As my auto TS is coming along nicely, I am tempted to also pick up the above car, which has been on the bay for some little while! I think owning both a manual and an automatic 20TS would be a dream pair of motors! As it has loitered unsold for quite some time, I am thinking of making an offer, but no idea what these are worth? Suggestions much appreciated!

I'd just lowball it and see what happens, if he's got anything about himself he'll message back with a counter offer and you can go from there. If you do get through though, ask him how he trained his dog to MOT cars whilst he stands on his back legs wearing lipstick.

For best negotiation go and see the car, stand in front of the seller with at least deposit money in your hand.

Price will be hard to gage as not many get sold, so it will depend on his expectation and how badly he wants to sell it.

Me personally, if I was advertising a car for £2200 I would hope to get £1800 - £1900 so may be an offer of £1600 to start the ball rolling. I never like to ask for best price from the seller until I make my first offer and set the starting point.

How much do you want it, you are in control of that and set your own limit based on what you can afford and how much you would like to own it.

If you look at the R20 as being a 30 year old Laguna it must be worth about 99p. Seriously though, since he's asking £2k+ his expectations will be somewhat higher than 99p and it depends how deperate he is to sell. If it really has to go and you're the only buyer he might take £1k and I agree with six-cylinder that it will help to be standing there. If he knows you're an R20 fan that will help - can you drive up in yours ?.

Send in Mike Brewer-he always gets the car for half price-"old out yourrr and".

Stee

Yes but the price was in the script, even then it took 5 takes to film it!

PS I have to thank Mike Brewer because when I bought our 2CV the seller had seen his program and insisted on knocking £100 off the price when I would have paid his asking price, all because he had seen Mike do it and we even had to do the big handshake!

£900 plus the Green Shield stamp you found in the back of yours?

All joking aside just think about how you would feel if somebody offered you a pittance for your lovely car, try something towards fair and make the seller feel ok about it. An accurate appraisal of the car may reveal some unmentioned issues that you can use in your negotiation.

Try to find a way for the seller to save face when goes down the pub and tells his mates he sold his car for 99p and a green-shield stamp.

I was thinking of offering in the region of £1500 as a start and going from there? What does everybody think? Would that be cheeky?

That's sex on wheels!!!!

The other thing is, the guy who's selling the R20 also owns at least 2 R30s - no idea of the colours though............

i dont really know the UK prices, but over here a 4 pot R20 with large rust patches , worn seats, and what looks like povo spec wouldn't fetch half of what he is asking.

Deutschland?

I'm not sure it's Povo spec exactly - after all, it's got electric sunroof, central locking and electric windows. The trim levels on the 20, starting at the lowest were; L; TL; LS; TS: TX - personally I would love to find one of the 1.6 R20L! As they were extremely basic, and also underpowered, I would doubt if any still exist outside France. The L had the push - button door handles and electric nothing!

Thanks, that's getting towards what I'm looking for - but the L spec makes that look positively plush! Only made between 1975 and 1978, and very few ever sold! I saw one in Paris back in 2004, in truly atrocious condition (dents and surface rust), and up for sale at 2,700 Euros! Almost wish I had just paid the dosh - it may have been the last, and almost certainly will have been scrapped!

Just think about how ultra rare these R20 TX are that were made on July 7 1976 after 3 pm, only a handful made!!  Sure these fetch a hefty premium you are willing to pay?

Am I being daft in your opinion? I want to own rare and very unpopular cars, that is all!

You asked for what we think...

no, only slighlty blinded by the "want this" virus that may cause you to pay too much.

If you go viewing the car, take a good friend with you!

You maybe right - need to get my current TS on the road as a priority tbh

I would rock up with two grand in cash. Inspect the goods. If it's a good one, praise the car to the hilt, 'it's really nice, great colour".

Then an element of doubt. "Could I match the colour?".

Then: "It's what I want but I can't stretch to that. If I take it now, will 1500 quid buy it? I know it's a low offer but I'm chancing my arm". I always find "will XXXX buy it?" works better than "I'll give you XXXX for it".

1: Go on then or 'how about £1750'.

2: "No chance, no less than £2000'. Ball's in your court, but I've found driving away with your wad of cash will spur the phone call 10 mins later. "Go on then, £1500'.

I wouldn't pay £2200 for it, but I'm not aching to own it. In your position, £1800...........if you really want it.

Thanks rev! that's the kind of advice I'm looking for, being new to the shite buyer's market! The only thing I've bought so far was the Auto 20, but there the seller was a true gent: (What would you offer for it? Oh yes, that's ok, doesn't matter if someone offers me 5 grand, I've agreed to sell it to you for that price. Take it away now, I'll trust you to pay me when you're ready) - a real bit of old England, and encounters like these are what make the hobby great IMO!

I didn't know there was an L of misery down below the TL. Three stud wheels for the win... those door buttons are real "remind you how cheap you are" down-trimming. Also no roof aerial, which is another bonus 'cause I hate those.

Hey, I was born at that day, about 5 hours earlier!

As above, rare and valuable aren't the same thing. It comes down to what it's worth to YOU, if you are happy to pay £2k them make the call, if it's worth £1200 then you have nothing to lose by emailing an offer and explaining why. You never know, he may get back to you. I don't understand the idea of being insulted by an offer, nothing says you have to accept it after all.
