Last day of clouting motors at Wimbledon 19/04/17. Caution: Oval chatting

Wasn't going to say a word but following the success* of the Cannock Bangers AS meet from a while ago, and Junkman's recent post on Stan Woods Memorials (whoever he was)

...there is the last ever Wimbledon banger event before they dig it up for a nice new set of overpriced flats

Bought my tickets already (advance only)

I shall be there with another bunch of southerners, likely bemoaning why the motors on the track are shinier and solidier than half of those that bowl up to local shows.  And that it's so grim down south.

(If there is interest) I may post the booked-in running list for your delectation.

(If there is no interest) I shall delete this thread and say no more of it, hiding away in embarassment, with twigs.

Surprising how many banger fans .ex racers .an 2 at least active racers are on here

Posted

I've no problem with racers, my last two cortinas went to racers who later decided they where too good to compete and sold them on.

Drifters and rally slags probaly kill more old cars.

Wow, I'm surprised it's still there, there was talk of it closing down years and years ago.

I like banger racing, used to work with a few and bought and sold stuff from them over the years too.

Shame Wimbledon is shutting its gates. All for a bunch of hideous trumpey flats instead I guess. I'm actually surprised it lasted this long tbh.

A lot of these sorts of places are going now, my local track has now gone in favour of an upcoming solar farm. I know some others have been getting trouble from new residential areas complaining about excess noise etc. You'd think anyone buying a house near a race track would have expected the noise but...

I wonder how many cars have been destroyed at Wimbledon over the years? What was the rarest!?

Only been once to Wimbledon, all I can remember is wooden stands and flowers in the middle of the grass.

Went to Crayford around the same time, that's long gone.

Used to go to Aldershot and Wimbledon for every meet when I was in my early 20s, back in the Austin Cambridge and Rover P5 days not so much now although I do go to our local grass track meet now and again such a shame its being shut down :-( .... post away...

Maybe Milton Keynes could steal it like we did the Footie club.

Never been to Wimbledon Bangers, was that where Harold Shand ended up on that Long Good Friday?

That was at the North London track / dog stadium at Harringay

Apparently they finished the F1 Stocks at 10:30 and then announced on the tannoy that the crowd could stay behind for some filming.  All the food etc facilites were kept open and the filming went on to 2am.  Those were the days, etc.

The bit at the end looks like Aylesbury on a normal Thursday evening.

#513 Stan Woods was a member of the longest standing banger racing team in the UK, The Invaders.

He was always very spectacular and had a big following. Unfortunately he passed away in 2011.

His memorial meeting every year at Stoke is always well attended by drivers and spectators. This year I will be hoping to beat my pathetic total of laps completed last year (5) and hoping not to beat my personal best total of ribs broken (3)

Entirely btw, Sunday 5th of March at 5.30pm the BriSCA F1 Stockcars make a last blast at Wimbo.

Oh, and have I ever told you guys that I shit on fucking football?

Good to see AFC Wimbledon thriving and those shitehawk 'MK Dons' going down the pan.

I don't have a clue what you're on about

The original Wimbledon FC (formerly of Plough Lane) - now reside in Milton Keynes and are now MK Dons. AFC Wimbledon founded by supporters after the orignal club moved

Sorry - are you talking about football or something?

Me too mid to late 80s I spent half my life here and the other half at Atkinsons car breakers in Colliers wood.

Even went out with a lass whose dads flat overlooked that breakers yard, heaven!

All poncy flats now

I know Wimbledon Stadium looks a bit sorry for itself now but the old Plough lane football place about half a mile down the road and was proper dire.

I was in the pits/car-park, when the racing was on a Saturday (so a while ago), the Rochdale Soccerball Team coach pulled up with a confused looking driver.

That must have been a loooooong while ago. Last time I did Wimbledon oval was 1996 and got there early, so had a walk to find a pub for a local pint. Someone told us about the now disused old Wimbledon ground just up the road so I went for a look.

There was an area of the wooden fencing that you could see over, what a sight. The pitch was an orchard, looked like apple trees everywhere (same size anyway) and obviously hadn't been used for years. The old wooden hut supporters club bar was still open for business though.

I had been hoping to get along to Wimbledon one last time before it closes, however I fear that may not happen. I visited a few times in the ‘90s. Pits seemed to be litter-strewn after a lunchtime market/boot sale?

I was there for a race one evening when Spedeworth let their Carlton control car get hijacked by a driver and used in the DD. All planned I’m sure, but a bit unexpected at the time.

There are some good Youtube videos online of 1970s/80s races, probably ex-World of Sport.
