together and could get the tax sorted. Bit of a ball-ache really, though at least it only took two minutes in the Post Office - no forms to fill in, they just scanned the barcode on the green slip, checked the MOT and insurance printouts and took payment.

ive had a scenario, where the green slip wont work online if the vehicles been sorned in the last 5 days

She bought it at 6pm and it was taxed at 7.45pm so sounds like it worked. It's a 2011 A4 2.0tdi so too modern for here. Cost £5k as highish mileage for it's age of just shy of 150k and only part service history. I must say it seems ok for the money. I wouldn't be put off by that mileage. My sharan's on 208k.

My Aldi A4 that I've recently acquired is on 160k but it's a year older. Like you say, they hide their wear well. Just have to be prepared for the usual VAG sensor and valve shit, as you've discovered already on yours. Given they're on very long life oil changes, I'm not sure I'd get one without me knowing it's been regularly serviced.

I'm no VAG fan, but they are very competent cars. The bone shaking ride of the S-Line setup is a bit uncomfortable though. Despite being a lowly 143bhp diesel, it sports the same discs and size wheels as the S4 and S5. Which, frankly, is ridiculous and only causes running costs to go up.

We've thrown a personal plate on it, which really does hide the age well. I'd imagine in most people's eyes it looks only a few years old. It keeps the wife happy though, which is the important thing.

Has it had or not had the emissions fix done? Unfortunately mine has had it. :(

It's a technik model designed to appeal to company car drivers I think, extra leather and sat nav. It's an SE so not too firm riding and without the other trinkets. Has 170 bhp and she says it flies. Her car previous to this was a 2000 156 2.4 10v but she pulled onto the pavement and cracked the sump and then carried on driving until the oil light cane on = instant death. Shame as it served her well.
