Found an old school motor factors in my travels today. As I'm a masochist I went in and asked the bloke of he had an ignition control module for a rancho. I think I made his day, but all he could do was shake his head and lament what he'd chucked in the skip when he took the shop over.

Why do I get the old "fly fishing by j r Hartley" image in my mind when reading that?

You should have seen me at Beaulieu Autojumble.

So erm, it turns out I have one of these in a box of parts in my garage, is it the same as yours?

Drop me a pm if it is of any use?

Tried to send Ruff a PM, but not able to.

Anyway, if the Ruff module is as per the pic, I don't think it's the right one as mine has a 'D' shaped 5 pin connector.

Thanks Trigger, that looks like a good lead.

Check that you have the ignition type that is using a hall sensor, the cable to the distributor has 3 wires.

There is also a version with a magnetic sensor, cable has two wires, let me know if this is what you need.

Yep, cable to the distributor has 3 wires. I'm going to print off your technical bulletin and have a play.

Luckily Mrs. holbeck is a fluent French speaker so although she's not much into cars she does want the Rancho to be able to move and not be a garden ornament.

I spent the morning fiddling around with a multimeter and my pigeon translation of pshomes diagnostic sheet. The result of this is that all seems to be in order with the ignition module in terms of outputs and inputs. Anyway, after I'd put the connectors back I span it over on the key and it started and ran for 10 seconds then died and wouldn't go again. Must be a dicky earth or connection somewhere.

A little update.

When I first viewed the Rancho the bonnet was stuck closed, and in the course of fiddling with the catch I managed to ping the spring into orbit never to be seen again.

Anyway, yesterday I received a small package from France.

Remember this? well it's been tucked up in my garage not doing much for the last couple of months.

The main reason for this is that I decided after further investigation the root cause of my starting problems must be the ignition module.

In fact just as the people of AS had called it.

Anyway due to my procrastination the module that Trigger found for sale on Amazon had gone, so I found myself scratching around for options.

I found one on French ebay but it was 55 euro's and he wouldn't post to UK, there was one in the USA which I would have bought if they had replied to my messages (Plymouth Horizon also uses the same part).

And most unlikely of all the Feiben Motor Company of Changzhou would make me a batch of 20 if I so desired.

Anyway, rather boringly a Lucas equivalent one came up in the UK on ebay.

Although even this was mis-described The picture (above) was correct but the description was for the Sunbeam / Avenger type like the one that ruff offered me.

It turned out that the picture was of the actual part. And it dropped through my letterbox yesterday.

The swop over was simple enough, the old Ducellier part looked OK,

But when you turned it over the potting compound had degraded to the extent that you could put your finger into it like a block of jelly.

The new one in position and it started and ran fine after a little coaxing.

Don't start sulking, get your finger out.

:-D Not sulking, just slightly jealous of Mr Holbeck edging ahead in our unofficial race! I promise to keep chipping away at mine.

Yes.

I ran it up to temperature, and the fan didn't kick in. Although I actually suspect the culprit is the thermostat.

I'd stick after that amount of inactivity.

As I'm currently grounded and not enjoying dubious meat products in Cannock. I thought it best to do something productive instead.

These have been worrying me for some time. When I got the car they were secured with gaffer tape, yet still wobbly in even a light breeze.

Investigation time.

Yep that's broke. both are similarly ucked.

As a short term measure I decided to remove the lamps and refit the bases.

I've been pondering a continental excursion after being inspired by pshome's visit to Lipsheim bourse http://autoshite.com/topic/25851-1010-km/

That looks a likely place to find rockinghorse shit.

I have a whole crate of rabbit-shooting spotlamps that came with mine.  I'm confident we should be able to cobble together a working pair each - will pop by the shed tomorrow and make sure.

We were planning to do some more work on dismantling mine pre-welding this weekend, but I have a load of work to catch up on and Braddon81 is busy too.  (Yes I know being on here doesn't look like working, but I'm easily distracted.)

Really, thanks Skiz,  that would be amazing.

Hmm. Well, I think it's fair to say it's a common problem.

Between this lot (which includes the ones off my car) I have two that aren't similarly broken. I try to be a helpful chap and all that, but I hope you'll forgive me if I hang on to those for mine!

The approved* fix, as applied to some of the above examples, seems to involve a washer and some self tappers:

Possibly.  I was thinking the pivot is not a very complicated shape, and could just be 3D printed off a CAD drawing (which might be less faff than scanning).  It would probably want a bit of steel or ally rod for strenghtening, but that's hardly difficult to achieve.

At some point I will disassemble one of my broken light units and see what I can learn.  Meanwhile parts may be available on French or German eBay or somewhere, I haven't looked.
