PBK Golf - for shale. Buy it you fuckers.

Well the 'foar sail' attempt appears to have died a slow, painful and meaningless death :)

It gives a fair barometer reading of how fecking worthless and unloved these things are. I mean, if I can't sell it on Autoshite then I'm fucked lol.

However, the little Golf has wormed it's way into my affections and I think it will stay. No other option tbh lol++++.

I have even fitted a new number plate FFS. The original one was cracked to buggery.

I also noticed that the thermostat housing was seeping coolant from around one of the mounting bolts. It was a very, very slight weep but seeing as a new one is £15 posted (and includes a thermostat) then it would be silly to just leave it. Hopefully it will be here by the end of the week and fitted at the weekend.

I'd given the engine bay a wipe over and it looks brilliant, really, really tidy and possibly THE tidiest engine bay of all the old cars I have ever had.

Here is a reminder:

Plan: I may as well keep it. I will get it lobbed in for an MOT next week and then taxed and insured. I'll do the cosmetics as and when.

I just need to find a nice pineapple to fit to the car.

I'm thoroughly enjoying driving the 1.8 slusher I bought from sporty-shite - not even sure why because it's not great at anything in particular

I would have liked it as I've always fancied (warning: pineapple comment ahead) making a US Harlequin replica but the XM is in the way. I've seen a couple in the UK but they are both hella sick camber yo and probably only go to shows whereas I would actually drive the thing like a car.

I had a browse on eBay yesterday to see if there was anything interesting/useful for the Golf.

Result: I bought some alloy door pins.

Whoohoo.

I don't require coilovers, bonnet bras, mega rimz or rear spoilers.

eBay may now be dead to me lol.

I will upload a couple of pics of the thermostat housings just to show how goosed the old one was.

Hang on.......

Am a little surprised that it didn't leak more than it did. Yay! A job for Saturday then :)

I can't be paying companies 300 odd quid to cover the roof and bonnet of the Golf with carbon fibre wrap. That is just stupid.

Any shitters fancy giving me a hand if I buy the product and prep the Golf?

Liquid refreshment and food will be made available.

I've seen a mk2 one but it was full on dubbermong with massive camber and huge rear arch extensions. Looked good otherwise though.

I'd like to see a mk3 Harlequin.

Which is exactly what I want to avoid. Non of the slammed, polished/multi coloured wheels, just a fun, usable car. If you're going to the trouble of putting something like that together why not make it usable so other people can get a kick out of it too instead of making it a show car where the only people that will see it already know about them?

They're utterly ridiculous.

Ain't happening :)

Unless you want to swap for an XM estate?  :-P

Is it roadworthy? If it is, I could give you a hand with the wrap when you come up next if you don't get a better offer. I can't guarantee I would be any good though........

I was hoping to get the Golf MOT'd this week but I appear to have been defeated by a large plastic U clip that secures a plastic water pipe to the opening just under the thermostat housing. Of course I only realised this when I connected every fucking thing else up and put water in the header tank. No clip on the original, just bodge.

Cheers Clive, might just take you up on that.

Now where to find this bloody clip.

XM estate. Nice but likely 'too French' for my now seemingly fickle insurers.

VW stealership, I'm afraid.

Check the part code here, and be prepared to pay at least a tenner for a crappy piece of plastic. All modern* cars are shit etc.

Well, I need the O ring 032121666 and a retaining spring 037121142E. Thanks for the link :)

I think that was it's strength. It was good at most things, but not great.

Coolant bits sorted. A big 'thank you' for all concerned.

Hopefully some more Golf fettling might occur at the weekend and perhaps MOT next week? We shall see.

I went to look at a blue Mk3 Golf yesterday. It was sound enough but lock covers had been fitted and rust stains could be seen around them. Wiper arm was in the boot. The spindle turned happily enough but the owner couldn't be arsed to refit it. Exhaust was blowing and it had about a week left on the MOT. The front screen rubber was falling apart.

He wanted £250, I offered £180. He declined. I walked away.

I think my one was much better despite the doggy interior.

Ok. Rubber O ring and plastic clip fitted (eventually). The clip was a bit of a fiddle and I can see why someone might not put it in.

Obv better doing it properly.

So. Top up with water for now just in case it all gushes out of that bottom flange joint.

Hmm, no leakage. This is an improvement.

Car starts and gets up to temp. Hoses squeezed and eventually all hoses are toasty hot.

Top up the coolant level a tad.

Dash over to the drivers side and put the heater on, slide the control to hot. Dopey git.

Temp guage goes slightly over the mid point. Fan kicks in and shuts off as it should.  Yay!

Squeeze hoses a bit more. All going well. The temp gauge is rock steady at mid point.

No leaks!

The air temp being pushed out of the vents is warm rather than hot and toasty.

Temp gauge still remains rock steady. No leaks whatsoever :)

Top up coolant level slightly.

All good apart from the warm air rather than hot air.

Meant to say that the Golf started first turn of the key.

It's a decent little thing :)

Golf fettling occurred this afternoon. Removed the rest of the knacked lacquer from the roof, gave the dull paint a clean and half-arsed polish.

It'll get sanded down eventually when I apply the wrap. Eventually.

I started her up and she idled happily and the temp needle was again rock steady. The air pumping out of the vents was much hotter today :)

Gave the interior trim a wipe over, a couple of bits to refit such as the two sill trims and the sunvisors.

Exterior paint was cleaned, clayed and waxed. A quick spray of detailing spray on the door shuts and job done Looking good (apart from the roof and the bonnet)  :)

MOT on Weds is now official. Must lob in some petrol.

All internal trim fitted, discovered that this car has a cabin filter! It is in far from pristine condition though.

Have some car pics (taken by phone camera, so might be a bit blurry):

Well it is official!

The PBK ex-smelly dog/skip Golf is now on the road. It is very red.

Posted

The garage is empty. A silver Italien may appear, or a blue R75 (won't fit) or a black Puma (should fit).

Does anyone have a local breaker with a 5 door version of one of these in? I could with a door rubbing trim and a rear wheel arch trim bit.

My local one does not possess such a thing.
