Strange how my Tastes have changed, a little.

Some years ago, I was obviously mentally ill, and also a member of www.mk2cav.com.  I owned a C Reg 1.8e Sri Saloon, with close ratio gearbox which had 2 modifications 1) Rear Seat belts - it did not have them fitted as an option when new,  but one was a lap belt and 2 ) mk3 GSi Front discs and Calipers.

It had keep fit windows, no cup holders, a full size spare wheel, decent tyres, a stereo radio cassette - standard in 1985, no sun roof, no airbags, no ABS.

After 2 hours in the drivers seat I could barely walk and that was on standard suspension. But it did have 115bhp, and weighed almost nothing.

Now I am obviously still mentally ill, but now a member of OOF and  have air con, and airbags and an autobox, and a CD, radio cassette, and a spare wheel that is not full size, and 3 proper rear seat belts, and after 5 hours in the drivers seat I can walk. It only has one cup holder though.

If the car is BIG enough. it has 235/45/17

Here's a question. MV6 wheels above or elite wheels below - which look nicer ?

Diesel engine

Manual gearbox

underbonnet labels in German

That sums up 1 of my cars.

Electronic handbrake

Built-in satnav

Touch screens

That sums up another.

I'm with you on your 1986 Rule in many ways, but what about the 405?

Don't you think I'd not rather have a 505?

RE wheel sizes, it is all about proportion. In the same way most Nova's and Corsa's etc looked overwheeled on 17s, modern stuff would be underwheeled if some of you had you way.

I mean FFS loads of the wheels on them are already too small (compared to the designers intention, I'll bet).

Having a handbrake in a LHD position would piss me off, but I suppose I would get used to it.

Gonna get some abuse here but I really don't like a rover v8 ! Think they were prob ok 30 years ago but unless I've been unlucky every one I've seen is fucked .

Not from me - I like a good V8, but not the Rover ones.  After all, if it was that good, why didn't Buick want it?  I think my favourite V8 is the Daimler 250.

Foot operated handbrake such as Merc C180 especially when coupled with a manual gearbox on said 180, a brilliant low mileage rust free example but stop start traffic anywhere that had more than a 1 in 157 gradient felt like I was bloody walking!!

Electric Handbrakes I despise and fear in equal measure.

That's already been mentioned, so have my other one.

Stop-Start.

I just don't trust it.

I think there's less to fear as time goes on with EPBs, you can buy the tool to put them in service mode for next to nothing now anyway. Reliability wise no worse than the incessant caliper fails you get with most modern cars.

Rover V8s were pretty good, back in the day but they got old (like all of us) and the cams wear out rapidly and they then lose performance faster than they once went.  I actually thought they were okay motors but like old 2 smoke, every one I've had in the last 20 years has also been fucked.

Do not like foot operated/electric handbrakes - the Bentley's is both! Fortunately it's an auto so I never need it but it has to be in 'park' before the handbrake will engage, not even neutral FFS.

Speedo and rev counter needles going right round and back on start up.  Because 'sporty'.  It's a Kia diesel ffs.

If I ever buy another car I'd prefer one without disc brakes, power anything, or independent suspension especially the wet sort. Vacuum or engine driven wipers are off the menu and more than 4 cylinders are, for me, a waste of spark plugs unless over 3 litres.

A starting handle and opening windscreen are nice, built in jacking systems, and transverse leaf springs are not.

I also have a pathological dislike for blue interiors.   Knocked back two nice 190Es because of it, there seems to be something horribly institutional about blue plastics that I just could not live with.   One of the Mercs had it with white paint as well......yuck.

The fear of these new fangled catalytic converters is a worry for me, along with fule injection. I'll keep doing 30,000 a year in my Cortina GL which only ever requires a decoke every 6 months and an oil change every other weekend.

I've got the money saved up for when it wants an engine rebuild next year and the welding course I've paid for will pay dividends at over the next few years as I spend thousands keeping the old dear going.

HAHA one of mine does that too.

Driving position. If the pedals don't line up with the steering wheel, then I'm not interested. Possible exception for the Citroen Ami.

Driving position is a very good one! I never understood the hype around sporty Clio's because of this.

I hope the V6 doesn't feel like a 172!

Driving postion is my favourite thing about my MR2. It feels so 'arcadey' with the pedals bang inline and the wheel can be positioned so it is facing vertically.

I have yet to experience a more 'focused' driving position in anything remotely affordable/worth it.

I'm a hypocritical tart.

Once upon a time I said I'd never buy a diesel ( 3 outside at the moment) or an auto ( 6 currently) . I've always despised modern Peugeots and Fiats ( 1 of each) and as for Mercs ( 4 ) , when I had a Xtriple and an S Type Jag I took to using Mike Hawthorn's description , that ultimately got him killed, " Bloody Hun motors" when they were current I slagged off e30s and e34s as Spartan and old fashioned( 1 of each).

At least I don't voiciferously condemn everything post a certain date then drive 2 cars 10 years newer.
