Volvo Six Pot belt changing - new water pump or not?

960's going in for a timing belt change soon but I can't get consensus on whether a new water pump should go in at the same time.

It's the B6304S six pot, by the way.

No idea if your meant to or not but I'd say if your doing the belt (and most of the stripping down etc) then a new water pump at the same time makes perfect sense. I'd just do it personally, saves having to do it all again later.

Probably be daft not to..........and if the belt goes around the pump it would be fucking daft not to!

It does, and those were my thoughts too; specialists be divided, so I thought some of the saner crew on here might be able to say for definite.

done a few belt jobs, had the odd tensioner, but no waterpumps, all down to customers prefence,or its making funny noises,or leaking,

Some say that a new belt tensioned properly on an old water pump can make the bearings go, especially if they're weak to begin with.

Go for the new pump, with the engine stripped down to its knickers it would be rude not to just for another bit of peace of mind, because if that pump decided to fail.......

A stitch in time saves nine etc.

Personally I would get it changed.

My old neighbour didn't change the water pump on his TDi Octavia mk1, the pump failed and took out the cambelt when he was on the motorway, you can guess the rest

Was it your sanderling?

Was it your sanderling?

It was my next door neighbour Paul, bought the Octy mk1 brand new, top of the tree Elegance Tdi in black, was too tight to do proper maintenance on it, just did the cambelt to 'save a few quid', but as these are well known to have cheaply made water pumps, the valves said hello to the pistons, car was scrapped as it needed a new engine, shame really through his own skinflint behaviour it cost him a reasonable car. It is now pretty much standard practice to swap a water pump on any car if it is driven by the cambelt really, preventative maintenance can really be worth it in the long run

After an period of ponderence of an acceptable length, David Bowie Changes.

The Bluebird's water pump looks like it lived in the sea. Replacing is the only option.

The RAV4 I owned last year must have had a shitty aftermarket water pump fitted, as it needed replacing. Still looked like new, but the bearings were toast. I wonder if the pump it replaced might just have soldiered on with no problems? I was bloody luck that pump didn't seize and take out the belt/engine/etc.

So, in conclusion, how's your luck?
