BMW, Mercedes or Audi - £1k cash waiting! - CAR BOUGHT - WITH PICS

If you are happy with what you paid then so be it but a grand and a bit sounds a bit traderish.

Perhaps, but we're talking about beer money so it doesn't really matter. Three months of lease payments for my wife's 4 series amounts to more than what the Ci owes me and I stand a good chance of getting my investment back when the time comes to sell.

I really didn't want to commit my entire weekend, spending hours on the road looking at rusting jalopies. I'm happy with what I've achieved.

You buy cars all wrong. You just keep an eye on WilsonWilson. wait for him to buy something you like, wait a further 3 1/2 days for him to fix all the issues and change the tyres then sell it for less than he paid! Then just pop over and collect.

Apart from the collecting part you dont have to leave your chair!

Actually turns out that my pointless contribution (which was, I agree, pointless) was barely any worthwhile than anybody elses.

Sorry anyway. But well done. Looks like a really nice £1,000, manual car.

I did try to buy via AS (hence this post) but I couldn't work out the collection logistics with the seller of the only car that fitted the bill, which was located in the opposite end of the south east to my manor.

I should take this opportunity to thank everyone who PM'd me with their offers. If I was buying for myself I would have gladly taken custody of some obscure relic but my wife wanted something obvious, German and executive. The quality of the seat fabric was never an issue.

Your contribution made me consider an A4 but I couldn't find a single decent looking example within 25 miles of my postcode.

I did say that I prefer a manual and petrol car but one has to be realistic when buying a cheap old motor, which is why I got very excited when a nice man from this parish offered me an automatic and diesel engined Mercedes!

I certainly won't be wading in with any E46 coupe hate, I get pangs of (mild) jeasoulsy when I see a nice one.

Apart from the fact it's a BMW ( which I don't like 'cos everyone round here has and they all drive like utter twats which makes me dislike the cars 'cos it MUST be the cars fault... right?) that looks really nice. I like big engines, auto boxes, leather and copious amounts of toys so it fits my personal rational just fine.

I agree about wasting time buying cars, so many that are advertised as 'mint' or 'perfect' or whatever are the exact opposite, so if you find something nice that you like but it's a couple of quid over budget... so what? Get it bought and get on with life.

Still wish I hadn't bought the Kia though...

If time is short then a compromise on price / spec / car altogether is fair play.  I've done the buying where you hold out for exactly the right car and it's usually not quick.

If your good lady is happy and the car won't be any trouble, that's a win.

Buying cheap old cars can be a pain nowadays and I really didn't want to commit my entire weekend, spending hours on the road looking at rusting jalopies.

Might not be your kind of forum any more then.

Why's that?  Do we have a quota to fill or something, because I haven't filled out a timesheet before.

So you bought an expensive modern car. Well played.

Come on, how is a 13 year old @£1100 BMW not Autoshite? Nearly three generations out of date and first seen 19 years ago, an E46 is not modern either.

Viewing 13 year old cars is a pain in the arse and some folk (believe it or not) have 'a life', whatever that is. You need a half decent car for not much money, find one, it's not exactly what you want but fuck it, it'll do. Buy it, job done.

We've all had cars viewed by wankers who go away 'to think about it' because although your car is quite clearly advertised as being green 'they really wanted a blue one'.

This thread's gone a bit PH for some reason, no need for it.

Posted

Has it really been 19 years?  That's insane when you think about it.

I just think his attitude towards Tayne's perfectly fine car was uncalled for.

While I can see that some of Peter's posts come across as a teeny bit abrasive, it was mostly in response to the fact that the replies he got were somewhere at the pisstaking end of the unhelpfulness spectrum.

I am surprised that he came back to post pics of the car to be honest, so kudos for that.

Overall, I am not in favour of telling anyone to go away because their cars don't fit your personal definition of shite, it doesn't create a good atmosphere and valued posters whose cars are newer than some arbitrary cut off may decide to leave which is not cool.

This place ain't what it used to be. Oops, I've already said that.

While I agree with your final point, the fact Tayne offered the exact thing he was after and got roundly told that the car was shit leads me to think Peter was too abrasive.

Oh noes, slight fault on both sides?  But how do I deal with this armed with only my simplistic sense of judgement based on basically 1950s TV Westerns?  I need to know who wears the black hat and who wears the white hat.

Anyway, hopefully Peter can chip in with what it's like to own over the next couple of months because it will be interesting.

But Rovers must have been good, BMW bought them and fitted their engines inside of them!

Ergo, buy a 75 with a BMW engine. All the comfort of a Rover with the reliability* of a BMW. Then, when you're posting here stuck waiting for the AA we can console you by ripping the fuck out of the the fact that a BMW engine has possibly gone wrong.

There's a free Xantia up for grabs early next year by someone on here, then you would have £1k to do whatever you like with, possibly sitting in the pub explaining to people at great length who don't want to listen how you think Rovers are crap.

Rovers aren't crap, it's vauxhalls wot are - phackt!

There's a lot more more BM content in Rover 75s and MG ZTs than just the diesel engine.  Almost all of the electrical stuff and a lot of brake and suspension components are BMW (calipers on my ZTT are stamped BMW, so is loads of stuff) - some modified for Rover, some not.  The rear wiper and release on a 75/ZT tourer is identical to the E46 3 series one - lots more examples, so it always makes me laugh when people prefer a 3 series :)

Car purchased. Found a lovely 2001 330Ci SE, 100k on the clock, great spec, everything works, superb condition, mint engine and 'box. Purchase price only slightly exceeded the original budget but still a great result.

Have some pics.

That's the sort of thing I was considering before I realised that an high mileage omega MV6 with dodgy brakes and shagged steering but 12 months MOT for less than half the price met more of my requirements. i.e. 4 doors and more comfy seats, and less BMW.

Let me know when you decide to sell it, and I might or might not be interested.

I think it's  great. Shite motoring in that unless you do your own repairs with pattern parts it will bankrupt you.

How, exactly, did Tayne offer me anything?

Had it not been for his pointless contributions this thread would have been a lot more enjoyable to read for everyone.

There's a popular post now about a guy who's looking for a cheap old Merc. Should I post photos of my W124 or W123 on the basis that both are completely out of his price range and not actually available for sale? No!

Whilst most people on AS make this forum great, there are also some right dickheads on here as well.

LOOKS SHIT M8. WI11 U YOU SWAP FOR ROVER 75 AND A DEAD WOODLOUSE?

Only kidding. That looks like a lovely thing. No M-Sport bollocks to break your back, and at least being an auto there's less chance of it being ragged every day. You win at BMW.

What are the alloys called? They look like the style that base model was fitted with, if they'd been going down the gym every other day and drinking protein shakes that is.

Posted

Not sure what the alloys are called but they are bigger (17") than those fitted to the lower spec models and come as standard on the 330Ci SE.

Posted

You learn something new every day. Very Teutonic naming. While everyone else names their alloys after racetracks, BMW names theirs after numbers. I like how they keep it sensible.

Posted

I think that looks good for the money. Quite tempted myself. Am i right in thinking the petrol models are less likely to self destruct too?

A BMW pez straight six is a thing of beauty, plenty of power and torque, sounds great, if maintained it will go on forever. Mine (wife's actually) is an auto, thus, as already mentioned by others, most probably suffered less abuse.

After parking up the car on Saturday, I moved it first time this morning (2.5 days later). Started instantly, no top end rattle, selected reverse without a clonk, everything feels nice and tight.

I wouldn't buy an old diesel, there's too much to go wrong and they're bad for your health.

I've just acquired a 51 plate 320Ci in silver with black leather. It's a fucking horrible thing but will yield some decent bits.
