Jimmycrackcorn Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 I seem to have a thing for gearboxes at the moment, there seems to be a lot of good sensible knowledge here so whilst what I might have planned may be frowned upon I'm hoping someone can help gearbox wise.I have a supercharged 2 litre EFi Pinto (205 block) waiting for me to do something with, I did have a type 9 box but when I was skint I sold it. It actually turned out to be goosed so I refunded the lad.So I don't have a gearbox for it and I want a replacement and Type 9s seem very expensive now.Are there any other alternatives? I know you can use the MT75 unit with an adapter which when I swap out the Pug 2.5td on my van I can use the MT75 mated to it as it'll be replaced for a Merc diesel. It'll all end up in a Reliant Robin eventually but I want to keep an eye out for a suitable box.
ShiteRider Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Mazda box? Rx8 boxes fit with an adaptor. Downsides being the gearing is too low on first on a regular engine and if your knocking out masses of torque it might struggle.
Jimmycrackcorn Posted January 13, 2016 Author Posted January 13, 2016 Wow they're cheap but looks like length could be an issue as it looks a good bit longer than the type 9. But then I could move everything back and it might help balance it out better. So the box is around £150 and the conversion kit about the same.Would the RX8 not be putting out more torque than a Pinto?
garbaldy Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Rx8 and torque don't belong in the same sentence. The Mazda box has been used in mk2 escorts and I know of a bloke who won't use them again after blowing two.
Jimmycrackcorn Posted January 13, 2016 Author Posted January 13, 2016 Yeah googling them they all mention the same thing. I think I'll run the MT75, apparently it can be done without the adapter and using a spacer for the clutch release bearing.
jonny69 Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Mustang and TVR boxes should bolt up *I think* but you won't be saving any money that way. Pretty sure they're the same or similar to the MT75 with different gears, but it's been way too long since I looked into it so don't rely on any of that...
Jimmycrackcorn Posted January 13, 2016 Author Posted January 13, 2016 I think the only issue with the MT75 might be that the ratio is a little short and Ideally I want to have a bit of fun and get a decent 1/4 mile time with it.
sierraman Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Would a Borg Warner t5 fit? That said one of those would be expensive

Maybe easier to get a mt75 in there and change the diff ratio to suit the box/powerband.

cort1977 Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 T5 will fit and should be a straight bolt in but that is the sierra cosworth set up so not cheap. Given all that don't discount the MX-5 boxes, unlike the Ford ones there are plenty available. I think that kit cars and Morgan have moved to using them with a longitudinal duratec so they must be reasonably strong. coalnotdole Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 I have a supercharged 2 litre EFi Pinto (205 block) Sounds interesting, It'll all end up in a Reliant Robin eventually but I want to keep an eye out for a suitable box. Sounds mental, I want to have a bit of fun and get a decent 1/4 mile time with it. Sounds lethal! spike60 1

Jimmycrackcorn Posted January 13, 2016 Author Posted January 13, 2016 Sounds interesting, Sounds mental, Sounds lethal! Probably but it's only being done for shiggles, it'll be fully caged etc but I want to make the exterior look as original as possible which I think I can manage. Axle wise I'm not sure I might just see how the Reliant one does and then when it eventually explodes I'll probably change it out for a shortened Ford or perhaps Volvo.I was going to try and use a Trabant but I can't believe how expensive they are.
Jimmycrackcorn Posted January 13, 2016 Author Posted January 13, 2016 I think I'll see how my MT75 works out but in the meantime stash some monies away and keep an eye out for a Type 9.
Lacquer Peel Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Are RWD Volvo gearboxes viable? There's one on here for £100, with a free car included.
primeradoner Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Ive got a few type 9 boxes at my yard and also a couple of 4 speeds. Im only at Durham so local to you. If you still have the knackered type 9 I have a contact who gives £50 for them. Let me know if any good. Jimmycrackcorn and Stanky 2

Prices are pretty much dictated by what banger/ stock car lads pay. Normal type 9s are £150, Type 9 with long second gear (out of P100) are £250. 2 litre 4 speeds are £100 and 1.6 4 speeds are £50. All are complete with gearstick and clutch fork.
tooSavvy Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 .... so a 'crock/rusted to the drive' FoMoCo is not worth owt* "scraps on its arse m8, I'll drop by tomozz @ £50" is a big earner, then? *Sierra D. TS

TSGearbox will be worth a bit. Depends if its a 1.8td or a 2.3. If its a 2.3 check the vin plate for rear axle code If its code m its a 3.14 diff which is worth £££££££££s to the kit car boys
