Renault Twingo, Purchased

Recommended Posts

I'm in France working atm, there's loads of chod around, best spot so far is a early Renault 5 turbo, looking very nice in the sun outside a window showroom. pity I'm driving most of the time otherwise my phone would be full of pics! Anyway, this trip has reignited my love for the classic Renault Twingos. (mainly because they are everywhere!)  I have zero budget and no room for one but would love your for sale posts, and suggestions. location wise, erm I'd pick one up from France, currently in Le Mathes approx. 160KM from Bordeaux -  I know we have some French shitters so could well be up for a euro collection fred.

I'm just about to set off on a cycle ride to the beach on my £10 mountain bike I picked up off facebook. :) looking forward to suggestions!

Leboncoin?

And maybe easier to import now before possible Brexit!

There's loads just across the pond, within spitting distance of Calais.

Prices are still dropping, down to 300 euros for a test free clunker, but I don't think it will be long...

This one lives with me in sunny Leicester, will be for sale when registered. Mint fresh and 20,000 miles!

A rough one on french plates sold for I think £100 a couple of weeks ago locally to me. Was tempted myself but the registering it on English plates might have been interesting

If you have the French log book its a piece of cake, I haven't, so its not...

Thanks for the suggestions -  that's one nice twing, probably want a lot more than a few hundred quid.

Im back now so can start the search.

For 100 quid, I wouldn't have bothered.

"Just bought it officer".

what should I be looking for when looking at a Twingo?

anything I should be looking out for model specific?

A Citroen AX in blue would increase your sex appeal by 1200%. I know of just the very AX for you.

Clio engines were used after '95 I think, before that it was the old R4/5 lump. If it isn't rotten and runs well, I'd be keen. Did they ever sort out the lack of adjustment in the timing chain tensioner on the old Cleon units?

I may have found a half decent one, obvisoually miles away from me, as in a 400+ mile round trip so If I go and see it I want to be armed with knowledge.

What became of this little thing? I still haven't fixed mine, the D7F confuses me.

Twingo's are ace, we hired one several years ago in Frenchland when we had a place over there.

Here's mine. An early 93, in pretty reasonable nick.

It's cheap, economical, easy to run and predominantly rust free, although it does have a couple of strange scabs in weird places.

I find it a joy to drive, when able. Currently doing sterling service in sunny Belgie (not!) I've a nice set of alloys and several other bits to do so might haul it across to the Uk soon.

If you are local to the south coast, you'll be welcome to give it a try..

That looks very nice, thanks for the offer, if I was close I'd come take a look.

I did drop an email about that very sexy gold example above, no reply yet, however I feel it'll be over my budget.

Typical rot spots on Twingos are the front inner wings behind the dampers and the back of the rear sills. The (plastic) fuel tank sits very close to the left-hand rear sill, and cannot be easily removed without dismantling half of the car, so careful welding is required around here.

The one we hired on holiday in 2006 was pristine apart from an actual rust hole in the middle of the panel below the windscreen. Not a clue how that could have happened!

In terms of what to look for, if it isn't rusty then anything else is minor. They do like to rust.

I really must have another at some point. Loved mine very much.

May have found a little twingo. Am I brace enough to buy unseen? I'm back in France and one has popped up localish to me back in England..

Yup:  as he says ^^    both my front strut springs broken, but was passed on MOT

by previous owner, Wuvvum, of this parish !

Great little cars though, I love the quirky but practical design, I think the earlier R5

versions would be the better choice, personally; mine was a '98 with the D7F motor,

full length canvas sunroof, which I am told, fit straight into a R4 in France, so a lot are

broken just for the sunroof over there....

Regret selling it, but had to make way for a corvette roadster ......

Well yes apparently I'm that stupid, paid a deposit on the car and l'm on my way to pick it up, well I'm actually going home but it's really a collection for my little twingo.

500 miles down, only about 300 to go!
