Putting the effort into creating a pair of fully functioning calipers is very worthwhile.

Sure is! The difference is amazing as you would expect. The pads were girling ones with plenty of meat on them, as it's only done 60,000 or so miles I wonder how long they have been on there. I doubt they have been on since new but I would think they are about a third worn.

The MoT is booked for next Monday at 4pm which will be a bit tight as I am due to give a talk to one of our sponsors at 6pm and there is a bit of distance between the two. If it passes I will be taxing online and taking the dolomite! Yesterday was a washout and three nights this week are full so this weekend will be for the last few bits of MoT prep.

Are sure any MOT prep will be minimal at best mate.

Just waiting on some decent weather to bleed the new calipers again. Electrics are checked and ok apart from flash to pass on stalk but have got one off eBay so will fit if it arrives in time. The springs could do with a wire brush and paint but not essential. Then will just double check everything but fingers crossed. Headlight may well need adjustment but will do that there if needed, engine is running very sweetly and has cleaned out the exhaust a bit after a couple of shortish runs. The rear tie bar bushes are cracked but there is no play so I think they will pass, easy enough to change if needs be anyway. I hate MoTs which I stupid really as my cars usually pass as I always check them over myself first but a new car can always bring a surprise or two so we will see.

The stalk is a bit of a bugger as the wiring cable goes down via the steering column :(

 it would be wouldn't it, had that out a couple of weeks back. It's not essential so will do if it arrives and I get time.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was a stalk in your box of bits I fetched!

The stalks are a weak point as they burn out. The small Triumphs need a bigger proper fuse box and proper relays fitting in all honesty.

I got a pair for £10 off eBay so happy at that. It's only the flash to pass that's an issue but I like things to work and when I am doing 140mph in the outside lane of the autobahn I need a way to let all the poor people in their M3s know when to move out the way.

Ready for tomorrow, booked in for 4pm.

  • Test date20 June 2016
  • Test ResultFail
  • Odometer reading65,329 miles
  • MOT test number2800 0330 5577
  • Reason(s) for failure

Parking brake: efficiency below requirements (3.7.B.7)
offside front Subframe mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded as marked (2.4.A.3)
nearside Front wheel bearing has excessive play (2.5.A.3c)
  • Advisory notice item(s)

    Oil leak
nearside rear Brake pipe slightly corroded (3.6.B.2c)
offside rear Brake pipe slightly corroded (3.6.B.2c)
offside Front wheel bearing has slight play (2.5.A.3c)
Both rear trailing arm bushes worn

Does not look too serious a fail. I love being able to check any vehicles MOT history, it's super useful.

Not too bad, the bearing is the one I changed, I did it as per Haynes manual but it seems to have bedded in a bit so just needs adjusting. The welding is a small crack that I missed and is thirty to forty minutes work. The handbrake would have passed if it was dual circuit but because it's single circuit it needs to be more efficient.

Any tips Ken? I am just planning on stripping and cleaning everything, then greasing it up and seeing if that sorts it.

Only issue is that it will Saturday morning before I can retest it at the earliest. cutting a bit fine for Shitefest and need to hope it doesn't need any parts. And some kind person has parked their car on the lift at work and buggered off for the week which makes doing the handbrake a ball ache.

No, nothing apart from making sure it is all clean and tidy. Shoes ok?? Might be worth just giving the drums a once over with some grit paper, maybe the shoes might need a little 'roughing up' perhaps? Nip the bearing up a bit tighter and then do it properly after the test as normal Triumph bearing happiness can seem a bit sloppy to non-Triumph folk. Can't think of owt else mate.

Posted

Thanks Ken, I will have a play over the coming evenings and just hope it doesn't need any parts as getting a bit close for Saturday!

It should be fine mate, you've done the hardest bits that needed doing. This is just finessing it.

A necessary evil to do 'em up too tight for a test and back 'em off after. Either that or beat the tester senseless with a manufacturer's workshop manual.

To be fair this guy is good in that way, I think the bearing has just 'settled' as it's the one I replaced and it wasn't like that when I had done it. It's a two minute no so not fussed. It's the handbrake that will take time but will get there.

Thirty to forty minutes work, someone give me a slap if I come out with crap like that again. Turns out some twat way back in 2007 had used fibreglass instead of steel so a short easy job turned into a three hour shit of a job, especially as my welder decided to be a complete arse and my auto darkening helmet decided to be anything but despite new batteries and being launched across the park (I was peed off seriously by that point). It's sorted now but fear I may have a bit of arc eye coming on which won't be nice.

Sounds almost as bad as pink eye, I'm not sure which is worse...

I had to make a piece to go from the forward subframe mount to the front panel mounting return of that makes sense. It's quite a complicated shape but the electric shears are a god send for jobs like that. A lot of time was spent clearing out all the fibreglass. Probably an hour was spent repairing/ swearing at the welder on and off.

Oh what a nut ache. At least it is all 'proper' now eh?

Now get that bloody handbrake sorted! :)
