Speeding was not a problem the last time I visited the Alps.

Nor me.

Also remember the headlight stickers,

LOL, I was the only one in the whole ferry queue who had bothered. British or foreign. I did near 3000 miles in 10 days "over there",getting back on Friday and I miss it already- driving abroad is so much more nice than here..even the roadworks were a pleasure. Services (except Belgium) were very nice and filling up the tank in Luxembourg made me happy. It's the ***** 1000 mile round trip to Dover that ***** me off.

Same here - not one else bothered with headlamps. It's part of the holiday for me!

1092 for me and I'm going in two weeks. It's definitely the worst part of the trip, especially the home leg.

Just got this EU travel kit from Tesco. It was reduced to clear at £18 which seems reasonable.

Does anyone know if you can you get fined if you don't use the headlight beam things?

Posted

Yes. You can. But not likely unless you get stopped by Le bored flic for something else. Mainly speeding.

Jesus f Christ has this place been taken over by mumsnet?

I may be from Jaywick, may have a bendy lorry licence and ADR class1, may have worked for a frog company for 15 years but but butt if your life consists of posting  ^^^^^  then I'm going back to talking to sheep.

Might be teaching Granny to suck eggs, but make sure its in the cabin, rather than the boot.

You have to have the hi-vis to hand without needing to step out of the car, AIUI.

Yeah I was going to put it behind the passenger seat. I already have a hi-vis vest that I am going to take as well to save having to mess up the nicely packed ones in the kit lol.

Meh if obeying the law and avoiding the possibility of getting a fine is considered the equivalent of being taken over by mumsnet then so be it.

Assuming your vitriol was directed at myself that is.

LOL, seemingly dashcams and speed camera warnings on Sat nav is a big NON too in places. And DONT use cruise contol in Belgium if it's raining. And carry spare specs in Spain....

Well we got here! Currently in a surprisingly nice budget hotel in Paris. The car made it. Had to have the front windows open as it was very hot today and no aircon so quite a noisy journey but the car went well on the way to Paris sat at 75mph. Pulled out and accelerated to pull past a slower car on an incline and the bloody limp mode kicked in. The funny thing is it still goes quite well in limp mode getting up to 70 downhill and 60 up. Seems more economical too. It doesn't bother me unduly as it's only after a longer run, 330 miles this time.

The main reason I bought this car was for this France trip due to the space in the back for the 3 kids and luggage and on that score it gets 10/10.

Probably a very ignorant question, but do we foresee any issues travelling to France or beyond post brexit? I'm thinking less of physically crossing the border and more with the attitudes towards Britons...

I don't think it will change things that much. People will still travel to France and beyond with brexit or not.

There will be compulsory fitting of beam benders and mandatory MOT checks for all non UK registered vehicles as they roll off the ferry into our beloved isle. This will ensure no riff raff driving shonky old shit or foreign registered wagons with no brakes and bald tyres are allowed to darken our pristine highways.

The extra costs will be paid for my a small levy on food sales from Jeans cafe whilst queuing, a 50€ toilet usage fee will also apply.

Nah nothing will change everybody wants your money.

Do not underestimate the insular french attitudes though

Having done both the tunnel, for me, is by far the fastest, easiest, option, more expensive than the ferry but you pull in from the motorway and pull back out onto a motorway. it takes approx. 30 mins and generally is run very well indeed, apart from when we had a 7 hour delay last year, that was not fun. especially with a fully laden trailer on the back and thousands of cars around. thankfully we found a space to dump the car. much better than the welsh coach load of people who had tickets for the welsh match in paris, they missed the match which was a kick in the balls.

i was there; 7hrs 20 mins due to an immigrant in the tunnel.

They will line the streets and applaud when a car on UK plates drives by.

As they damn well should!

I'm pretty sure people travelled abroad before the EU, I'm sure we'll manage ok afterwards too.

This year, for the first time in my French driving career (22+ years) I'm towing my caravan.

Not only is it a caravan, but its brand new and weighs 1800kg and it tows like a pig on acid.

The tow car?  My trusty* Discovery TD5 which is about to click over 139,000 miles.  It only FTP 2 this year.  WCPGW?

Am I missing something?

We are talking about France- 22 miles from Dover, and not France, Uzbekistan?
