'Goona 2 as a Daily. Tell me it's a GOOD idea.

I'm going to go against the grain here and say don't do it unless you've always got a spare working car you can use at a moment's notice and you're a wizard mechanic with time and undercover premises available.

A few on here have got them but all the owners are at ninja level of ability.  I think all the cars have taken a fair bit of fettling to get useable and if you've got to pay garage rates for diagnosing the problems you'll soon be in the poorhouse.

They seem to be a good drive, but look at your level of determination or boredom to see how you'd cope.  Probably like a girlfriend who's brilliant in bed but a bit needy for the rest of the time.

Having said all that, if you decide to go for it there are people here to call on for help.

I wouldn't disagree with this. However, you might get a better example than an equivalent vw, ford etc and any car at this level will be a leap of faith and you will get a much greater feeling of satisfaction from getting a couple of years out of a £500 laguna. Isn't the autoshite way to buy the unloved rather than the sensible option?

Judging by the number of these in daily use here in BG,I'd say go for it.

I'm amazed how many "unreliable " cars can be found on a daily basis

I've seen more Alfas in the last 8weeks than I have for the last 9 years in the UK....

These are ace looking cars and I don't know why I haven't indulged. I will at some oint I reckon. Just do it.

Go for it! but be careful and try to get a facelift car, plenty out there, just ask before you buy and consider carefully a V6 version.

My uncle and his sons has had a long line of Alfa's over the years of many types + ages and literally none of them have put a foot wrong. Maybe lucky or maybe when you get a bad one, it's really, really bad. Plus completely unsympathetic to any type of neglect.

I went past a local garage today and noticed that they have a Laguna II as what looks like their courtesy car. Even if it's not and they just use it as a hack, the fact they've been brave enough to put their name on it says something....

ITS NOT A TOOMAH

No, it's not a good idea.

Did they do the V6 in manual flavour?

No unfortunately. I believe it was something like they couldn't fit the linkages in to make a manual version. Not sure how true that is, but yeah there is no manual version. However the auto box really does suit it well.

I've seen a fair few Goona 2s for sale with 70-odd thousand miles on the clock. Is there a big service, like the cambelt, due at that point?

Posted

Cambelt is due at 72k miles or 5 years. As noted before, doing it with the dephaser is an involved undertaking which I would imagine any owner worth their salt would be keen to point out to a prospective purchaser.

It's a 3-3.5 hour job according to Autodata. I saved a fair bit of money (£240 plays £400) by sourcing my cambelt kit, dephaser pulley and waterpump from a supplier in Poland, genuine Renault. It was delivered to the garage that fitted it in less than 24 hours, too.

Yeah I've seen that. Decent spec and seems like it could be good value.

Renault Parts Direct quoted about £260 for 'Belt kit, pump and Dephaser pulley. Genuine parts and 48 hr delivery. Is it prudent to change the pulley as a matter of course (like the waterpump)? After faffing around with 80s Nissans and Opel Mantas it's nice just to be able to price-up genuine parts without spending the whole night on the 'net and trying to arrange shipping from SoCal or somewhere absurd like that.

Well on the 1.8/2.0 its not as critical if the dephaser is failing - it just makes an almighty racket like a diesel. There hasn't been any reported failures on the net of a dephaser failing completely. If you're going to have it as a keeper, then I'd get the dephaser done as well. Otherwise its a cambelt job again to replace.

If you want to see a cambelt change on this engine, see domes Clio 182 thread right now. Same engine block and layout, just tuned for many more horses.

Reminds me of the old Nissan 200sx s14 "vvt death rattle". They'd rattle all day long without causing damage.

This is going cheap:

Red, so not desirable colour for most (I quite like it!). Engine noise will put people off too, but that very much could be the dephaser. Also little service history - possibly cash in hand at a local garage by an old boy. Rear bushes are a common thing on all Lagunas - probably the only thing really needs to be done. Again, as said earlier, go genuine.

On the plus side, its povo spec (as you requested! Not even climate control...), phase 2, low miles and going cheap. Interesting that someone did check the cruise control + speed limiter (very useful thing - especially on 50mph limit motorways) box on the spec sheet though! I wouldn't pay more than £250-350 for it mind.

MOT history doesn't look at all bad with that one; it's been on my watch list for a while now. Failed on a rear bush back in 2010 but otherwise just consumables. Good spec and I like the colour, too. Cruise control would be a bonus as I've always fancied it but never had it and I don't mind the smaller wheels either.

Probably work around £1k by the time the belt/pulley kit and the rear bushes were all done, assuming it stays below £300? I know it's utterly fickle but it'd be nice to have with lower mileage, especially if it ends up as a keeper.

Hi,
I've got a Phase 2, 2L 16v Grandtour. On 110k miles and on LPG...

Since I've had it - two years- it has been great, with only one problem- I bought it with a seized AC compressor. Just passed German TÜV (MOT) without problems or even preparing it for the test.

Due to LPG it is very cheap to run, however a bit slow - you need to shift down into fourth gear for overtaking on motorways.

Finished on £230. Looks like someone got a bargain I think.

So you didn't win it?!

I've seen them all go for similar amounts on auctions atm especially with low miles like that one. I saw a very low mileage (which I generally try to avoid as a rule) one go for £450 odd the other day.

No, domestic management won't allow it for a couple of months yet. :(
