Do not buy anything built by Jaguar / Landrover........they're all brilliant..as long as you don't own them......................

As the Australians say......."if you want to into the Outback, buy a Landrover....if you want to come back out again.............buy a Landcruiser."

12k will get an early D3,with 6k left in the bank for if/when the autobox shits itself

And with LandRover recommending that the body and chassis get split just to replace brake lines or the Turbo it all can get very expensive very quickly.....

Early D4's can be bought for within your budget, but they aren't without their own issues.....

What are these late shoguns like? 7 seats and 4wd.

They seem to have been building the same model for 6 million years, so you would of hoped they ironed out the niggles.

I like these, my lad looked into 'em, apparently the bad irregular failure is fuel pump and t'net reckons well over £2k to fix, that alone ruled them out for him.

I was going to get a 3.5V6 SWB petrol for t'mrs from a garage i used to deliver to but obviously LPG a must, nope, Di means LPG is a no no.

A lot better value than an LC, previous model Shoguns Pajeros still knocking about in good nick well over 20 years old, parts likely to be gold plated from the main dealers mind.

Funny you should mention the Australia Colc

A friend ( who has just died as it happens) bought herself a Nissan Patrol after a lot of umming and ahhing about which one to go for.

One of this type.

She never had any issues and it had 400,000KMS 0n the clock.

Mercedes r class r500 4matic. So unloved you might be able to get 2 for your budget.

Nah, don't bother with the 500, too slow.

This is on Autotrader for £19k, give it another year or so and it,l be in budget.

507bhp, 0-60 5 seconds, 11.7mpg Urban. What more do you need in a people carrier?

Off topic, but this GLC I just spotted in Tesco car park appears to have less ground clearance than the cruze parked next to it?

OMG I NEEDS A 4x4.

Trust me - Borwick back roads with the C8 aint happening in that type of weather no matter what the rubber you have on it

Ive been there and tried it.

Besides I want a 4x4. I may only need it once or twice a year, but I wants it.

Posted

Seesh what different does it make of he wants to spend his money on a 4x4?By that order do you really need more than 40bhp, do you really need a radio? No, but it's nice to have it.

I'm not aware of the area but I doubt if it's the Alps exactly.

Its not.

But I still quite fancy a 4x4.

Does it matter? Do you really care if I drive a polar bear murdering YPLAC machine?

The plan is in 2017 to go to one car, so I want something that will do pretty much all the jobs I ask of it.

If he wants a 4x4 fair enough but the reasoning is spurious.

Think I've had enough of white settlers moving to the Highlands, buying soft roaders and getting in the way of my 2wd vehicle. Nothing personal, just another excuse for a rant. I am angry and depressed.

Seven seats?

Just buy a roof box.

Nicely muffles the cries of "are we there yet?".

All very nice. I would have any of them . But if pushed probably the toyota landcruiser. I have seen a nice one not too far from me. I am not sure because most of my driving is a couple of miles here and there, with the only 20 mile one at a weekend when going the caravan. So I know there are no dpf in them but still. Also got to wait till my finances settle after my wife passing away . I know I can't afford two cars . But like nice looking ladies ,there is no harm in looking at them and wishing.

For LC research you have three main forums.

Pradopoint, which is mainly Australian base.

tlocuk.co.uk

landcruiserclub.net

I'm sure i've come across a couple more but can't recall them atm.

Manual 120's, any later in fact, LC, is rare in manual form, the auto box is really lovely to use and seldom gives trouble so the vast majority are auto...arguably manuals seem to be found in lower (better for us with less electronics) spec models but tend to be bought for work duties, including heavy towing, catch 22.

The LC in the pic, the wheels look like they've been refurbed, OE finish is diamond cut and laquered entire front face, the OE finish suffers badly in salt if neglected (all wheels finished like this do) and i've noticed that if the wheels are scabby its usually a sign that the underbody will be equally uncared for...so any vehicle thats had a wheel refurb suggest you investigate thoroughly underbody.

And make sure if its got air suspension that the arse end goes up and down, roughly 20 seconds will see it complete a height shift, normal springs/dampers can be retrofitted but the ride quality if the system is working properly is good so i'd be reluctant to do so.

Maybe its us shiters, but the first place i go is under the motor with a torch, people seem shocked when you do this...but the nice bloke who bought my old Collie did exactly that cos he'd seen some polished turds before too.

Those Shoguns switched to independent rear suspension and suffer from inner tyre wear. Look for loads of camber on the rear wheels (leaning in at the top). Can be adjusted, but usually seized solid.

Same with Nissan Pathfinder.

A jeep grand cherokee. We had an 06 in derv flavor it was a brilliant car.

Nother vote for the Merc R Class.

From my experience a £12k R 164 (Both ML and GL are 164s) is inevitably a very expensive way to sit on the hard shoulder or get annoyed with garage staff. Whereas the R 251 R-Class, which is mechanically virtually the same on 4x4 versions, escapes from the worst of the woes.

A long wheelbase R Class is hideous, but genuinely a fantastic way to travel, and daft quick even in 320D form.

Cheers Mr Bennet - Funny you should say that - when I was looking for a Maverick/Terrano I spent a lot of time under them looking at polished turds

This one had a lovely shiny body with no rusty wings...

Lovely and shiny on top - looked like it had been parked in the Irish Sea underneath.

Seller ( trader) suggested that they "all sounded like that" when I suggested the exhaust might be fooked "because of the diesel taxi engine"

Yep similarly i drove all the way to Harrogate to do a deal on an 04 plate Amazon not three months ago  that was entirely rust free* underneath, had £27k's worth of servicing in its fantastic history waxoyled* blah blah.

I got there at 10am, small time dealer arrived at 10.05, 2 minutes later i'd shoved me hand straight through a rear underbody box section and by 10.10 was on me way home again without so much as opening the doors or bonnet or peering inside, if i'd caught me hand on the bloody great 12" scratch down the nsf wing i'd have taken most of me skin off, i did a non collection thread at the time.

'Waxoyling' comprised of someone, probably him, leaning under the front bumper and a single pass of the aerosol across the front cross member and the front of both lower wishbones.

polished turds indeed, do they think we're all bloody daft

I remember that thread and it slightly put me off the LC.

I'll research some more about the more common rust spots and also the 1KD-FTV donkey issues, last thing I want if luzzing ten grand or so at a car is an engine grenading twelve months later. Id quite like an auto but the wife doesnt like them, she was put off by a Rover we had years ago with a shagged autobox - I keep telling her they wont all be like that, But:Women [rolls eyes]

Thanks for the pointers :)

80-series Landcruiser. Find the best and find a mechanic who knows what he's doing. You'd have to put in some effort to finding it, but it'll still be going when all the more recent stuff has collapsed in an uneconomic mechanical repair bill. Size could be a problem on those small roads, but anything newer and 4x4 and 7 seats isn't going to be much smaller.

Otoh, you'd win the autoshite trophy if you bought an Espace Quadra.

I'm not aware of the area but I doubt if it's the Alps exactly.

Whenever I've been to the Alps, most locals bomb about in 2wd through conditions which would see the UK completely shut down. I live in a valley not unlike the one in the pic above, went past a 4x4 slowly sliding backwards down an icy gradient the other morning. Made a note I should have had winter tyres on by now - I saw the problem and used momentum, luckily it was a straight bit of road.

I can see how problems arise with large modern people-carriers with a featherweight 4 pot engine over the driven wheels (and the wide, low profile tyres), for bigger stuff rwd rules!

This - the Micra never ever had a FTP in snow, and despite people on the local biking group thinking Im a nut job. I'll even ride in snow ( I have winter tyres on the bike too) But something the size of the C8 with its wanky 225 section tyres and all the weight in the back away from the driven wheels its shite in snow.

Duster with 4WD?

Lack of 7 seats sadly ( 6 being the minimum)

The plug in hybrid with electric back axle is about to make an appearance across a range of makes and I reckon they could be very popular. Zippy performance, zero vehicle exhaust emissions when needed, all wheel drive and excellent mpg all combined into a very neat package. For man who needs driven rear wheels and many seats, it'll make sense unless there is pulling of heavy trailers across rivers required.
