2004 Volkswagen polo False alarm now back to BMW

I'm maybe remembering this wrongly, but is the 3 cylinder the one where the sump gasket leaks, and if you take off the sump to fix it, it won't go back on cos the block flexes? Or something?

Main bearing caps, not sump so I hear.

The stepfather had a low milage 2004 1.4 auto, 30k on the clock from what i remember.

It had a top end rebuild after some of the valves burnt out and while they had the head off the piston rings were fucked, VAG quality at its finest.

Having the 'pleasure' of being at a VW Main Dealer 2004 onwards....shit engine rather than shite old chap.

Rings failing, valves burnt out , valve guides of chocolate, terminal piston slap with gutless performance and poor fuel consumption, eats ignition components for fun etc etc.

All true.

So obviously you bought it :-)

I stumbled across this. Is it the 1.4 engine that's the problem?

I'm just about to invest in an '05 with 1.9 TDi PD engine. Have I lost my marbles?

The 1.9 PD TDI engines are great, go for 300k+ miles easily. I have a 55 Ibiza with the 1.9 TDI on 120k miles and it runs just fine. Parents used to have an Audi A4 with the 1.9 lump and that was fine when they sold it at 160k.

Is it one of these?

Because they're not that offensive to look at when someone has thrown actual colour at them.  If you squint you can pretend it's a late 90s Mercedes Benz E class.

VAG SHITE.

My friend has a mk4 Golf with the 1.4 16v engine, it's always been tappy, slow and uses oil on long journeys but has something like 150k on the clock now.

Thanks for all the help with the info on a Polo.. To be honest as it was such a low mileage little car I would of most probably still gone for it but once I had priced up for 4 new boots and the odd rubber bush it would most probably meant it wasn't that cheap anyway without the VW problems on top.

The Smart car is now sold and heading its way up north to a genuine Autoshite member and the reason I didn't take the VW was I lost my job before I had even started it so the lady I was buying it from was very understanding and said I didn't have to go ahead with buying the car although I would of it if was too much of a problem for her.

But it's not bad news as this mean machine is sitting in the garage collecting cobwebs so tomorrow I will drag it out and get it back on the road.post-9282-0-33582900-1471107883_thumb.jpeg

I've owned the car for over a year now and the mot has now run out since I last used it but it's absolutely immaculate 1 owner car and has only done about 58000 and it's a Ti with the M44 engine and drives lovely or it did before I parked it up.

So I might of lost my job but at least I get to drive a lovely hellrot red Compact now so every cloud has a silver lining.

Sorry about the job - but you've dodged a potential world of pain. Good call.
