Congratulations and welcome to the parallel universe of R16 ownership.

Since your dislike of manuals matches my dislike of automatics, when are we swapping gearboxes?

Looks a little honey there JM, well bought, and will no doubt be tax free which is a Brucey Bonus

Soooo,let me get this right,

You bought this car in the German equivalent of Linconshire?

I guess by the taillamps and grille that this is quite an early example of the breed?

That old sticker in the back window mentions 1967 by the looks

That sticker was presumably added by the oldtimer-for-rent.de company, who still have it listed on their website as available for hire. I hope they remember to tell their customers about the revised pick up location...

This is all quite amazing, what's the legal* position on driving a non UK registered car once on UK soil though, at least for an Englander?

This fella  may be taking things to far though...

Jealousy... What a lovely car

I have one like that, although less shiny. Maybe this year I shall get it roadworthy...

Rear left window just did a Renault.

There's a knack to doing Renner windows Mr J. This bloke knows how. Want his number?

So yes, it is a 1967 Renault 16.

Which makes it exactly the model before the one you can get spares for.

And yes, I got it from the German version of Lincolnshire, as Mr Conelrad presumably will be happy to confirm.

It is also the last one with the wheezy 54 PS engine.

In autoshite terms, this should be a clear win.

Now where can I get me a new door switch?

Those photos are also clearly from before it had a shunt at the RH front.

So I called my parents today.

Only my mother was present, my father is on holidays in that America, doing his railway shit.

So I told my mother, that I bought a car and I told her 'guess'.

She said '78 Chevy Caprice.

I said no, Renault 16.

She was laughing her arse off.

Have you taken up smoking Gitanes yet?

I bought me a carton of Gauloises, if that counts, a pack of which was sported in the post of the temporarry GGG HQs,

as the attentive readers of this thread will have noticed.

I was always more a Gauloises man than a Gitanes man, actually smoked only these for decades

and nowadays whenever they are available, i.e. anywhere except the UK.

Gauloises are an acceptable substitute as they sponsored Prost during his extended 'not winning at F1' period.

Today I tried to fill in the eight page long NOVA declaration form, of which seven and three quarter pages are redundant shit

and merely exist to create more waste paper. Since I didn't understand most of the things they were asking, I had to call on Mr Conelrad.

Examples:

Are you bringing the vehicle to the UK for self supply?

Derivative?

Was the vehicle obtained from a business which was unable to reclaim the input VAT on purchase?

WTF?

Just answer no to everything. Or yes.

Well, you have to fill a Stasi archive with something, don't you.

It's worth it for those back lights though.  (As long as you don't break them.)

I have several of those in my spares stash..

Can confirm the boot light switch is working. The light is only on when the sidelights are on. There is supposed to be a rubber block on the tailgate which presses the button, but this no longer presses the button. So the light is on all the time. Photo taken through closed tailgate for proof:

I am going to try cutting one of those Rover P6 fuel tank foam cubes to shape.

I have changed the engine and gearbox oil. For such a simple car, I had expected better access. While nothing was difficult to access, the filter was awkward, the gearbox drain hidden by a non-removable undertray, the sump drain exactly on the car's centre line so it's as far away as possible and even the oil filler is positioned so the bonnet stops you pouring an oil can easily!

The driver's door is locked and we don't have a key. This needs to be rectified for the MOT. I thought I'd just remove the lock barrel and re-jiggle the pins until one of the existing keys worked, but, naturally, one of the screws I need to remove is seized solid. I believe only the driver's door lock is original, the rest seem to be a selection of later locks.

The wipers still only have one speed, because I'm not clever enough to decipher the wiring diagram. It does not appear to have a key either.

Well, that at least says there should be three wires going into the switch, and there are three wires going into the switch.

post-17021-0-26198500-1496949872_thumb.jpg

One is 12v, one makes the wipers wipe, and the third, when disconnected, disables self park. The 1968+ wiring diagram shows five wires going into the same switch, so I think this car only has one speed wipers, but the two position switch from a later car.

Now, to finish off this post, I have re-flapped the flapper!
