My 95 jag x300 has started everyday and managed 350miles per week for the last 4 and a half years with little maintenance

320touring/Reverend/Tetleysmooth 730i shitter. Had the catalysts cut open and gutted because they'd both collapsed inside. Sounded lovely afterwards.

awe bless. a blast from the past!

is it now baked bean canz?

Yep. Not taxed or tested since '07. It had done 180'000 though and the underside resembled the Titanic - Scotish winterz.

Tetley came up on the coach and glided away in the V8 beast. Mechanically it really was lovely, such a smooth drive.

Aye I mind it looking like the underside of a boat:)

Japanese: Lexus anything, or a Honda Legend

German: Late 1990s 7er

British: Jaguar S-Type (post 2001ish)

Anything from the top of an American range, and the older the better, so Lincoln Continental/Town Car, Cadillac Fleetwood, Imperial, 1960s/70s.  Try not to buy later models.

Everything else, literally everything, is second best, unless you can afford (and keep up) a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow 1.

Lexus 400 or even 300 is a good shout, as is Volvo 7/9 series.  Jags are good contenders, but horrifyingly thirsty.

If you ignore the propensity to rust, Senators , and of course, my Omega

Good call I've loved all my Senators most have been 24V flavour but some were 2.5 or 3.0 12V

Here are just a few of mine over the years

Scrapped my last one in 2006 which was a shame but I discovered accident damage I never knew about and it was worth more in bits than whole - they do like to rust a bit

Current Barge is this

DSCF4835.jpg

1998 Face lift Full fat 4.4 V8 with 90 bhp more than a std Senator but not a patch on a Senator for ride comfort or steering feel - also starting to rust but I've owned it since 2005 and it's never been garaged so I guess it's to be expected

Agree with LS400, regret flogging mine, but mpg etc and so on - bit leftfield but Kia Magentis/ hyundai Sonata / XG30 got to be contenders, especially as you can get a low mileage, later model for peanuts :-D

Honda Accord coupe V6, the sports Luxxobarge.

Much V6 waftyness but reeks less of Pringle jumpers and the golf club.

Quiet and comfortable with 200bhp on tap when you want to proceed swiftly instead of wafting.

It's more of a sexy Legend than an Accord.

To my mind a barge should seat at least 4 in comfort - I've been in the back of one of those and it was quite cramped

Tagora! Really, no kidding, never ever left stranded by a Tag, and i do drive them a lot. After all, it's the best 505 Peugeot ever made.

After my long and turgid post extolling the virtues of the LS400, I have to admit that I have never had one. Do fancy one though and I have been watching them for ages. Prices seem to be on the up... always a good sign I reckon.

Re LS400s.

Mine was a 1995 M with sheddy bodywork and rust over one arch. It hadn't had any service history since 2005 and no documented cambelt change since the year 2000.

The previous owner had done a couple of good things, but they'd counteracted this by fitting a resistor chip from eBay and gan'ster tinting the windows, so I can tell how it was driven when they were driving it about.

It spent the first five minutes every day screaming its head off at 2,000rpm, and had various water features in the boot.

And yet never has a car oozed pure reliability. I simply didn't worry that it would break down. The only real issue I had was the American style handbrake cable breaking, causing it to become utterly jammed.

This fix at a garage was just £200. It costs more than that to whack a few basic OEM parts on your shiney '15 plate euro Hatch at a garage.

When three Scottish lads appeared to take it away, I was more worried about THEM not being able to physically make the 500 mile journey back. The car? Pah. I reckon it could be driven to the south of France on a whim, no prep, servicing...just go!

The same could be said of a lot of shite that is owned/loved on here of course, but none would do it quite in the same style as a V8 land-yacht with over-drive.

Don't worry, I'm sure Junkman will be along shortly to advise purchasing several gargantuan Yank automobiles.

Yep, the Chevy Caprice would be such a car. Finding one is the challenge.

Blimey, was that the V8 I bought all those years ago?

There's a story behind that.

Can you remind me of your username on the BMW forum? By pm if you like.

May have been the 7 Series Register? That's a still very good.

But the story about K377EYW would be good. Twice it put the shits up me.

One was a rhythmic noise that I was convinced was the gearbox. It was a big stone in the rear tyre tread.

One was the TRAMS PROGRAMME that I was convinced was the gearbox. It was a battery that was too small.

But I gave a mate a lift over to Shropshire in it - to drop a silver E28 off to none other than THE DOCTOR who came here to defend his amazingly detailed E28 5 Series and was literally hounded off.  :-(

Got 30 mpg overall, tank brim to tank brim, light throttle, making progress but rarely over 2500 rpm.

My XJR was the cheapest to run luxobarge I've owned.

Yep, it was either the 7 series register, or the 5 series forum.

Where have all those cheap e28's, e32's and e34's gone?

If I remember correctly, it was somewhere round the Nottingham area?

On a Saturday morning?

Mrs Tet had just had a fairly major operation and was feeling a bit down in the dumps, so I bought that for her to cheer her up.

The bloody thing drove so well, really surprised me. Came home along the A14 and down the M11. Got caught in traffic about Cambridge/Duxford area, and thought 'here we go', but the temp needle never moved off the middle. Got home ok.

Far from being pleased, Mrs Tet said she didn't like it, it was too heavy!!!!

I was bloody infuriated. Sat there and put it on Gumtree for what I paid you for it - can't remember how much - piffling amount.

It was gone the same night, bought by two very shady looking blokes from Basildon who weren't worried about the lack of V5, tax, or owt else.

Possibly the shortest lived car I've had. It was a nice one though.

Often wondered what happened to it. I was sure they were going to do something dodgy with it.

What name was you known by back then? Stirred up some memories this has.

Posted

Glad to see she got whored aboot:)

tbh 2 dodgy looking blokes was what was in it when she was up here..

I remember the RAC driver being awffy suspicious that Andy had *magically* fucked off back home when *his car windscreen got smashed.

the 3.0 m60 is nowhere near as much fun as the 3.5 m30, but the 4.0 was none too shabby.

gotta love a cheap barge!

Having said what I said about the top of the range... don't discount lower models such as a Caprice, or Ford Crown Victoria.  Although they are the "standard" family models of base family/fleet oriented ranges, they can come extremely well-equipped and plush, compared to even top-line European models.  All you have to do is choose carefully.  An ex-LAPD Caprice will be very basic inside; a privately-ordered one could very easily be specced-up to almost Cadillac levels of luxury.

MPG?  If that's really a consideration, you can't afford a luxobarge.  What you need is a diesel Audi.

If you really want a luxobarge though, and can spare 6k (which doesn't buy you very much from Germany...):

A bit out of left field, but how about the Nissan Murano.

Decent sized engine, dead cow interior, lots of toys, smooth, quiet, 100% reliable and drinks like George Best at a family wedding.

You know, it's a shame that there isn't more Oz shite over here.

Similarly plush inside as the septic chod, with similarly bulletproof big bloody V8s pushing pushrods up and down, but altogether in a more manageably sized package,

with the steering wheel where it belongs.

Said steering wheel often even comes in shitroenesque one spoke flavour and pokes out of a dashboard lifted straight from the Dark Star.

Or how about something that looks like a Daewoo Espero that came too close to Fuck-U-Shima?

The older of the two Holdens there is damned handsome but even the newer isn't a bad looking thing.

For reliability it's hard to beat a Honda Legend or Lexus LS400 so either would be ideal.

Which is why you should buy a Renault 25 or something instead.
