Yo Beko, are you doing the axle bushes on this? I was up the garage last night so I picked up the extractor tool. Gis a shout if you need it.

Depends how the brakes and this new exciting ignition fault go tbh. They weren't picked up on the mot, which makes it less urgent...

Ill keep you posted via my moans and groans on here!

Limp mode on a diesel usually means Variable Vanes on the turbo are set to max and the revs are limited to not allow the turbo to boost. On a smaller/less powerful engine this means shit performance. As this is a big engine, you'll still have some guts.My suspicion without having read the codes would be a split in the intake somewhere.

Yes- our vectra is still capable of exceeding the legal limit in limp mode but it takes an eternity to get there.

Just changed the rear drivers side caliper. Had to do the pass side too so ended up having both off, removed the rubber slider boots and scraped/chipped off the corrosion underneath so the sliders slid, greased it all up, wound it all back, refitted it. Then amy sat in the drivers seat with Charlie making brum brum noises and I bled both the rears.

Leaving the engine on, whipped both rear wheels on, then went for a drive, fast, slow and lots of braking. Back home, took a brake pill and put the handbrake on... Which went well, so I jacked up the drivers rear wheel which WAS LOCKED SOLID! So a big improvement there.

But, it still doesn't take much to drive off with the handbrake on. But then should it? I imagine my 2.2 us kicking out enough torque even with light throttle that it shouldnt take much... It won't move on tick over, but it creaks forward on about 1.2k revs.

Fuck it, ill get it in for a retest next week, I can't test it any further, bar maybe doing the double pull trick on the handbrake lever tomorrow after a 20 mile drive (I tried that earlier after a mile and nothing happened.)

I think I'm too late for a £10 retest, if so, I'll change the indicator bulb and see if they notice...

O, and the limp mode hasn't activated again yet. Granted I've not hesitated on the m40 again, which is what caused it last time but yesterday I redline the shit out of it a few times with eva who loved it and nothing happened. Will carry on ignoring that for now...

You are training the young one well, Beko-wan...  :)

Lol it nearly caught fire this morning. Felt something was amiss as it wouldnt crawl forward on tickover, and the mpg dropped to 35. Pulled away from a junction and saw a cloud of white smoke so pulled over and the new caliper was billowing out smoke...

Quickly smacked the shit out of it with my jack handle and lump hammer, which sorted that, then it was ok for the rest of the drive...

Handbrake still doesnt seem ace though, I might get that bled again tomorrow night incase I've boiled the fluid or owt, and check it still locks the wheel with the handbrake on. Still doesnt take much to pull away though, and no second pull of the handle does anything.

Really don't want to be stripping the auto handbrake out to fix that though if it is that, I won't have time before the test expires, let alone re-setting anything if it fucks up.

Has anybody ever supercharged a Laguna V6, have balls ever been created so large?

A supercharger wouldn't fit on one. Better off swapping the 2.0t with the Megane 225 which is the same block. That lump can be pretty easily boosted higher to around 275bhp.

If I can't fix this handbrake issue and just sack it off and buy something else you can have mine as a donor car...

What else can I try short of spending actual money on it?

Sounds to me like it needs someone to set the brakes up properly. EPB module failure doesn't* manifest itself like this

*its a Laguna II

The module hasn't failed. The passenger wheel locks on solid, and drags itself along my mums gravel drive with the handbrake applied. Drivers wheel is solid when off the ground and all my petite weight trying to rotate it, but rolls with the car with the hbrake on gravel.

It's almost like the cable is stretched, or not being pulled correctly. The cable moves, the caliper works, it's just not working right on one wheel...

I don't get paid until 2 days after the MOT expires so trying as many free fixes as I can. Someone said unbolt the brake module and slide it across slightly to the duff side and see if it pulls itself back in more, but I don't think that will work as the outer cable will still be the same length and not fit... If it is the cables that's £60 the pair an I need to be very careful to not fuck anything up that will put the handbrake fault light on.

I've started asking about for a friendly tester... just as a last resort plan as if it won't pass it's MOT I need another car to get to work and back whilst I ponder.

Plus, my reluctance to spend money includes:

Thermostat

Dipstick which is a sump off job

oil leak

laguna

laguna auto box

which could all make any money spent useless...I can see why proper shiters have a fleet, so one always has a working car in situations like this.

I'm confident the rear brake recording little or no effort is fixed, it certainly brakes better now, but the handbrake will be a shot in the dark, how much effort do they go to on the MOT? I presume a fair bit, more than 1.2k revs will be on the road... It did also cross my mind that the tester wasn't holding the lever out to keep the handbrake locked on (they certainly didn't mention the dash lighting up and beeping), but I don't want to go in all cocky and ask, and they say they did, and it's still shit...

With the xantia, I just tightened up a nut on either cable and it was job done...

Will be the cable that has stretched - sounds like it isn't pulling on hard enough.

I don't think you have to replace them in pairs.

Cable is £16 on eBay. If you want it then pm me and we can sort something out.

We did the vel satis up on the ramp and it was quite fiddly.

Where are you seeing handbrake cables for £16? Cheapest I can find is £60 the pair.

How tricky will the job be with the back corner of the car hacked up with me lying on the road? A stretched cable sounds plausible. No idea how to do it though?

MOT parking brake efficiency requirement is something like 16%, if it works chuck it in for retest IMO.

Posted

Alternatively: if you are just concerned about the handbrake, will the garage just test that on the rollers quickly for you before putting it in for a "full" retest?

My local let me go on the emissions machine about 3 times when I was trying to get my Subaru through. Easier for them to let you pop it on for <5min than to retest it and have to do the paperwork etc.

That's interesting. It does hold it, just not under much load. I am comparing it to normal manual handbrake with proper adjustment options though.

A few renault forum posts have said to apply the handbrake whilst driving slowly to shock adjust it, not sure I've got the balls for that though...

Ill ask! Good idea, infact the garage did the same for the xantia, didn't even take it inside just probed it and said nope try again and waved me on my way. I'll enquire tomorrow

Pulling the lever when moving will do an emergency stop using the handbrake system. It won't wrench it fully on, it'll do it progressively.

I've just been out for some fuel, and when I got safely parked back at home (so should the worst happen I can just work from home) I tried driving with it on, and it did grab both sides eventually, took a fair blip of the throttle though.

Also, at the pez station, I was waiting for the guy infront of me to come back to his car so I could leave, so I did a few handbrake on, wait, brake down, handbrake on some more and each time the pedal dipped slightly and I'm sure I heard a little buzz from the back.

As long as the caliper doesn't give me more grief tomorrow (I gave it more smacks earlier, it was warm but not hot, hopefully whatever it was is dislodged now), ill see if Amy will help me re bleed the caliper incase I've boiled the fluid then fuck it, ill book it in for a test and see where I stand!

Get it on the brake test and see how far out you are.

These auto calibrate and adapt themselves, so it may take a couple of actuations before it figures it all out again.

Two things this thread as taught me recently...

1) Electronic handbrakes are pointless wank

b ) You can't do handbrake turns with them, making them even wanker

iii) laguna*

*I already knew this

Posted

That's the issue I had, that's for a manual handbrake (oh how I wish I had one...)

Thanks for thinking of me though!

Gotcha. I assumed they were all the same.

Retrofit? Surely can't be too expensive with a bunch of parts from a phase 1 in the scrappy!

Posted

I've seen threads about it whilst furiously googling the frankly unhelpful threads on the renault forum about the electronic handbrake, didn't pay much attention to them though

Posted

I can't believe something as simple as a handbrake can be fucked up so thoroughly by the addition of modern technology.

Posted

All the electronic handbrake box is doing is pulling on some cables. Apart from the motor box, there isn't much different from a manual handbrake.
