Even thought I hate fake off roaders with a passion, I love these things. Come on, someone do it justice!

The Rancho's follow up was developed and put to Talbot, it was rejected, so they sold it to Renault, and it became the Espace. The wheelchair access puts me off. :(

And then Renault killed Matra after the tie up to produce the Avantime

The 2CV rear quarter windows in the sides of that thing make it look a very odd shape.

I do not know what it is about Ranchos but they have always made me spaff in my pants ever since i was a kid (early developer). GR8 4......well fuck all actually. But cool as milk all the same. I suppose they are a bit like Mike Brewer, totally shit at everything they do but generally quite likable. This in no way means i spaff my pants when i see Mike Brewer

Mike Brewer... likeable? :? Matra Rancho is wonderful though, for such a 'useless' car it's inspired a lot of successful ones.

Maybe it's more like Hull City FC. Did well at first, looked like they could play with the big boys then fell away, basically rather shit but still likeable.

Indeed. To both points! Mike Brewer is not at all likeable and the Matra Rancho is indeed wonderful.

They have such a satisfying shape to them. It's as if they have nearly hit on the most perfectly satisfying car to look at ever.

Being a wiper geek, I love the cut-out for the movement of the rear wiper, which gets extra cool points for being mounted at the top of the rear window.

I can only think of the Rover Streetwise or that funny Renault Scenic. Both well known successful cars...... 8)

I was thinking of the Land Rover Discovery and that alpine window/raised roof effort. So, er, one successful car then.

Surely all soft roaders owe a little to the Rancho? Off road looks with sod all actual off road ability - more and more are available with 2WD now too - the Scenic RX4 was jacked up, but actually has four wheel drive.

There's the VW Polo Dune & the Citroen C3 XTR as well! :D:roll:

that funny Renault Scenic. 8)

I'm pretty sure anyone who bought one would have found the experience most UNfunny

that alpine window/raised roof effort.

Er, the what? :?

So, basically, the Rancho inspired all the useless fashion statement 2x4s.I prefer to think of those horrible windows in the Discovery roof as a half-arsed tribute to the Safari roof Land Rovers.I cannot abide Ranchos.

OOh its a Talbot -Matra one too! Love these cars - I had lots of Corgi and Matchbox models of them, and evern had a big BBurago one too! I didnt realise till recently that these were almost pure Simca 1100, with a glassfibre rear bolted on.Before their time imo, these sorts of 'lifestyle' vehicles.*PEDANT MODE* I think the rear windows in the Simca Van are from a Dyane lol.

I love Rancho's. I'd love that sat on my drive. GR8 4 Tranzporting elderley family members to Bingo.

Wrong, I'm afraid, The Discovery was 'inspired' by LR losing a big chunk of their market to vehicles like the Shogun, Trooper, Fourtrak etc in the 1980s. The 2nd generation Fourtrack had that raised roof thing as well, which is probably where the LR designers got it from..Don't forget the Japs bought out a MPV before Renault or Chrysler, in 1982. OK, it was the Nissan Prairie so not really as much of a 'car' as the Espace, but it was the same type of vehicle before Renault or Chrysler's, both of which were inspired by the Chrysler Europe & Matra MPV project worked on in the mid 1970s. A Chrysler product engineer recalled the design in the late 1970s when the US firm were desperate for new product, and as Station says above, Matra took the original concept to Renault.

To be fair the Prairie was very much a car. Most of the under structure at the front was shared with the Sunny and Cherry. The rear end used trailing arms on torsion bars in order to get a very low floor in the back. They feel like a car and a surprisingly pleasant to drive. Reasonably nippy in 1800 form too.The prairie often gets forgotton as an MPV pioneer because export markets usually only got it as a 5 seater but it was available as a 7 seater in Japan. The Rancho was just as pioneering as the Prairie. It effectively created a market sector that wasn't really there before. Of course it isn't an offroader but then that's not what it was ever intended to be. I'd happily add a good one to my collection but I'm not in the market for any more projects unfortunately.

Or not - as its only a 3 door isnt it? Elderly rellys clambering past tipped front seats - NFTW!Buy a Berlingo - far better and in 20 years will be just as shitetacular - am looking for a 1.4 petrol with full lenghth sunroof in that horrid Jewish Racing Gold colour for under a grand - will probably be early 3 door too.
