More eBay shit

Today I received my wiper blades for the C4. They're new OEM blades at about half the price of what a stealership would charge. They're from a private seller and she wanted £4.50 for second class postage.Thought it was extortionate, but I paid because I needed them.Get the package through today and she's paid £2.08 for carriage with the shitiest wrapping I've ever seen. I know it's minor but I never make money off postage. Can I ask for it back or do I just get ebay involved if she ignores me?

I'd ask the question of her. Can you still leave detailed feedback in respect of postage? She'll probably say she had to travel 20 miles to the post office blah blah

The postage is meant to cover the cost of postage + packaging + time spent + travel costs to post office. No chance of getting the money back. You just goto work on the fact that you got some cheap blades and the postage was just a ripoff. Ebay though and through really.

Posted

I'd certainly ask her for something back as that is excessive. £3.00 would have been reasonably fair.Otherwise just threaten her with a good hard negging  Its fair enough to charge more than the actual price of the postage as you do have the cost of packaging materials, time etc (or at least business sellers do) but to charge double is silly.

My postage charges are always more than the postal costs (unless I've messed up), because I've got to pay for packaging and brown paper, bubblewrap and tape can add up to be surprisingly expensive if you're sending fragile items and want to protect it properly (never had anything arrive broken yet!).Also, I don't have time to weigh stuff so I just guess the postage charges - sometimes I take a hit, sometimes they do, usually about £1-2 either way (postage charged is usually between £7-10). At the end it tends to balance out in my favour, but only just.If they turned up undamaged, I'd just leave it at that to be honest.

eBay will just tell you that you accepted the shipping cost the moment you made your bid. Were the blades cheaper overall inc postage than you could have got them elsewhere? If so, what harm has been done.

Nothing other than the knowledge that someone has taken the mick

Let's just re-cap here... 1. You got genuine wiper blades at HALF price.2. The seller overcharged you by a couple of quid for postage.I think you should consider the over all picture here. So what if they made two english pounds? You got cut price parts delivered to your door without you having to do more than press a few buttons. They did the leg work for you AND saved you money.

LOL! yeah I don't think the European Court of Human Rights will have much truck with this one. Consider this 'day zero' and try to rebuild a new life from here on.

roffle!I think that trading standards, your local paper, "Watchdog", your MP etc would all be very disinterested in hearing from you about this matter.

They would have pocketed about 3 pence after ebay fees and paypal fees...a couple of quid for packing them, driving to and then queuing(usually behing people drawing dole/pension money) in the post office is money well spent if you ask me.

You got the (presumably) correct wiper blades cheap, Jon. You can't moan about the woman making £2.50 on the P&P, for lords sake!Ebay will probably take her side, if anything.

This made me larf, do they still have that BBC show 'Watchdog'? Can you imagine that woman with the Scottish (I think) accent who used to knock on the doors of mass murderers and ask what they have to say for themselves?"Hello, I'm from the BBC, how do you feel about charging MORE than two POUNDS for postage'

I had this the other day, got charged 5 quid for postage when it cost £2, I was going to say something but then I thought I hit the buy it now button so it's down to me  In the past I have made a couple of quid here and there on postage and I lose a couple of quid now and again. It all evens itself out over time the ebay postage game

Fair enough if the postage is listed in black & white on the auction & you decide to proceed! I tend to use the Hirst rule of thumb as a seller myself

Yeah but it sticks in the craw when you agree in good faith to pay £x for p+p then it quite clearly is double that when you receive it - I know we win and lose in these situations but some people just take the p!ss  It's just mean spirited. Rant over

Agreed. I was just pissed off with it all TBH because I don't dick about with the postage. Her reply:

HI,GLAD YOU HAVE RECEIVED THE WIPERS.CHARGES ARE FOR POSTAGE AND PACKAGING,NOT JUST THE COST AT THE POST OFFICE.THE CHARGES WERE CLEARLY LISTED AND YOU WERE HAPPY TO PAY WHAT WAS LISTED SO WHY ARE YOU THREATENING ME WITH POOR FEEDBACK.I HAVE NEVER HAD ANY COMPLAINTS BEFORE.I WILL NOT BE REFUNDING ANY MONEY AND IF YOU LEAVE BAD FEEDBACK I WILL DO THE SAME FOR YOU!

I then reply with:

Right, so three punched through used jiffy bags and some packing tape cost £2.42 do they? Bloody hell, I'd go and have a word with the post office if I were you, you're getting done. How else could I have got the wipers sent to me if I didn't accept your charges? Just admit the packing costs were excessive and we'll leave it. I must start charging mental rates for P&P on the stuff I sell, top tip, cheers.PS: Nice use of caps lock.PPS: Wipers are great by the way, I like being able to see stuff when I drive. You can't win everything now can you?

Whatever. She's still getting 'fuck all' out of 5 for her P&P charges.

Clearly I am not the only one who has no idea why you are making a big deal out this.It was a couple of quid FFS, If I sold you some half price wipers and you cried about the post I'd leave you a big fat neg!Next time go to the main dealer - they wont charge you any post at all.Maybe you're just having a bad day.

Ever had a REALLY shit day at work, and the smallest thing riles you?

QED.

I'm not that much of an arsehole - I still left her a positive. The wipers are great. I have to deal with the biggest whingers on the face of the planet every day and perhaps it got to me, who knows.

If I pay £5 for a can of coke is it Schwepps fault?

If you buy a can of coke, its got nowt a-do with Schweppes....and if you pay a diver per can, you need your bumps feeling

I must admit I have some sympathy. Last time this happened to me the seller first tried to claim the extra was covering his eBay fees, and when I pointed out the dim view eBay takes of such practices he backed down and asked me how much I wanted back. Taking photos of damaged items due to pisspoor packaging helps in such situations :)

The wipers were undamaged. But the packaging was shit, to put it lightly, and the blatant display of '£2.08' on the front of the packaging made me feel like a bit of a mug. It shouldn't have wound me up, it just did. She blatantly had all of the materials there to package the wipers up, the jiffy bags had writing on them so they were received cartons.Anyway, that's it now, some of you think I'm being petty, and I probably am. 98% of the time I would let shit like this slide even though were the situation reversed I'd have admitted that my estimate was over the odds and asked if the buyer wanted a refund on the difference. And before you say it, my email to her was polite. I asked her to justify how she could charge an extra £2.40 for some skanky packing materials and she sent me that pile of ranty caps back.I had a very bad day at work and getting it with that price on just smacked of a complete piss take.

we all have bad days...............I have them most days, it pissed you off, you ranted and in the end you felt better, then all is good in the end of the day, if its petty, SO WHAT !! it pissed you off at the time and thats the point.

Thing is though, a fair number of ebay buyers do think brown paper, bubble wrap and boxes all grow for free somewhere as you do get some that email 'Hi, I paid you £2.50 for postage yet noticed it only cost £2.38. Please can you let me know why you feel it is ok to overcharge?" She is taking the piss with piss poor packing and its that sort of thing that pisses everyone off about ebay but, in the end I suppose its not worth getting wound up about.
