Overland shite

I'm lucky enough that my job allows me to visit many parts of the world. This seems to satisfy my wanderlust to a certain extent, but I've never stopped thinking about jumping in my 2cv and driving somewhere far away. I think this was caused by growing up with posters like this on my walls:

I've started collecting some photos, and thought I would share here - Please add any of your own!

Edit: arse, can't seem to get the direct link out of Flickr. Gimme a sec.

That Suzuki Supercarry in the eBay thread a few weeks ago!

Edit - I can't find the Supercarry picture yet, so have a Peugeot: this was in Brightwells' auction in November, just driven there from Australia.post-17481-0-34431500-1452973064_thumb.jpg

Ha! Auto$hiters would consider an epic 'overland' as travelling out of sight of the front door/3 pointer/&return back WITHOUT a F.T.P. ;)

I had a German pal in Ghana whose full time job for many years was to buy 2CVs and drive them across the Sahara and sell them one at a time in Mali/Niger/Burkina. Then go back and get another one. No pics though. Even if he had a camera then he would have lost the photos by now.

This was one of my 'longer distance' 2CV efforts, way back.

Go for it, while you can . . .

Hey, there's an idea for these overland banger rallies. A-frame some spare chod behind you. Then if Banger A fails-to-proceed you can swap them over or just leave it there in the desert and continue in Banger B.

Africar: loved the TV series, would love one of the cars. Responsible for many a daydream of the long and empty road.

There's an Africar in the Lakeland Motor Museum...

Also, allow me to recommend a book at this point: "Appointment In Zambia" by Sara Dunn.  The true story of a young couple who drove across Africa to his new job in 1970, in their brand new Hillman Hunter.  Sara was half of the couple, and is a friend of mine from Cyprus.
