Made in Ireland

Been over in Dublin again - I bought my regular copy of Irish Vintage Scene - this one's a corker, with articles featuring a 1980 Fiesta and a 1982 Nissan Cherry N10 (as well as a pair of ace 70's Transits and various old tractor porn.

What I (in my ignorance) didn't realise was that the Nissan was made in Ireland.  The Fiesta wasn't, but Ford did make Escorts, Cortinas and Sierras in Cork until 1984.

The Nissan was made in Dublin, where a third-party outfit made them from 1973 until 78, when Nissan took over.

Ford 'bits' were shipped in to be assembled by the Ford plant in Cork in the 50s n 60's; in the era before steel containers; The components were shipped in massive wooden boxes; the workers in the plant took home the wooden containers in sections n reassembled them as houses; adding windows n a often a pitched roof - apparently there was 3 or 4 different sized of wooden shipping containers, n naturally enough the biggest were most coveted n fought over... according to a documentary, theres a few of these houses that still survive in Cork today...
