Steel Seal: Miracle or Snake Oil?

Does SS work or does it not?

 

In the hole with a new purchase and need a temporary bodge to keep it going while I hunt down a tame garage.

I used one of the heavy duty ones(whichever on halfords sell) to drive a 106 with a fucked headgasket. Kseal failed me, the other stuff got me from Dumbarton to Ayr before it went again. Luckily I lived in Ayr at the time...

Verdict - it's rubbish , save your money

Lots of people seem to have used it with good results. When I tried it on a D4D all it did was fuck the thermostat and stop the heater from working.

Is steel seal not the one that will give you your money back if it doesn't work (hence why it's 30 quid probably).

It only works on exhaust HG failures.

If that's the one, then you need a full report from a qualified mechanic (with evidence of qualifications too iirc) written up on company letterhead paper within a certain timescale (not too soon and not too long) and of course the original receipt that clearly shows the product being sold...

 

Then you can get your money back.

To increase the possibility of success with this product you should always remove the piston from the offending cylinder to give the porridge   'stronger than steel' formulation a chance.

wasted money on it for the Stag, didn't fix head gasket and filled the rad and heater matrix with Turkish delight that tasted funny.

 

Replace gasket ftw

 

K seal worked for me on last Rangie on a get me home type fix that lasted nearly 30k miles. Shit loads cheaper also.

I think there's a time and a place for stuff like K-Seal etc, it does genuinely work on stuff like weeping seals or slight leaks from heater matrixes. Stuff what might be a pain to swap or not financially viable. I wouldn't use it on something that was otherwise easy to swap and/or might result in sudden instant failure such as a worn out radiator. You can't expect miracles.

 

Used it to good effect on a Mondeo Thermostat housing that weeped when hot, the car was a few hundred quid job, and I had the k seal in anyway.

 

Second time was a water pump seal, again spotted in time, only slight leak and again it was a snotter. £12 sorted it out long enough to buy me six months motoring.

 

Third occasion with the Mondeo I've got now, the water cooled EGR wouldn't seal, don't know why, new Pierburg ones were coming out at quite a bit, the EGR itself worked fine once cleaned, chucked some K Seal in and it's worked fine the last 3 years and 30,000.

 

In summary then use it if it's to sort out a small weep or something that's expensive and or a pain to do. Don't expect it to sort out head gaskets etc...

 

By that measure then Steel Seal is a bit of a step too far.

£7 bottle of KSeal, what have you got to lose, it's worked on most of the engines I've tried. If the crack/hole is too big to plug, it won't work.

 

I've only seen photos of failures where the coolant system is so full of rusted crud from bad maintenance and then they blame the KSeal.
