Haven't done a scrapyard trawl for years, so had the first day in months free today. All the ones left on the Wirral are uninterestingly crap now - I got told 90's cars were too old for them to keep in. :(

Went down to Wrexham which has a more liberated view on cars - one was a typical sludgefest with cars piled high with a crane lifting cars over your head, and I gladly bonked my head on a Mondeo's exhaust pipe and perilously climbed a muddy embankment to look in a Saab. I paid a fraction for my stuff and the staff were friendly as well.

The other (next door) had an unbelievably huge yard (biggest I've seen) with everything arranged by marque and model. Hidden in the outskirts was a load of old crap including these:

Heading back up there to finish my salvage mission and will get more pics. :) Not found 'that' Wrexham scrapyard yet, but will have a hunt for it tomorrow (if it's open).

Hey station, didnt realise these were your photos, I did comment on this photo. Shame the pic is so blurry, I wouldnt have minded seeing the reg to see what it was. Jusging by the alloys it looks to be an early 825 Sterling. Have you seen this car since?

Posted

I haven't, BUT there was a blue Sterling (exactly the same model) in the yard I was in today. It had leather seats and was pretty much intact apart from windscreen. :)

As I'm going down tomorrow I can check if you need anything??

Shame about the Delta doesn't look in too bad a shape really, I miss mine, regret selling it.

Are you talking about David Kelly's Yard? If so as far as I know a a lot of the good stuff has gone because the environment agency made them get rid of all the cars surrounded by vegetation last year.

Have a couple of photos from before stuff was destroyed.

M56 near my works?

Posted

Close, it's the M53. So crap it turns into an A road half way through.

I was lying about that Sterling, it was missing all the things you requested apart from the trip computer and the steering wheel!

Also found David Kelly's scrapyard. He was friendly as expected and I've never seen so many Jaguar XJS's in one place, and also those Renault 15's. Respex to the guy keeping so much of this stuff, it's obviously not for financial reasons. There must be about 20 - 30 XJS's alone in that place.

Spotted this today - it was complete, including rank plastic parcel shelf:

Any bits worth grabbing?

Also, fella in garage over the road got this a couple of months ago - garaged since 1986, 40k miles, absolutely spotless - from the same house I bought the Scirocco from!

A 160k mile 1991 Mazda 121/323 (whichever one it is) - it was like new!

Looks like it was scrapped because no longer wanted, no recent fail - godamnit!

Also driven past a few Ligier and Aixam dealers. Odd looking small cars with huge light units from much bigger cars. These are perilsome on the motorway, topping out at 40 - 50.

Best sighting so far is a red mk1 Renault 5 Turbo with the turbine wheels.

^^^^ It's what it says on the rear...

A 1995 Mega Tjaffer 1.1 Cabrio (1124cc, so I guess a PSA TU11 engine?) - I've looked it up and it appears to be AX-derived.

I hate these faceless bureaucrats who shut down or clear old yards that have been there decades. What do they think they're achieving? Most of the oils and shit have leeched into the soil long ago, and nature is obviously thriving. These heartless officious cretins cannot possibly just leave it as a de facto monument.

Being driven up the M6/M42 by an elderly gent today without a hint of retro shite irony.

Does anyone know of it?

What yard is that Astra van in, Dave?

Posted

Jacksons in Deeside, possibly still there, but doubt it, they seem to purge a lot of stuff every six months. It's a really good scrapyard.

Also didn't notice the SERCKS plate.

Posted

The owner is a member of the Simca Talbot Club and seem to recall that he has owned the Solara since 1984. Have seen the car at the last few Club rallies.  A nice original car that is still in daily use.

I snapped this earlier this year.

It's a Porsche 904 Carrera GTS. I don't know how much it's worth but I bet it's six figures.

It sounded amazing and smelt like Red Adair's pants.

It's a replica, but it's still pretty bloody cool (silver paint is a bit non-u on a Porsche rep, though, don't ya think?)

Posted

Is it? I read up on them an it says the replicas even fetch good money.

Btw the Astravan has now gone. Here are some more from the same place though.

Early Cav with beige interior. Someone's had a load of parts off it though.

Celica, this is the best looking one in my worthless opinion.

Earlyish BX, rear end had completely rusted away.
