Haven't had a Mick's Monster Burger in years, they were always worth the journey up the hill. Spent many an evening up there in my first car, whilst all my friends were doing laps of the car park, I was sat in the back on my Nissan Sunny reading the Haynes manual with a tab and a brew with Foo Fighters playing on the stereo, happy days!

Nice to meet some new people, hope you liked what the south of England has to offer! Sorry I wasn't able to make the afternoon do, but looked like you had good weather for it!

Auction was good too, I think my highlight was the unloved, no-bids-at-fifty-quid Zafira which stalled then refused to restart and had to be pushed, unceremoniously, out of the hall of shattered dreams.

£80 astra was a bit of a bargain too - I reckon that must be a cheap way to smoke about for 6 months then junk it and buy another.

A good couple of hours spent shaking our heads at tat.....Reckon we nearly outnumbered the Southampton East European car buying cartel tonight.    A fact not lost on the auctioneer who knew he was going to struggle.   Hopefully that half a caravan will go through one night in which case I might have a punt, till then I'm keeping my hands in my pockets.   Good to meet FPB7 and Eddy for the first time, hope you have a good run back up country.....

Fpb is a total hero, coming all this way on impulse!  Not only that, he's staying over and having a day out on the IOW tomorrow.

Dan is a total hero, dragging his lovely Mercury out for me to slaver over.

Everyone else, well it was great to be able to put faces to names, I'm so glad to have met you all.  I had a great away-from-baby day, thank you all.

I'm on the laptop so can't post up photos until I get home, but I did manage a few. ;)

Pointing and laughing at the auction took me back!  Oh boy what a pleasant way to pass a couple of hours.  There were two or three I might have bought too if I'd been in the market.  Oh and had the money of course.

Glad you had a good time Eddy, both at the little meet up and the auction.

I hope the Mercury stood up to your expectations, and you enjoyed your drive of it!

I'll eagerly await your pics when you get back home. Enjoy your remaining time down here and have a good trip home.

Some words, pictures and prices:

It was of course a complete non-surprise that our visitors from ooop North were thoroughly decent chaps.

Unfortunately I didn't catch the very beginning, and I think due to the M27 being an arse, no one else did either, so the Corolla with an inch wide panel gap didn't get clocked.

I think this £80 Astra was my highlight especially in re-sale silver. It was complete no reserve, winner takes all, and even then the bidding was dying on it's feet at £70. Reckon Cavcraft would have been all over this!

Rattly 206CC was similarly no reserved. Inexplicably to Grumpy Geoff on the stand it went for more than it did 2 weeks ago when apparently no one could be arsed. £150 was the winning amount

2 early mk 2 Clios went through for an identical £220 in consecutive lots. A slightly later one went for an extra £50 on that. More on them in a tick.

A '52 plate Laguna Estate got FPB7 twitching when the hammer went down at £100 offered. Another one, which I'd noticed didn't fancy keeping its front pass window up in the car park went earlier on at £110 offered.

Oddly an '03 plain red Ka DIDN'T sell at £290. Sills looked ok, but I had a look later and it was going round the fuel filler. Someone's smoking if they think they can get more! A much more frilly and patched silver one DID go for £80 though.

I quite liked the black Leon that hit £210, but then I've always had a soft spot for them!

As well as the Zafira which disgraced itself fantastically, there was also this '09 Nissan Qashqow which I know is a bit new for our tastes, bit it sounded and smelt like it was down 2, and was pumping out enough smoke to make James Bond feel proud! Utterly fucked it was!

And finally, I did manage to get most of the Renault Row of Woe into the same picture...

Safe travels to the out of towners!

Oh it absolutely did, Dan, and I did, very much!  I'm so glad I made this visit, for so many reasons.  We may have to try to fit in another one!

Any time Eddy!

I have relatives in Doncaster I've not seen for a while so maybe I'll be up your end of the country before too long.

Now thinking that if  I get out of Warwick at 4pm, I can be in Southampton by 6pm.

Could be up for a midweek dash to The South at sometime.

Oh yes, almost forgot. The next day, I saw these waiting for punters.

Closer look?

^^^ 438k on that Audi at the last MoT! That's especially impressive given most of the miles must have been notched up running around the IOW, and it looks so smart as well. Must be the oldest taxi left in the UK, there's a D reg Volvo 240 in Wiltshire but this is a couple of years older.

Bloody good pics FPB! I didn't even see you take most of them. Eddy looks like he's in his element at the wheel!

That Audi taxi is unbelievable. Can not believe it's B reg and still taking fares. Looks in fantastic condition though.

Yup, still going strong!

Anyway, to get a photo of the Audi, I used this:

To drive to Portsmouth to catch this:

To Ryde, so I could ride on this:

whose inside looked like this:

To get here:

Then walked outside of the station and was met by these:

After a quick walk around and after looking at this:

I was cold and fed up. So I caught this:

back to Ryde, so I could catch the next one of these:

back to the mainland. After a rather choppy crossing, I got back into this:

and drove home back here:

All in all, about 350 ish miles for a burger and a chat with added hovercraft and obsolete tube train bonus. The Citroen is at its comfortable best at this sort of thing and for a car approaching 33 years old, a fag packet fuel consumption figure of around 37 and a bit makes it a pretty cheap couple of days. Well, that's not strictly true as I booked Premier Inn on spec and was bum raped for the privilege.

Good people met. Good food eaten and good bollocks talked about.

WILL DO AGAIN.

Excellent. The old tube stock in use on the island is well worth seeing, if your into such things! There used to be a pair of class 03's and an 05 shunters over there at one bit too. There's also a preserved railway on the island but I'd imagine it's not open this time of year. I wouldn't mind going over in summer for a look. It's been years since I've been over there.

Did any of you get a pic of the old Ford van that turned up?

Posted

I did, I just haven't uploaded yet.  I will...

We took that taxi at one stage on our honeymoon. It's an Alan and it'll probably outlast the driver (and all credit to him for keeping it mint AND the local authority not having a wanky age limit)

As we were saying, about the random Ford van.....

1928 Ford Model A.  George and Sue had taken it out for a little run, but it had overheated so they stopped to let it cool down.  Right beside a bunch of car nuts! :)

It's a lovely old thing isn't it. I'll keep an eye out for it now.

When they first pulled up I did notice a little drip coming out of the radiator.

And they stole my thunder of having the oldest car in the car park, by quite some margin too!
