ashes to ashes - wagon hybrid

What was going on with the Leyland Daf 45 panel wagon with a Renault badge tacked on at the start of Ashes to Ashes last night? This unholy union was supposed to represent a French registered lorry in a mildly humourous skit involving the unofficial extradition of a ne'er do well by our heros in blue. The problem is that the subterfuge was so badly done. They blacked out the Leyland Daf badges and stuck a cardboard diamond on the grille. And that was it. At least the "driver" was on the right (left) side! Are there any early 80's Renault lorries left in the UK that the BBC could have used?

Actually no, we looked! Or at least didn't find one in the time we had. Even thought of temp mocking up one of our Mk2s..... :shock:Did you notice me lovely amby?

I noticed the ambulance and told my girlfriend I sort of 'know' the owner  Then she got the idea that my Isuzu might make us some money doing film work... err.

Can't say I was paying that much attention to be honest.

I thought it was a Leyland Daf but didn't know for sure - or care to be honest! All this bollox about Drake trying to 'get back' to 'Molly', particularly with this new Martin twat and 'Project Rose', is really ruining it now. FFS, we just want Gene Hunt and 80s tunes, not a load of time travel crap - I'd watch Doctor Who if I wanted that. There's not enough storyline left to justify 8 episodes in this second series. P.S. I hope that brown Dolomite that gets crushed in the next episode was a shitter and not mint like the red Princess. The BBC is getting through more classics than a decades worth of classic banger races at the moment.I notice the 1960s Newcastle George Gently thing manages use of old cars well without wrecking them. Hopefully this is the way forward.

Does anyone click the red button at the end for the 80's singalong??

I actually copped out of that one, they originally wanted grannies or even capris. I believe there is at least one of the three of the dollies left that they bought for the stunt. As far as I know they were all good cars. TBH I am no more happy with it than you are, but a job's a job......

By coincidence I just came on her to post about George Gently  The stories are pretty good but it's another show that makes a total cock up of the period detailing with regard to cars. Last week we had out of work immigrant ne'er do wells driving round in a brand new Vauxhall VX 4/90 - what's that all about? And in the last series he was trying to flog his MGB which was supposedly clapped out and worth £175 yet the B had only just come out at the time it's set!Damn, it's hard work being a pedant!

Well considering these days they drive Range Rover Sport's, maybe it's not so inaccurate?

Could've gone for a Renault Midliner, which was made until quite recently and can still be found in commercial use.....

As this actually has the same cab as found on Saviem trucks built in the 1970's!

Interesting, the left hand drive bit didn't help though. Flipping the image would not have helped as the Audi was in shot at the same time.As for getting period vehicles right, it's a constant problem. Some art directors get a set idea in their minds, and pluck a car they know out of the air cos they want a particular look. I have a Mk2 transit minibus out at the moment, it was bought with a Mk1 interior on the understanding we would fit bench crewbus seats. The bus is 1984 and I was told the segment of the film is 1988, so it would have been 3/4 years old when it's set. When the director (American) clapped eyes on the bus as is, he liked the seats and shot it as is. WTF?? Who in their right minds would pay 10 grand for something then rip out the seats in favour of some that would be 10 years old?The thing is, viewers will watch it and say 'oh that's a tatty minibus, you think they could have got one that looked new', and not know the background!I am also working with a Mk3 cortina on a short film, which is in effect two scenes to be pitched for a full feature. We were originally contacted by the director for a car that would have been a cheap second hand car in about 1984. The original idea was a Mk2 escort, which would have only been a few years old and current then, given the character is a nurse a Mk2 escort would be too much money, and the practicalities of doing a shoot with dialogue in a smaller four door car just wouldn't work. So they went for my suggestion, a Mk3 cortina that would have been 12 in 1984, something you could have bought cash after saving for a bit, as opposed to a nearly new used car off a car lot that might have needed finance. It was a joy to be listed to, and made a pleasant change!

I saw this a week or two ago, first car in shot was a Triumph 2000 police car, but it was A registration. Didn't they come out in 1965? If I was being an anorak I'd mention the number plates don't look very real either, are they using the wrong font or spacing?I sold my Land Rover last night to a film production company, they want it for a film called London Boulevard which is being shot soon. The car went for its screen test 2 weeks ago and they liked it except for the colour, green is apparently better than Limestone. A quick look around for a Stage 1 Land Rover Safari in green drew a blank so they bought mine and are going to paint it. Saves me worrying about the patchy paint at least :D

Damn, it's hard work being a pedant!

I did notice that, I was just happy they didn't wreck any cars given Heartbeat's record in this. The MGB is also in a distinctly non period metallic blue.

I like the show otherwise - they are historically accurate in the social history - i.e. the fact that the contraceptive pill was only officially available to married women for most of the 1960s and a doctor was breaking the law by giving it to a single woman was referenced in a recent story line. That's the sort of detail that many shows and films miss.

But the real inaccuracy in that show is that there is no way in 1964 that a detective constable (or whatever rank the younger one is) would be allowed to have a beatles 'moptop' hairstyle. He would be marched down to the barber and given a good short back and sides!

Think it came out at the same time as the Rover 2000, so an 63 'A' reg is possible, although very unlikely.

That's right, the Triumph press cars were along the lines of 1234 KV but most early ones I've seen are B-reg accounting for the fact that many authorities didn't issue A-plates anyway because they were using up their pre-suffix quotas.

Am I one of the few people here who despite the old cars, cant get past the half arsed trying to be funny and serious at the sametime script in Ashes for Ashes? Nevermind the crap camera shots (direction?)?Admittedly I've not seen many at all, but it just makes me cringe after watching for a few mins.

Originality is not necessarily foremost in the directors mind.In the series Looking after Jo Jo set in Edinburgh in 1982 they wanted a new BMW so asked me to provide my 323i.The only problem was the E30 wasn't launched in the UK until 1983. Didn't bother the "luvvies" though.

Ah well, I'm not worried when I make my pet project private dick story at all. In fact it'll have anachronisms everywhere, like a PI in the sixties wearing an early digital watch and using a palm pilot to document crime scenes. Also, the bad guys have an Isuzu Piazza. And it's 1967. His secretary drives a 1978 Celeste and his fence down the cab rank has a Citroen C4 and a massive collection of 'legit' taxi cabs.Half of the script will consist of obscure references to whatever the fuck I feel like and the cameraman did it. PWWWAHHHHHHHHHHHH.'Want some rescue remedy guv?''Fuck off Jones, I've just been shot, turn the bloody lights on, I'm sick of this black and white bollocks'etc.
