Mk1 mx5. To keep or to punt....

With no room at the inn, i have gone and bought a K plate mx5 , stacks of history, yrs mot, had lots of welding done, stainless exhaust, done 100k mechanically spot on but a few frilly bits on wings and a pogweasel pink front bumper. The chap has had it 11 years. Should i use it and then find a corner of the shed to keep it indefinately along with the rest, or, run it a wee bit amd punt it. I cant help thinking they are at an all time low, and even a really shit mk1 will always be worth something and i will reget passing it on.

The chap has just spent £700 on it a couple weeks ago, that is pretty much what i would need for it. He bought a lovley 56 plate one to repalce it.....

Keep it - another few years and its likely to be almost as ££££ as chrome bumper Sherpa Coops

If it doesn't owe you much, keep it for summer sunshine* fun, then punt on later on. Otherwise, move it on. They've been at an all time low price-wise for a few years now, and they don't seem to be changing for the foreseeable. However, if you want to buy one as a future keeper/ investment, replace it with a non-rusty one, as there are still plenty out there which haven't been welded up. I sold a 94 black mk1 (fourth mk1 I owned over the years) around a year ago, and it was genuinely rot free. Arches, sills, the lot - not a spot of the brown shiz. It was a turbo conversion with some goodies as well, and I got just over £2200 for it. If it was non-turbo, I doubt I would have been able to get over £1500 for it, despite the fact it was such a clean, genuine one. It even had a recent roof...

Having had mine 6 months now I'm weekly changing between keeping it for a bit because its fun and might go up in value, and selling it and buying [insert whatever car I fancy this week]...

They're good fun, and values for good ones are slowly on the rise...

I say enjoy it for a bit!!

Keep it! Have you driven it yet? When I say driven, I mean properly driven/hoon?

They're the most fun you can have on the road while keeping the right side of the law & speeding limits. Parts are cheap+plentiful, economical, tough engines (non interference on some too!) and it has pop-up lights!

I really miss both our mk1 and mk3. :(

The mk1 we had 130k odd on the clock and ran absolutely a-ok. This was nearly 7years ago and it's still on the road (apparently). Even if it did have a few years off due to rot failing MOTs!

Prices are already on the rise, but only really for the special editions in first rate condition. It's like most areas of the classic car market, where there's an increasing gulf between values for the best examples and the 'not bad.'

I'd keep it because you want to own it rather than hope it'll be a super investment.

Never driven one of those, but everyone I know who has likes them. I'd definitely keep it for a bit and see how you go.

Do like the look of those older ones too.

Basically what he said! As a serial 5 owner I can recommend them highly, fun, reliable, cheap, surprisingly practical, easy (mostly) to work on and with good aftermarket parts availability.

The NA/Mk1's will always be worth more money than others but I wouldn't treat it as an investment as such, keep it nice, enjoy it and when it's time to move on, it'll pay you back I'd say.

If you really, really don't want it, I'm sure I could be convinced to upgrade the Kia
