For driving in that Abroadshire

That's not died out alltogether.  I've got a pair.  Drive on to ferry, wife and daughter go upstairs, I fiddle about with screwdiver for 10 minutes removing the grille from the car, fitting the deflectors and then puting the grill back on while trying not to drop any screws.  Seem to get some odd looks during that operation but it does make the world look funky when driving at night.

And how many people around you do you usually see doing the same thing in order for it to still be fashionable?

I realised that after I posted. Umm. I think it perfectly proves my fashion credentials.

Overtaking.

Nobody seems to do that anymore. They seem quite happy in their long lines of little silver cars, snaking their way across country at 15mph behind a tractor, blinding everybody coming the other way with their bastard daytime running lights, safe in the knowledge that, being retired, it doesn't matter to them if they choke up the working arteries of the country, as they can continue to draw their inflated pensions to buy the kind of crap that no one wants to inherit instead of buying something decent to depreciate so that I can afford to buy it second hand in five years....

Posted

I think cars have grown so powerful people are too scared/haven't the skills to overtake.

Posted

Although on my recent transcontinental trip, I noticed that this has only gone out of fashion in Britain.

It's quite the fashion for the ones going slow to plant their foot should you wish to overtake them, though.

overtaking? Just making progress seems to have died out.

Getting anywhere at more than 45 mph seems alien to most drivers now.

I think that stupid inaccurate "speed kills" campaign had more effect than we realise.

During rush hour there are still a few who will risk their company chariots in order to gain one position in the queue at the next junction/roundabout. It has always been that way, though airbags mean they can now do it in complete safety.  Centre suicide overtaking lanes have gone out of fashion.  Clearly there is no longer a need to keep population numbers in check.

I use the A5 a lot.  Overtaking is fit and well, though less than 50% of drivers have heard of 'mirror, signal, manoeuvre.'  Tailgate, swerve, barge back in is the preferred method.

Is 'Barrying' out of vogue these days?

In comparison to say 10 years ago, there seem to be far less god-awful angle-eyed shit heaps around.

Posted

think insurance has killed the barry boys awefull bodykits and add on tat...like you say 10-20 years all the young kids had a barried up shitter

Posted

I still see a fair few barried shitters around, 99% Vauxhalls, usually diesels belching out smoke and OMG EGR DELETE REMAP DECAT, vinyl stickers all over with words on that are in a font that's impossible to read. There's a couple of Zafiras in particular that look ridiculous and have exhausts that are loud enough to wake the dead.

new kids have to make do with stickers lol , wtf are those  massive ones down the side of the screen about

also used to hear all the cars pumping out bass but hardly ever hear one now

We still have these in Dorset. Unfortunately non locals do not understand them and as only one side has a single white line on the outside to stop "triple" overtaking people think it means only one side can overtake and they have the right to sit in the middle lane. Their look of fear and disgust when a car pulls out to overtake forcing them back into the empty inside lane makes the operation worth it in my view. Although my favorite is using the third lane to overtake two slower cars, perfectly legal and great if you are in a hurry.

Yeah, that's the ones! I'm sure it's some sort of profound message against "the system", if only it was readable.

If you mean you are crossing a solid white line then it's no surprise they have a look of fear as its illegal. You may cross a single white line if you also have a dashed white line inside it, but the 'crawler' lane arrangements often don't have those on the other carriageway to prevent just what you have described.

By your description doobietoo, you don't still have them - well I think RayMK is talking about old-school no-solid-lines-anywhere-to-be seen-triple-lane-efforts, like this (for playing proper middle lane chicken):

Having to stop to let the engine cool down. I can remember many a trip to the seaside when I was a kid and we'd pull over for a rest to 'let the engine cool down'. I'm not sure they were overheating moreover a concern if he pressed on they might.

Don't think there's much need these days to mod cars, they've all got CD players and Alloys anyway. The new idea seems to be (though correct me if I'm wrong) get finance on a 8 year old diesel, then start fucking about with the pump timing (again I'm guessing here) causing it to chuck loads of black smoke out, then obtain some transfers that look like a tatoo for the windscreen that fulfil a few jobs namely obstructing your view. Obviously this all costs money, so instead of actually speaking to women, you hang around McDonald's car parks rather than attending a second rate nightclub trying (and failing) to attract members of the opposite sex.

This combined with people's use of social media has meant we've now got a generation of people that cannot interact with people save for meeting at Asda on a Tuesday night on the outskirts of a failed mining town, to tell lies to other 'fellow enthusiasts' about their boring stories about how their 55 plate Golf Diesel can do over 146 mph on the Dronfield bypass.

That's the ticket.... perfectly ok to overtake in both outside lanes if heading away.... I cannot see the white line makes it so different.... and it only stops cars heading towards you using the third lane...

Bored with having a go on the EU thread so you have followed me here now?

Bored with having a go on the EU thread so you have followed me here now?

Are you paranoid or something? It's a forum, the idea is to discuss things. I have posted on loads of threads with and without you. You are so full of your own importance it's tragic.

Accuses me of driving illegally, is wrong as usual, then accuses me of being paranoid and full of self importance.... How about just saying sorry for being wrong... again..... and leaving it at that?

Do you not understand English? Is the meaning of the word 'IF' lost on you? So 'IF' you weren't doing what you implied you were doing then you could perhaps clarify rather than being an arse and getting all paranoia style 'oh no people are following me'. And for your information I barely commented on your drivel on the EU thread, there were far too many others pointing out over and over again what rubbish you were posting. So if anyone needs to apologise it ain't me, but fuck that, just get a life.
